I'm also afraid it's going to cost the team down the road.

Plus if he help win a superbowl this year or next then I really don't care. No one cares about the Seahawks trading a high pick and paying Percy Harvin when he was scoring a touchdown in the Super Bowl win.
I do like the Lions seem to be the opposite of last year. They dominated for 10ish weeks last year and were pretty healthy other than Hutch. This year they have been banged up and have looked good, but not dominate and should get guys back.

It probably is because Decker is going to be dealing with this all year, but offensive lineman, especially tackles are very expensive to trade for. Plus rotating guys in and keeping Alim and Hutch fresh is invaluable. The Lions are only a third of the way through the season right now if they make a deep run.
And at the same time, I woild love to see them add to both lines.

Lions D dealt with injuries all year. It was only in the back half of the season that they really started to pile up (McNeill, Davis, Anzalone)

Heard on The Ticket yesterday that in the last 24 years of the trading deadline only 7 offensive linemen have been moved. Reason being teams don`t get rid of any useful OL due to injuries and the fact is that o-lineman are not plug in and play. They need time to know the blocking system, working with others on the line. Know the plays.
Pass rushers just line up and rush the passer, or set the edge. Much easier to start right away.

Typed my response too fast. Meant to say that they had plenty of defensive injuries early in the season beside Hutch (Davenport, Rakestraw, Iffy, Barnes, Rodriguez, Cominsky, Dorsey) and then things got significantly worse in the second half with more frontline starters like Davis, McNeill, etc.
I guess you could say that this year has been worse because so many of the injuries have been concentrated in the secondary, including all five Week 1 DBs vs Tampa. But last year's early-season carnage was hardly limited to Hutch.
Also -- knock on any piece of wood in a five-mile radius -- they have not yet lost any starters to season-enders. Hopefully they head into the home stretch with all the current injured guys healthy (well, except Davenport, whom I'm completely given up hope will ever be healthy).

They played bad. Offense, defense, special teams. Bad play calling, bad game plan, very undisciplined. The defense was better after the first 2 TDs but were bad against the run and made too many mistakes. Special teams were as bad as I've seen since Campbell got here. The offensive line was really bad. Could not pass protect, could not run the ball. There were way too many penalties.
The Lions looked unprepared and it really sucks because the Packers lost at home to Carolina.

All true, the pack losing is about the only bright spot on an otherwise crappy day.
Dan Campbell blamed himself for the loss and for the Lions not being prepared to play.
Campbell said Mahogany will be out awhile.
EDIT TO ADD: Reportedly a knee injury, possibly out until late in the season or possible season ending. Heard it on the postgame show.

Nope, looked like a broken leg. Decker is all banged up too. Glasgow was a revolving door today. Gibbs got destroyed in pass protection. Not a good day.
Have to admit looks like the Lions are missing Ben Johnson calling the plays. The offense looks stale.
I think the offensive line is more of an issue but I haven't liked the play calling either.

Agree with all of you, but I gotta say, they played like dog crap all day and yet were still in position to put together a game-tying/winning drive with a minute and a half left, right up until that third-down conversion to Nailor.
I do worry about the lack of discipline, and even more the injuries, but this loss wasn't nearly as disconcerting as Green Bay in Week 1

What worries me is that, under BJ, Goff absolutely owned Flores. It was like he was on a years-long revenge tour for Super Bowl LIII. Today, it felt like Flores had regained the upper hand
Not to take anything away from Ben Johnson, but the offensive line he had was far better than this year's line.

A big part of that is the the Vikings being an average team. If the Lions do this against Philly, Rams etc they won't even have a chance late in the game.

I mentioned in the team thread before the game a factor that could derail them vs Vikings (a team they usually beat) was a possible look ahead to Washington (the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year). Usually does not happen to a DC team but who knows.

Also this is part of being the hunted. Teams aren't surprised by the Lions anymore and the Vikings still have a lot of guys on the team from last year when the Lions swept them and took the division from them.

In the NFL it is Any Given Sunday. Teams game plan all week for the team they are playing that week, not the team they play in 2 weeks. GB just lost to Carolina at home.
Lions just did not play well. Kickoff returns like I have not seen at all in any game this season, Monty's fumble in own end, defense had to defend short fields, a couple roughing the passer penalties. O-line struggled badly, first time I remember Gibbs being basically a non-factor.
Really need to win the Washington game now.

This is the single biggest problem by far. Yes, you can scheme your way out of some of it, but even great play callers are limited when the line can't pass protect or run the ball.
That being said, the Lions never adjusted. The play calling was bad and too predictable. They need to spread the field more. They not only have too many two-TE sets and jumbo packages but they are trying to run Gibbs up the middle when the defense is in tight. The WRs are in tight too much. Spread the field more and give Gibbs more room (and Montgomery as well). Run Gibbs outside more. They never got in a rhythm and the penalties were a killer.
Bottom line to me is, regardless of the play calling, if the line doesn't play better, the Lions will not go far. Holmes has to make a move for a guard and I believe he will.

It's amazing how Rosemann keeps managing to swing these trades. They don't all work, but he has a pretty good batting average, plus it never seems like the Eagles are scrapping because of all the picks they traded away
Phillips is a solid addition. Good pass rusher, not very good in run defense. The price was good.
There's a lot of talk about a couple of older guards that are both playing at a high level: Kevin Zeitler and Joe Bitonio. I don't know who else is available but if be overjoyed if we got either of those guys. Zeitler had been a right guard and Ratledge played right guard in college so they'd have to do some manuevering. Bitonio is a left guard. Zeitler is 35 and Bitonio is 34 so the cost should be relatively low.
Whether it's one of those two or someone else, they absolutely have to pick up a guard.

Um, didn't Zeitler leave Detroit because they didn't want to pay him what he could get on the open market? So then they turn around nine months later and agree to pay that contract plus give up draft capital? Can't see Holmes going for that.
ETA: I see now that he only signed a one-year deal with Tennessee, so I suppose they would only have to pay a portion of the $9M. Maybe it is manageable. Still feels kinda weird, though

They had 3 third round picks (now 2). It's not really a big deal if you're willing to kick the draft picks down the road. They gave up their own 3rd which is probably going to be in the back half and they could get a comp pick back for him. Maybe it's a 3rd, maybe a 4th, who knows. Most of the time he's trading 5th through 7th for these in-season trades. He loads up on them every year.

Lions have dealt 6 of those type of picks to trade up for Broderic Martin, and Teslaa. Martin is gone and Teslaa has been a non factor so far. Not sure how many Lions have left to deal.

The Lions need to put someone with speed to return kicks. I don't care who but seeing Saylors (and before him Reynolds and Stuard) run into a pile on almost every kickoff return frustrates the **** out of me. Put Raymond back there. Hell, put Jamo back there. Do something.
There was one bright spot yesterday and that was Terrion Arnold. He had a pick and 3 passes defended. His coverage was solid. The game before he got hurt he did a good job on JaMarr Chase. Hopefully he keeps playing well because if he does, this secondary will be really good when we get D.J. Reed and Kerby Joseph back.

I'm not expecting too much for the trade deadline. Probably something to acknowledge that Mahogany's gone at least a month and both Sewell and Decker are banged up, but nothing too earth-shattering. For better or worse, it's not likely for the Lions (or any Detroit sports team) to go "all in" on a "big swing".

Want insult to injury? I am 99% sure the 3rd rounder the Eagles used to acquire Phillips yesterday is the 3rd rounder the Lions gave up to get Teslaa.

I would all but guarantee, that Phillips is nothing more than a half season rental. I doubt there is any chance Phillips is on the Eagles in 2026. If the Eagles are lucky, he'll ball out and get a good contract in the offseason where the Eagles can get a comp pick back.
