2025 Philadelphia Eagles - Oh Johnny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling. (26 Viewers)

Eagles trade for Jon Metchie. Details not released yet.

Why?

Why not

Because you just moved down a round in the draft for a guy who if he's lucky will see MAYBE 10-15 targets all year. He's also on the last year of his rookie deal so there isn't even the possibility of a controlled asset when Dotson leaves. Metchie was going to get cut by the Texans, he's not some savior in the slot, and I don't think he's better than Dotson. I don't see what benefit he brings.
Lucky to see 1 target per game? He had 33 last year, I think 33 this year is definitely possible.

Also it is not a full round move down. Expecting our pick to be a very low 5th for a mid round 6th. In the 6th round, that is nothing. Not expecting him to be a world beater but obviously Howie saw some potential in him. Dude just beat cancer and is working his way back, I think it was extremely small risk.

Dez Bryant approved today:
You clearly don’t know football.. Metchie been in unfortunate situations that had nothing to do with his play.. health issues and emerging WRs in Houston..Eagles clearly got a steal…he’s familiar with Hurts and Smith…Eagles really out here playing MUT in real life…

The Texans threw the ball nearly 130 times more than the Eagles did last season. Even with the three guys ahead of him missing multiple games (Diggs missed over half the season), he only saw 37 targets. Unless you're projecting a rash of injuries at the WR position and the Eagles to suddenly go from a run-first team to a pass heavy team, I'll stick with my 10-15 target range.

Also, since when is Dez Bryant an authority on NFL players. He actually said he preferred Quinn Ewers over Tua and said Ewers was "Dan Marino 2.0." Thanks, Dez, you're opinion isn't really needed here.
You got to realize how bad the Hou Oline was too. They totally revamped it this year. Stroud even looked bad last year. Metchie was a dam good player in College. Starter on an SEC Alabama team. He also went through chemo his rookie year. Tough player and made a lot of good plays for Alabama.

It’s a good trade for depth too.

What impact did the Houston OLine have on Metchie? Why didn't it have the same impact on the other receivers?

Also, I don't really care how good the guy was in college. It's totally irrelevant to the discussion of what he brings to the 2025 Eagles.
ability to play the slot in the true sense of a crafty WR3 allowing Devonte to stay outside and already was teammates with Devonte Smith in college. Plays outside as well, fluid route running especially short yardage passes, and good hands. Willing and effective Blocker, really good hands, chain mover was reliable on 3rd downs.

He’s a true technical slot guy, thrives on quick seperation rather than power (AJ) finesse (Devonte) or speed (Dotson). HE gives the Eagles something they lacked — a polished, high-IQ separator who thrives in the slot and underneath game.
I think you’re evaluation of him is a little hyperbolic. I like Metchie as a player, more than Dotson, even, but he’s not a world-beater. Hr’s a good dude and a true pro who has overcome a lot, but not a 40-50 target guy.

Unfortunately, he is in the same position Dotson was in last year- coming in late, camp’s over and the season is about to start. Learning a new Offense and devloping timing with Jalen isn’t going to happen right away. Dotson’s had a really strong camp from all accounts and worked with Jalen in the offseason. And Cooper has shown flashes of being a really solid player. It’s gonna take some time to crack the line-up and steal reps, let alone targets, from those guys.

And let’s face it, with AJ, Devonta and Goedert on the team there aren’t a lot of targets to go around.

With Wilson being hurt, he might be a guy we’re glad to have in December. But I doubt he’ll be anything more than an afterthought in the Offense. And he’s a FA after this year.

I look at this as nothing more than the Parris Campbell, Julio Jones, Zach Pascal-type of veteran depth guy to have on the roster as a "break glass in case of emergency" that Howie likes to have.

Julio jones actually led us in receiving a couple games if i recall

Seems John Metchie is here to be on the roster, reading the tea leaves it doesn't even seem like a question if he will with the way the coaches talked about him + the draft pick "investment" in him and all.

Guessing the WRs end up being AJ/Devonta/Dotson/Cooper/Metchie/A. Smith

If Metchie can get up to speed by mid season the passing game could look pretty dynamic.

Also - Cooper seems to always be making plays and has inside/outside versatility. Very intrigued to see what they do with him, assuming he makes the team ( it sounds like a lock now with Wilson hurt especially).

Julio Jones had 19 targets, 11 catches and 74 receiving yards for the Eagles in 2023. He never had more than 2 receptions in a game and his highest yards in a game were 34.

Won’t practice today:

AJ Brown - hamstring
Tariq Castro-Fields - hamstring
Lewis Cine - groin
Landon Dickerson - knee
Jordan Mailata - concussion
Tanner McKee - finger
Andrew Mukuba - hamstring
Kelee Ringo - quad
DeVonta Smith - groin
Josh Uche - groin
Johnny Wilson - knee/ankle

Am I the only one enamored of Cooper?
I am. He seems to have more buzz than when Hank Baskett made the team. He just keeps making plays. Guess bc he went to a super small school that being the reason he was not drafted
Elijah Cooks emerged early in camp as the "Hank Baskett" candidate, but Cooper ripped the belt from him, for sure. If Wilson wasn't injured, they very likely would have carried 6 WRs (with Metchie now in the fold) on the 53 because Cooper would likely be claimed on waivers, and then see which lower-tier WRs they could get through to the PS and use as gameday call-ups, if needed.

With Wilson now likely to go on IR for the first 6 weeks, it gives them more roster flexibility for other positions, but at the cost of a really good blocking WR and tall body that Dotson, Cooper, and Metchie can't give them.

After Metchie, I think they would’ve kept Cooper and let Ainias hit waivers and hope to sign him to Practice Squad. Now, they’ll keep both.

Cooper looks like the real deal, from everything I’ve seen and heard. Even Jalen commented on how strong his hands are. Fantasy-wise, he has no impact, but he’ll be WR3 next year.

So, this roster isn’t finished. Big holes at CB2, EDGE depth, Safety (with Mukuba’s hammy- I think he’s have started if he stayed healthy) and depth all along the Oline. Ranked from most needy: LG, RG, swing Tackle, C.

Howie has 13 draft picks next year. Who’s on your trade or FA wishlist?

Yeah I can't think of any FAs or trade targets off the top of my head but I think we need to make moves at both CB2 and Starting Safety for sure right now. We might be OK at edge depth, I think they like what they've seen from Uche.

I do expect a BIG trade or an impactful one from Mr Howie Roseman within a week though if I'm being honest. Its just how he rolls.

I'll check maybe some guys who we had visits as prospects in the 2022/2023 drafts and see if any of those guys match up w our needs that still might need extensions at these positions and maybe other notable guys I can dig up and come back with some potentials

Z'Darius Smith would be some good edge depth. He must want too much money.

You would think Justin Simmons would have been signed by now if the Eagles were interested, he's practically begging to come here and is familiar with Fangio's scheme.

I'll just wait and see what Howie pulls out of his hat.

I can only imagine Howie's kicked the tires on Za'Darius Smith, and being 32, he probably wants too much and at least 2 years. The only other FA I see is Clowney, and I want no part of him.
I don't know what the deal is on Simmons- he seems like a natural fit, especially now. I like Sydney Brown, but he's a liability in Vic's system.

Maybe Marcus Williams at Safety? or Blackmon?

I'd love to see Rasul Douglas come back on a 1-year deal. Even Gilmore. I don't know about Asante Jr., the poor tackling concerns are a big red flag. I think he'd be an upgrade over Adoree Jackson. I worry about jakorian Bennett being a smaller Ringo, but I think the team likes him more than I do, I'll trust them if he ends up starting.

IOL depth, I think Howie is working the phones hard to try and trade for decent depth. We've been spoiled having top-shelf depth on the Oline, and this year it seems the cupboard is bare.
