My cousin lives in Detroit and texts me all the time how much fun it is up there, I might be a Lions fan for a year or two, until the Steelers clean house and start a real rebuild.I've repeatedly have stated if the Steelers sign Rodgers I will not root for them this season and root for a different teamIs there a purpose to this beyond picking a random NFL team? This is reminding me of Jerry MacGuire when he is on the phone with Rod Tidwell and all his other clients are moving on from him, and he ends up with just Rod. Steelers are sitting there watching everyone sign, and they are the phone with Aaron Rodgers.

What has he done lately? He was fairly pedestrian last year and is 40 years old. He's at best a 1 or 2 year stopgap for a team that isn't going to the Super Bowl with or without him. Why waste $90M on a short term "fix"?

I suppose it could be foolish depending on just how much money he wants. But the MVP types are getting 50-60mil/yr now, so ... Nineteen QB's were over $30M in 2024. I think he's likely still better than 27th unless he drops off this year. A resurgence is always possible as well with a new team, new system. Had he been outright bad last year I might think he's washed. But when he's still averagey-or-so, and was ridiculously good in his prime, I would be at least optimistic to have him as my starter.

His MVP days are long gone, so paying him for past successes is chasing fool's gold. He was in obvious decline for anyone who watched him last year, and the guy is a road show clown who doesn't shy away from throwing teammates under the bus publicly, like he did with Williams last season.

It sounded like they had a deal in place but then suddenly they changed their mind and wanted to test the market. Rumors are Steelers offered 2yrs at $30MM with $20MM guaranteed. Which is probably Y1 and signing bonus guaranteed only. And he left for $10MM more in guaranteed funds-- which is a steal.

The only upside to signing Rodgers is that he's not a free agent, he's a cut, so he won't count against the comp picks. But the extra $20+ million he costs above replacement is not worth the pick we'd be saving.
Just sign a cheap 1-year stopgap instead of an expensive 2-year stopgap who's also an *******.

Part of it is 100% an avenue to circumvent board rules and interject their own politics/agendas into every conversation they possibly can. Note how many Rodgers posts in just the past few pages can't hold back from bringing up non-football related crap in their posts. They want a cookie for the high moral fiber they put on display for randos on a football msg board lol.
I don't want to sign Rodgers if the asking price is what people are throwing around here. But I also don't think how he looked on the Jets last year is representative of his current ceiling. Doubt he's going to magically revert to 2017 Rodgers, but first off there was the injury he was coming off of, and secondly... please anyone feel free to tell me what QB HAS looked good on the Jets in the past decade.
I already said, my desire is Jameis. He's fun to watch, a good teammate, and while I may be in the minority on this one; I think he'd give us the highest chance of winning a playoff game we've had since Ben was in the backfield. The caveat there is having a great HC and OC in place to work with him. HC is debatable, but we also haven't had a good OC since Todd Haley. So just about a decade.
Regardless, I hope at this point we roll out the cheapest garbage we can find and finally get our losing season and a top 10 draft pick. Take a middle/late round swing on a QB this year, and then invest in a high profile one again next year. Gimme Shough, or for even cheaper Will Howard or Kurtis Rourke. Hope they can become a career backup and give them run next year for the first 1/3rd or 1/2 a season while the high draft capital rookie gets his feet wet.
Or you know, sign Russel Wilson, and have a repeat of last year. Let Tomlin and Arthur Smith get their panties in a twist when he's changing calls on the field (you know, like a competent QB should be doing), force him to run whatever vanilla crap comes in from the sidelines with 0 adjustments to what the defense is doing, go slightly over .500, and continue sucking butt for the next 5 years.

I can assure you I have plenty to say about his politics but will refrain and do so rather easily. All one had to do was watch him on the Jets last year to realize he was washed. And I'm talking about his arm talent, never mind his inability to scramble at all. He looked like a statue back there and it was like Tom Brady, only Rodgers couldn't move as well as Tom Brady could at the end of their careers.
If Rodgers were to drop the off-field distractions, forget about playing GM, and take about forty million less, then you might give him a shot given the Steelers' straits that they find themselves in.
But man, after watching him all year as a Jets fan, I don't know that you want him. The Giants might run it back with him, but they are desperate as desperate gets right now with both the front office guy and the coach being given an ultimatum. That's what is driving up Rodgers's price, I'll bet.

But if the rumor mill about Arthur Smith/Tomlin throwing fits about Russ changing calls on the field is true, I can't even imagine a world where they'd want Rodgers. To your points, that would likely be one of the last elite traits he has left in the tank to take advantage of because the rest has been/is on the decline.
Yeah honestly it comes down to the money/rebuilding the most for me. I truly think Rodgers gives us a better shot than just about anyone else who is/was available. I guess if I squint and focus on the the first 80% of last season I'd have said Bradford would have been my first choice. But at this point as a fan I'd just rather stink, and stink bad enough to get a high draft pick. And not tying up money in players is part of that stink it up and rebuild process. If they invest money anywhere I'd want it to be oline and dline. But that's about it.
Or I'd still settle for a Winston season of 30TDs and 30INTs to make it at least entertaining and get some highlight plays to DK and Pickens. Get Pickens stock up so we can trade away his crazy *** next season as part of the rebuild.

I knew you weren't directing it at me. At least I hoped. Even if so, no problem. I was guilty of doing that after the Sandy Hook thing, a thing which I'm unsure happened. That got me a bit. But I sort of vowed to keep that and any other politics out of the Shark Pool and I think I have. I even cheered for Aaron when he was playing as a member of the Jets and all that weirdness was forgotten. By all accounts, he was a good teammate in the locker room and although his GM'ing was not outstanding, he really did want to win.
This is awesome. Do you know how many times I did this with Sam when he played for the Jets. Darnold was Bradford in my world.
I will give you credit for that. I can never watch a team tank or not go for a championship. I know it's not the way it's done, but I can't help it. Every fall starts anew, every hope springs eternal and all that.
eta* I'm quite sure Sandy Hook happened. I'm not sure Rodgers said anything about it not happening. That's what I meant by that.

Hahaha crap... yeah a swing and a miss on that one. Well shows you how invested I was in the Steelers getting really any of these QB FAs lol.
Yeah it's been a long road to get here and I can 100% get people not understanding. I'm sure there are still a fair number of Steeler fans who'd rather be competitive each year. But in 2023 when we were getting curb stomped by the Bills I think 21-0 in the first round of the playoffs I was kinda just fed up. That's when I stopped defending Tomlin as much (though I still don't hate on him as much as some), and said I just wanted to start fresh with a clean slate.
So many half measures, so many temporary fixes with duct tape and super glue... to you're bolded point, it's honestly hard for me to even get excited anymore. As much as it obviously did not work out, actually was a semi disaster haha, I was envious of the Bears last season. Some brand new staff (as much as I thought beforehand Eberflus and Waldron were poo poo, there was still a glimmer of potential for it to not stink with the other 6-7 new hires), some awesome acquisitions/additions to the roster in FA/trades/the draft, including a brand new shiny QB. Sure you could be a realist and see the flaws, but it allowed fans to dream a little bit. Hope for something new and different. And this season they get it again with Ben Johnson steering the ship. That's really what I want at this point with the Steelers. Will a new HC be better than Tomlin? Maybe not. Probably safe to say most likely not. But it's a fresh start with some new views and new ways of doing things. I think it will at least get the franchise to a place where it's forced to be dynamic to get good again, rather than resting on its laurels in mediocrity.

I think the comedy show would be hilarious. Rodgers with his facial expressions after being sacked repeatedly and warming up the bus to throw others under it, DK and GP fighting on the field with defenders and smashing helmets on the sideline while competing to see who can take the most plays off in a game.

Why hasn't Rodgers been released yet?
While we await a decision from quarterback Aaron Rodgers on where he’ll play next, it’s worth noting he’s still under contract with the New York Jets and will be until 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. That’s because the Jets plan to release Rodgers with a post-June 1 designation, and the collective bargaining agreement states that a team must wait until “on or after the first day of that league year” to release someone with a post-June 1 designation.The Jets could have cut Rodgers weeks ago, but that would have meant $49 million in dead salary cap charges accelerating onto their 2025 cap as a result of the prorated signing bonus amounts remaining on his contract. By designating him as a post-June 1 cut, the Jets can spread that $49 million hit out over two years, taking $14 million in dead money charges this year and the remaining $35 million on their 2026 cap. The Jets must continue to carry his $23.5 million 2025 cap charge until June 2 as though he were still on the roster, even though he’ll be free to sign with any team he wants before then. And on June 2, the Jets will then get their $9.5 million in cap savings ($23.5 million minus the $14 million dead money charge).
As for where Rodgers will end up -- as of Tuesday morning, it was still between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. There are people around the league who believe Rodgers is still holding out at least some hope that the Minnesota Vikings might turn to him as their veteran “bridge” option after losing Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones in free agency. Indications out of Minnesota, however, continue to be that the Vikings aren’t likely to go down that road for fear of impeding J.J. I was so very Zen about the QB situation until so much A A Ron talk hit the fan. Theme was supposed to be a mobile QB right? 2-year deal and we draft a QB 2026. Rodgers will be lucky to survive 4 weeks behind this OL sans Moore and Daniels. Broderick Turnstyle Jones protecting your blind side doesn't give a QB much comfort.
Maybe the plan is for Rodgers to get hurt week 2 then make a comeback for the playoffs after going 9-8. Also think it'd be hilarious to get reports of Tomlin leaking dissatisfaction when Rodgers changes plays under center. If Rodgers sees something he likes, don't be surprised when he checks out of a run.

I think Aaron Rodgers will not be signed to an astronomical amount of money. I personally wouldn't sign Aaron to any contract regardless of price. I'd go after Milton like Leeroy mentioned or another promising backup. Maybe take a chance on Kirk Cousins by discussing a trade with Atlanta.
Steelers will need to re-sign TJ whose contract ends after the 2025 season. JJ Watt on the McAfee show more or less discussed that the Steelers need to address this sooner or later or something to that affect.
But the Siberia Browns who screwed up QB compensation by signing Mr. Touchy Feely have also screwed up Edge Rusher pay by re-signing the guy who thinks helmets are for swinging, not wearing.

I think his age is a pretty big knock, but at this point he is probably the best option. I don't think he is capable of running Smith's offense though.

I definitely agree plus he's aging and has missed games due to having injuries in 3 of the last 4 years. He might have 2-3 great years left.
