That's even before you even factor in a sub who is actually an NFL-caliber player like Isaiah Rodgers instead of guys like Eli Ricks and Josh Jobe. They had a lack of talent in the secondary and linebackers and absolutely no depth at all back there. They could communicate all they wanted to, but you can't make chicken salad out of chicken ****.

This is a case of more than one thing can be true. Defensive talent improved and coaching improved. You can argue which had the bigger impact, but without a doubt both were improved from last year. They had enough talent last year to not be the worst defense in the league (and also not be the best), but they were a mess and never played like it.

With the talent this defense had in 2024, I think their floor, regardless of coaching would have been around 10th in the league. I don't think even Fangio could have saved the 2023 team, they just weren't good enough from the LB and secondary positions.

The only thing you can't account for is whether a different coach would have identified Baun as a viable option for LB instead of a special teamer/situational pass rusher.

Yeah, I don't think your interpretation of the situation is accurate. If Myles Garrett was a pariah around the league and/or teams don't want a 30 year old who wants a massive deal, then why would the Cleveland Browns take a "we're not trading him" stance. It defies logic. They'd want to move on from him and start over.

The more logical analysis is that the Cleveland Browns know how valuable the guy is as a player and teammate. The guy was a team captain, an AP1, and DPOY candidate. You don't trade guys like that away, you build around them. Players of his caliber can continue to produce well into their 30s (see, Reggie White, Bruce Smith, Michael Strahan, etc.). He's not some RB who will fall off a cliff due to wear and tear.

I get it, you don't like the guy. Just about every post you have about him you bring up his defending Watson. But you are way off base here.

No I don't think they extend Davis or Carter this year. I think they are saving space to do both next year. The longer they wait on Carter, the more expensive it will be.

Couple points to remember:

• 1st round picks can't sign an extension until they have completed 3 seasons, so next off-season is the earliest they can extend Carter but Davis is eligible right now.
• Even if they sign them to an extension before Year 4 (2026), it's just that, an extension of new years and (significant) raises in those years. But, the team is still getting the benefit of that cost controlled 4th year. It's Years 5+ that will now have the bigger cap hits. So, for Carter, they really don't have to save space for next year because his 4th year salary is the same in 2026, with or without an extension. But, yes, having him sign the extension as soon as possible to lock him in before other player contracts at the position continue to rise is best.
• An extension in Year 4 usually negates the 5th year option, because that player's new deal starts in Year 5. Sometimes teams will structure the extension so the 5th year pays what the option would have. They can do cap things to make it more palatable since the actual option can be expensive to exercise as it becomes fully guaranteed for that cap year and is based on the average of the 3rd-20th highest paid players at the position, playing time thresholds, pro bowls, etc.
• The 5th year option only comes into play if the player hasn't signed an extension in Year 4. The team has to decline or accept the the 5th year option by the week after the draft going into Year 5. Teams can exercise the option going into Year 5 and either (A) let the player play on it and then let them become a FA, (B) play on it and tag them for Year 6, (C) sign them to an extension before they become a FA at the end of the season.

For Jurgens, they have no choice but to make an extension decision on him this season. He wasn't a 1st round pick so his 4th season is the upcoming 2025 season which is the final year of his rookie deal. It's either extend him, let him go to FA, or tag him.

Off the radar right now, but still big and around the corner: Mailata's deal is up next season. So this season could be time to extend him (which for vets usually means that 2026 year gets re-worked with more money) so that is a realistic thing they are saving up for next year. He's going to need to be paid as the top LT at the time of signing it, so sooner the better.

I heard a story how the GM of the Bears was talking about what Vic always said he wanted "Get me DBs, Dbs, Dbs" then they drafted Roquan Smith in round 1 that year, and I guess the guy called him up and was like "You GOTTA be happy we took Roquan Smith" and Vic just kept telling him "DBs, Dbs"

Then first year, Howie goes and drafts 2 stud CBs round 1-2, Vic gets his first #1 Defense to go along with his first Super Bowl.
