The Detroit Lions will have to take the field each of the next two weeks without wide receiver Jameson Williams.

News surfaced Monday that Williams was facing a two-game suspension for violating the league's performing-enhancing substance policy, meaning he will miss this week's game against Tennessee and next week's divisional showdown at Lambeau Field against Green Bay.

So frustrating. Is the timing definite? I was looking at their upcoming schedule and hoping he could string out the appeals until the two-week stretch where they play Jax-Indy. Will suck not to have him for the game at Lambeau

Whatever

More snaps for Patrick & Raymond

Isaiah Williams might even see a target

Tom Kennedy & Allen Robinson II still in the building

come on let’s go, ain’t no time mope, got things to do & places to see

like NOLA in February

Goff said players get hurt every week. Just treat this like a 2 week injury absence.

The frustrating thing is players are educated on this, and given full lists of what is and what is not permitted.

Not sure what is was but rumor is was a banned energy substance. If it were PEDs it would be 5-6 games.

This is total hearsay, but my cousin said his trainer at the gym was in Lions camp this year, and his guess was exactly that: a supplement that contained a banned substance. Makes me feel a little better about Jamo not being a cheater, but still, as an NFL player you need to know exactly what you're putting in your body

I would assume they'll start using LaPorta more, unless he's really hobbled

Dan Campbell does not need to be doing fake punts from his 34 yard line This team can win without high risk low reward gambles.

When playoff time comes and when the Lions play the best teams taking high risk gambles will cost them a game at some point.

I agree the fake punt was a bit iffy.

But I can live with it. I love the way this team plays. I don’t want them changing.

As far as the Jamo thing goes, is there a 3 strike policy in the NFL? Because this is his 2nd suspension and I'm pretty sure nobody else on the 53 man roster even has one.

You know how hard it is on defenses to get one of the few stops of the game only to have them convert a 4th down play? Campbell wants to demoralize these teams. He is creating this impression that it is impossible to stop this offense. Campbell is building a team which is not going to lose by playing it safe. He wants to put the boot on the opponents neck and keep it there.

In what universe has the top players in the league wanted to get traded to Detroit. Somehow that is this universe now.

Cleveland will trade Smith and Garrett for 1st, two 2nd, a 5th and a Hooker.

Does Brad pull the trigger?

Crosby is still being pursued, but is not seen as a perfect fit due to his size.

Going forward it will be tough for the fake punts to work. Every special teams coach has to prepare for this against the Lions now.

Look at the trades as of late. Only trades that are getting a high return is to trade up for a "franchise" QB type.

Do a #1 and Hooker for Garrett. Garrett will take the place of the 1 and with Goff locked up there is no need for Hooker. Only issue is now Detroit's 1 will not be in the top 25.

Think he’s 100%, or at a minimum the healthiest he has been this year.

Would be great if his route partition utilization spiked up. They’ve been throwing fewer passes this year and he is running about 5 less routes per game.

His targets have nose dived.

Over 20 games last year, Goff dropped back 761 times and had 716 PA. That works out to 38.1 and 35.8.

Through 6 games, those numbers are 32.5 and 29.0

(quick sidebar: 2.17 sacks v 1.85 last year, 1.25 scrambles v 0.40 2023 - OL has been mediocre in pass pro. Still best in class at run blocking.)

plays run per game: 69.1 | 65.5

LaPorta per game: 2023 20g | 2024 6g
  • snaps: 83.4 | 78.4%
  • passing snaps: 90.5% | 88.7%
  • routes run: 30.1 | 25.2
  • route participation: 87.2% | 87.3%
  • targets: 7.2 | 2.5
  • ADoT: 7.2 | 7.1
  • receptions: 5.4 | 2.3
  • yards: 53.3 | 37.3
  • YPR: 9.95 | 16.0
  • YPRR: 1.77 | 1.48
  • YAC: 22.5 | 22.2
  • YAC/REC: 4.2 | 9.5
  • TD: 0.55 | 0.17
Every special teams coach has to prepare for this against the Lions now

Exactly. Which means the other team being less set up for a big return.

Dan said on the ticket this morning they had the look they needed. Sometimes it will be on and if they don't have the look and kill it. Said the fact someone finally stopped one wouldn't preclude them from doing it going forward.

I believe when we pass on fake punts Jack Fox is 4/5 with 4 first downs (& the one that failed he hit CJ Moore right in the numbers but it was dropped. Rushing fakes are something 6 out 8 or 7 out of 9.

I need to go through the game logs sometime and see how often we have pulled off the landing zone touchback (lands in front of the GL and skips through or the KR doesn't return it. That one gets placed on the 20 and seems like we're good for one a game. They seem to mix it up otherwise, prefer to kick it deep in 4 minute situations but try to hit it high and come down inside the 5 if they want the KR to have to make a decision to return it or FC it.

Fipp is the best Special Team Coordinator in the league IMO. Never miss his Thursday presser, he often has a good story to tell.

Frank Ragnow among centers in Week 7:
  • 90.1 PFF grade (1st)
  • 88.1 run-blocking grade (1st)
  • 85.1 pass-blocking grade (1st)
  • 29 pass-blocking snaps
  • 0 pressures allowed

Why do all these fictional trades include a backup QB with almost zero NFL experience? Is there some link to teams actually showing interest in HH?

I don't play the fictional games.. That is supposedly on the table.
"Supposedly" = fictional until proven otherwise. Think of all the stuff floated out there every year and how few of those ever actually happen.
There are tons of hypothetical crap that some writer in New York think is a good idea which is worthless. Then there are people inside the organizations which are actual negotiations and are being considered. Much different.

I’ll try to post all the individual grades but a few that stick out:
  • Hutch, still leading the league in pressures and sacks despite playing 2 less games, is the highest graded player in the NFL
  • BB - #1 S, highest graded DB (any position), #1 coverage grade in the NFL - starting to see some talk about DPotY. His production has been Ed
    Reed
    -esque.
  • Kerby - 6th amongst S; we have probably the best tandem in the league
  • Jack
    Campbell
    LB 10
  • Alex Anzalone LB 14
  • Alim McNeill DI 6 (Reader is DI 30 after a bad game in MIN)
  • Out of 150 Linebackers with no minimum qualifying snaps, Nowaske is 13th out of 150 - he's been great in limited duty since Barnes went down.
Have not looked at offensive players yet but did glance at Goff, he’s QB19. Once again he has a poor ratio in PFF’s subjective BTT (big time throws) : TWP (turnover worthy and lay.) Last game Goff had 1 BTT. Really?

Because without re-watching I can think of 3:
  • the long TD to ARSB was a fire
  • the deep crosser to Patrick
  • medium crosser to St Brown to setup the game winning FG
They gave him 2 TWP - none of his passes, but he did fumble twice, both recovered.

at ARI BTT-0 TWP-1
SEA BTT- 2 TWP-0
at DAL BTT-1 TWP-0
at MIN BTT-1 TWP-2

Just thought of a 4th BTT…Sam Monson breaks it down.

Goff is averaging 11.6 YPA this season when pressured. Not when blitzed, he's always had that club in his bag, but pressure (whether the other team called a blitz or not, they got home.) The next highest QB is at 9.0. Versus MIN Goff was 11/13 156 1TD 0 INT 12.0 YPA 143.2 passer rating. Passer rating generally drops by 30 to 35 points when QB is pressured. That is a freaking cheat code because when he can do that, the defense has no answers.

Separation / Lockdown Reports - new features on PFF this fall.

LaPorta is near the bottom in separation grade. ARSB & Jamo are not as high as I thought they might be.

Arnold hasn’t been that sticky (on the Lockdown Report he's in phase 41.2% of the time) but as a physical press corner, mirroring will never be his strength.

Thought Arnold held his own v JJ; two of his best coverages were wiped out by penalty. Had a coverage grade over 70 for the first time this year v the best WR in the game. Kid is legit.

OTOH, that
A Jones TD was 100% on Terrion. My brother, you cannot let motion take you inside when you have outside contain. But he’s growing each week, he won’t make that mistake again.

On the season long Lockdown Report (simple % of time allowing receivers to come open), all positions, BB is 9th, CDIII is 12th, Anzalone is 15th best.

Best Lions defense of my lifetime. Admittedly, not a lot of competition....1970 for sure, 2014, maybe one of Fontes 8 seasons. I love how aggressive they are, all the time. It's like they're not saying to the other team "Let's get this over quick. You don't have to put together 12, 14 play dink n dunks....our guys are out here playing press man, we think our DL can win their one-on-ones with your OL, you better hope you accounted for BB or Kerby because they'll pick it off if you don't. There's a chance you might go 70 in 5 plays. We don't really care because we''re gonna play aggressive on offense and hit you with explosives and trick plays, though probably not until after our guys maul your guys run after run after run. Good luck with all that. P.S. We're gonna be aggressive on ST, too."

Pretty sure Holmes will be picking up two 3rd round compensatory picks next year after AG gets his own gig.

I just don't think trading Hooker mid season makes much sense for either side, that's why I questioned that part in particular.

This is part of the reasons the Lions are hedging, they are not ready to give up Hooker. But it sounds like Brad is making serious inquiries and is planning on making some move for a starting Edge who can provide real pressures.

When you have a SB contender with a Hutch-shaped hole on the roster, you have to be willing to go all-in. If Hooker is what it takes to get a deal done, Lions should absolutely pull the trigger

I never said not to trade him, I just don't know what is the grand appeal of a 26 year old who has never started a game and had a total of 19 career yards.

Well I kept reading when Lions drafted Hooker that he was going to be a first rd pick before his knee injury. Might have value to a QB starved team.

But he is older than Herbert, Stroud, and other starters and unproven. At this point he will be stuck behind Goff for at least a few years. Love sat for 3 years but he was only 21 when drafted.

According to the chatter, it sounds like Jamo was taking Adderal for a mental health issue prescribed by a doctor. But this creates a quagmire for the NFL as they have been promoting protecting players health and mental health, but yet this is on the list of banned substances. The NFL is upset because a leak of a possible suspension came out before they actually ruled there would be one. As of now the NFL has not announced anything and it seems there are discussions between the players association and the NFL on this subject.

For what it’s worth, Lombardi on the GM Shuffle podcast said that the Lions are the best team in the entire NFL in his opinion. Mainly cited ability to run on anyone and the togetherness and mental toughness of the whole squad.

Has also kept mentioning a NE DE that he thinks would be a good Hutch fill in and not cost a lot. Can’t be bothered googling his name it’s Ochi or something along those lines.

Yeah it's an off label treatment that some professionals have been using to treat depression (e.g., that was not the intended use when it was developed for ADHD and narcolepsy but clinical trials showed it to be effective.)

I'd say Jamo has a shot at winning this one. A very long shot, but let's hope for the best.

Love the full support MCDC showed today. Basically said, "Hey, that's my guy, I've had enough interaction with him to know if he tells me something, then that's what it is." They can't talk specifics right now but sounds like the team is standing with Jamo, and at the same time cognizant ignorance is not an excuse - they're well suited to get through two games without him.

That would not have been the case Week 1. So glad we got Tim Patrick. And while he's not productive in game yet, Allen Robinson II has been putting in work helping with installs and running scout team. He's basically getting all the crap work nobody wants or gets foisted on to interns but he's all in to help out in any way. Jamo mentioned a few weeks back that ARob has been a mentor and he really appreciates what he is passing on to him. Guy used to be a stud, now he's washed, but accepts where he is at rn and embraces it.

According to PFF the last two weeks, Brian Branch is the highest rated player in the NFL. He is likr tops in coverage, 3rd in pass rusing and 4th in run stoppage.

Actually that's his ranks positionally for the entire season.

He is in definitely in the conversation for DPoty.

The production rivals prime Ed Reed.

Please correct me if I am wrong but I believe I read the other day on the nflpa website that you can have a prescription for it and be allowed to take it. Now I guess if it wasn’t for ADHD, the nfl can go after him?

Begrudgingly. And people still wandered in crying about his season long numbers like Weeks 1-2 are somehow meaningful in Week 8. "He should have had 3 turnovers in the Vikings game." People just making stuff up desperately trying to discredit him.

incoming rant

PFF graded him as having two (2) turnover worthy plays (TWP).
  • One was a fumble that he regained control of in a few tenths of a second (ball came out and he literally had two hands on it as he was going to the ground.)
  • The other was a Will Levis decision to arm going forward fumble it to where a gaggle of 3 Detroit OL were gathered (2 had just turnstyled their man, the 3rd was Frank asking WTH man.) Neither fumble was ever in danger of being recovered.
  • None were related to a thrown ball leaving the pocket with the intention of being completed.
  • Three incompletions; two were tipped/batted balls, and neither were turnover worthy.
  1. first incompletion 7:52 3rd Q
    - was 15 of 15 up to then. tipped pass intended for LaPorta; ball was redirected upward and was still directly online with the target. not a TWP.
  2. second incompletion 6:04 4thQ
    - was 20 of 21 up to then. short pass over the middle to Monty, touch low but hit him in the hands. Van Ginkel tipped it on the way out which is why it was basically uncatchable. not a TWP.
  3. third incompletion 5:14 4th Q
    - next pass attempt was a sail route up the left side to Raymond which was caught OOB. caused by Van Ginkel moving him off his spot. only bad throw of the game out of 25 ATT. not a TWP.
  4. fumble #1 11:52 4th Q
    - blitz, Greenard 2-hand swipes the turnstyle and drills Goff, arms over the top tip the ball out, Goff gets lucky because ball (which ain't round) bounces off the turg directly into his stomach. Was never close to being recovered, but that is some incredible horseshoe luck, def a deserved 1st TWP.
  5. fumble #2 5:07 4th Q
-4-man rush, 2 DL get through, JG spins away from Greenard and Van Ginkel on a stunt twist hits him as he is trying to get it to Gibbs in the flat. ball flies directly to where the Ragnow & the 2 OL who got beat are standing, the Pro Ball C falls on it. Though it was never at risk of being recovered, that's a Will Levis kind of error, def a twp, def lucky, officially the 2nd TWP.
That's it.

People must think one of the 3 contested catches to Amon-Ra St Brown was too risky and those were TWP. PFF did not grade them as such. If people think Goff throwing to ARSB in a tight window is too risky, maybe they should be watching curling.

Oh, but he's setup for success, they have the best offensive line in the league. They are road graders, but in pass protection this year they are ranked 14th.

Frank Ragnow had the best game of the week at C, Glasgow at RG was good, and Penei was his usual self (1 sack in his last 1289 snaps). 3 pressures between those stalwarts.

LT Decker (6 pressures) and RG Kayode Awosika (backup in for Zeitler, 4 pressures) were hot garbage. The RBs were assigned blitz pickup 5x and gave up 3 pressures.
LaPorta (4), Wright (2), and Patrick (the TD to St Brown) were a perfect 7/7 when Ragnow asked them to cover the blitz.

Vikings blitzed on 17 of 29 (58.6) drop backs per PFF which resulted in 1 (one) sack. Highest blitz rate any QB has faced this year.

15/16 165 TD 130.5
(not a surprise, Goff has always been a blitz beater - he knows where the hot read is, that's why his time to throw was 2.31. That's his bread n butter, getting the ball out on time & on target.)

Goff was under pressure 16 times (55.1%). Highest of any QB in the NFL this season. 4 sacks.

11/13 156 TD 142.3
(This is the part that is new; Jared Goff has always wilted under pressure. This year he's like "oh, you're swiping across my arm, no worries, lemme just shuffle up & rip a bullet.")

When pressured this season - not blitzed, but actual felt pressure - Jared Goff currently leads all qualified quarterbacks in:
  • yards per attempt (11.6) - next highest is 9.0
  • completion percentage (71.6%)
  • CPOE (+9.6%)
  • passer rating (125.7)

Time for a bagel run & then gonna hop on the bus to go sit with the folks in the chemo ward. :confetti:

If Williams needed Adderall for mental health issues they have a legitimate case not to be suspended.

I read in the past players were taking it for the physical and mental boost it gives.

If you have ever taken it."I did once" just to see what it was like and my energy and stamina levels are off the charts. So I do understand why the NFL would not want players taking it. It is like speed but you are very aware of the energy boost.

Josh Reynolds had a bad day last week. Shot twice, left arm and in the back of the head in a L.A. strip club.

Reynolds, who, according to court documents, was shot twice, once in his left arm and once in the back of his head. Another man was shot in his back. A third victim was wounded by shattered glass, the court documents say. All three had scrapes from climbing over a fence, the documents say.

Guessing he won’t be coming off IR anytime soon.
