*** 2025 Pittsburgh Steelers: Rodgers injures wrist in win over Bengals (14 Viewers)

Defense seemed to do better when the qb had to hold on to the ball a little bit. It was something Herbig mentioned to reporters, when the secondary covers better the front 7 has time to get there and good things happen. Altho I'm not sure it was because of the secondary or the Colts gameplan, or just Daniel Jones. Either way it was awesome to see him getting hit all day long.

It's wild to me why the Colts didnt try to get Taylor going more. Looking back the Steelers did bottle him up pretty well. But probably because they didnt put too much commitment to that end. Putting the game in Daniel Jones hands was Steichen's fatal mistake. Who would have guessed.
 
Yeah couldn’t agree more. Yesterday’s game got off to a bad start and it looked like it was going to be a long day.

The Colts were able to move the ball but they really seemed determined to throw the ball despite the turnovers.

It was a fun day at the stadium. I really thought the Steelers were going to get blown out.
 
Ramsay at Safety should be permanent. Apparently we also played split safety coverage 46% of the time, as opposed to our season average of like 28%. Not sure if JPJ, Echols, and Slay are strong enough as the top 3 CBs though. Maybe Peppers comes in on Nickel or Dime packages and Ramsay kicks back to CB then?

This (or something like it) is what we'd have to expect, I hope. Ramsey kicks back to slot (where he is at his best) in certain packages. Based off results, Ramsey has to stay at S for the time being. It'd be nuts to stop what worked after seeing what didn't the past 6 weeks. The fact a brand new guy (who had, what, 2 practices?) came in and did a better job of staying on schedule than Thornhill or Clark at the other S is kinda telling. To me anyway.

Really interested to see the all 22 this week. Curious as to how much Zone vs. Man they ran this time out, as well as what they were doing with the back 4 when they blitzed vs. how they handled that the first 7 games.

Mikey and Austin deserve a lot credit for this week's gameplan. Wasn't perfect, plus they were dealing with injuries/new bodies, but it had been clear for a month they needed to do something different. It's too bad it seems to have taken Elliot getting hurt to finally motivate them to change it up, but hopefully this result will keep them from falling back into the "we're running X no matter what the other team does, cuz we run X!!"

They should have won by 20. That can't be a great sign. I believe there was another game earlier this year they got 4 turnovers and didn't win by much.

It's not a "great" sign, but this isn't an elite defense and it's not like the Colts can't put up points. It's a better sign than the last 5-6 weeks, given the opponent. Stonewalling Taylor with the heater he was on was impressive.

Wilson fumbling the ball where he did trying to be super man late wasn't helpful with regard to the final score either.

The Steelers not scoring off of that muff was a big blow -- some poor play calling down there. And Wilson's hurdle was inexcusable. Do something different there, and the score makes more sense.

The Steelers had a 17 point lead well into 4th quarter and would have won by 10 if not for that goofy fumble by Roman Wilson at the end of the game
 
This D will give up yards and scores, no doubt. If creating turnovers is their only path to success, then that's what needs to be coached up. In wins vs Indy and NE, 11 turnovers were the decisive factor.

Problem is what to do when there are no turnovers since it's not a sustainable path, and why in both games it was only decided by one score. They are missing big play ability on offense.

It's important they build off this win, and not get comfortable with the current status of the team.
 
When you have the get the ball back with 9:00 remaining in the game winning by 17, I don't think your goal is try to make an impressive victory for the ppl on the internet. It's probably to secure a win. In the grand scheme of things point difference is a miniscule consideration. I think it's like a 5th tie breaker for playoffs.

It's not about flash for the FF crowd, it's about crushing any hope for the opponent.
 
I don’t think this team is 1 more good wr away from being a contender so I’m kind of glad they’re not making a big splashy move. No need to trade away good picks.
 
Finally got a chance to eyeball some of the all 22s. Way, waaay less post-snap rotations yesterday. Way more two high shell. Way more quarters. Less blitzing.

In essence "more zone, less man, less fancy movement to try and disguise coverages, getting pressure mostly w/4 rushers"
 
I think I would have paid that price for Meyers, but the Steelers want as much draft capital as possible for the draft in Pittsburgh to make moves and to be at the podium a lot for the crowd/exposure apparently.

Yeah, I'd have paid that freight for Meyers. They'd have likely recouped both picks in comps anyway. Guess they feel like DK is indestructible? Or maybe they felt they weren't going to be able to meet his ask for an extension at the end of the year, so didn't want to add the second pick for a half a season (was seeing several sources on the innerwebz reporting they were in on him for a 4th up until the end, and the Jags upped their offer to include the second pick)? Who knows. He'd have been a really good fit for what they're missing in that room, for sure.

Regardless of what Mike said in his presser, It seems pretty safe to assume they're clearly viewing MVS as a guy who they could play at the X if DK goes down...cuz they quite literally don't have another guy who can do it on the roster at the moment 😅. I also doubt heavily that he's viewed by them as "just a PS guy" or that A-a-ron didn't have any input in bringing him in.

Personally I would have paid the little extra Rasheed cost but would have passed on Jakobi but not really up in arms over them not getting either nor would I have been upset if they pulled one off. Ambivalent I guess. I know a lot of people dislike George and/or think he just had to go but not me and either trade would have sat a little wrong with me as it's not a considerably amount less then they got for George. So had they done either deal it would have only reinforced my initial thought, they should have just kept Pickens and managed the situation.

I just think it's really hard for a WR to join a new system in the middle of the season and make a big impact and those two have better shots at doing that since they join coaches they just played under, which again is why I say had they done either of those deals I'd have just felt even stronger they should have kept George.

No issue with no deadline deal, kind of did an early beat the deadline deal already with Dugger anyway. People can quibble with the job Kahn has done, but can't knock his aggressiveness or willing to deal.

That may be a valid point about wanting all the draft capital for hosting the draft, not for nothing and it does not help now but few people I follow this time of year for the NFL draft are talking about how the WR class exceeded initial expectations and looks very strong right now, one of the top 3 positions in the draft class. We need to hit them in the draft like we used to a not so long time ago.

We're talking 4ths-6ths though. That's not exactly "splashy", and wouldn't mortgage much of anything. Hopefully no one wanted them to go burn 1sts on Waddle.

They have a pile of day 3 and beyond picks in the upcoming draft, and will probably receive more in comps. A couple mid-to-late rounders for Meyers or Shaheed, in a year where they are hella thin at WR and actually have a shot at the division because of circumstances, wouldn't have been an egregious misuse of resources from where I'm sitting.
 
There isn’t a more useless position in the NFL than a #2 or #3 WR in an Arthur Smith offense. We could have AB lined up next to Metcalf and he’d still only get like 4 targets a game.

We should have 5 top 100 picks next year (1st, 2nd, original 3rd, Cowboys 3rd for Pickens, and a comp 3rd for Dan Moore). Fields comp value is borderline 3rd/4th, so we’ll either have four 3rds or two 4ths. We’ll net four comp picks total.

We don’t need to trade that haul away. This team isn’t a legit contender. We have a failed pick in Broderick who won’t get a second contract. We need a LG. I like Jaylen Warren but the RB room needs more talent. We know what our WR room looks like. The D is old and slow, especially on the back end. The D line is still meh.

Oh yeah, and we need a young franchise QB, which is priority #1.

They need young players who can be producing for them 2-3 years from now (and hopefully under a new HC).

Meh. He can still throw. He just can't move. All the ball washing by Collinsworth/Tirico about how he was "looking so mobile!" was nonsense. He looked the least mobile he has all year this week, to me. He looked like had a refrigerator on his back on a couple of those rollouts/step ups.

The lack of mobility is made doulby an issue because they can't protect him long enough to let anything downfield develop. The few times he was able to avoid stuff this week, he over/under threw freaking everything. DK for a sure TD early, Jonnu for what may have been another one off a catch/run, etc.

They're running a gimmicky offense to camoflauge/limit their QBs lack of moblity/their OL's issues with pass blocking, and when they DO fall behind they don't have the players (or the plays) to really mount comebacks.

The Ravens will be leading this division by Thanksgiving.

The best thing that could happen to this franchise right now is losing out. They are in dire need of a complete philosophical change on both sides of the ball.

It's team construct

Flacco scores all day - and is the same guy.

But Metcalf is barely or not even Higgins and Austin, Wilson, and a quickly aging Fiermuth are eons behind what Cinncy has.
We needed to turn Pickens and Friermuth - both who catch well but the routes were way too slow - into anyone who can run a slant.

Kupp or Thielen from 2 years ago - something like that.

Read the D, run the quick route, box out and catch the ball.
I suppose they thought Jonnu and Pat were that?

We got to play it out but I would be playing for next year which is essentially get a QB, cut $$ on D and add speed and youth.

Rogers - bye
Slay - Bye
Ramsey - You are a good safety - and we will pay you to accept that.
Cam - save us money or bye
TJ - See Cam next year.
Highsmith/Herbig - trade one for a high need
Queen/Wilson - no longer the weak link - add via draft/fa
JPJ - whats the price. Could you please ask your Dad how to tackle?
OL - It looks fine-ish. Its good enough if you have a mobile QB. Note - all good teams have an at least semi mobile QB
Jonnu and Pat - nope - need a real TE
Austin/Wilson - both bust. Cue up every white boy NE WR guy till you get it. You need to run short routes into space, catch everything, get hammered, and break plays frequently.
5-11 175 and a 4.3 in the forty is irrelevant in the NFL

Like Tomlin said - were the same team that stunk it up 2 weeks ago.

It's not close and sadly it's not because of injuries. Our ceiling is so low.

Expected the loss but was surprised Rodgers was the primary cause. Smith’s play calling was horrendous as well.

Even a below average performance might have been enough to win that game. What we got was pathetic.

Pffffffffft... all the air came out of the balloon last night. Seeing Rogers missing wide open receivers was shocking. He seemed shocked as well.

Offense is so limited from a personnel standpoint that they have to play near perfect... can't waste opportunities.
 
I think Kahn deserves some criticism for his handling of the WR room. He trades a 2nd for DK, then makes DK one of the highest paid receivers. And this guy is not even as good as Pickens, who btw Kahn traded to Dallas for chump change. A few monthes later Kahn is trying to get another receiver, none of which are as good as Pickens.

Rodgers was bad last night, no doubt. But it's pretty clear a lack of decent targets for him is a big issue. His number 1 target right now could probably play offensive tackle full time.
 
Warren has clearly been their best offensive player for most of the year. They had him on the field for less than 50% of the snaps, in a game where he was the only guy who was showing any kind of pop on offense.

Consistently taking him off the field on 3rd and shorts, or 3rd and anythings for that matter, is just being willfully obtuse at this point.
 
Meh. Rodgers had a bad day at the office. Would have been a W if Rodgers didn't have his worst game. Speaks volumes how well Warren performed while the QB couldn't hit a barn door. Team should build that run game mentality and let A-a-ron work his magic whenever he wants to cook.

Beating a dead horse here but holy hell broderick jones is a major liability. Someone needs to drill proper technique with him till he learns to get his hands inside and stop lowering his helmet. No one teaches OL to let the defender get to his chest first on every play. Jones could be great with a good coach. Lack of effort is a concern too. Gives up on plays or does the minimum. Would LOVE to see Tomlin say he's going to bench him for a drive whenever he shows lazy effort. Play to the echo of the whistle or ride the pine.

This is old news but this is what I said after the Pickens trade and I'm only puling it up now because I get actively riled up about on a weekly basis watching this team play.

Only thing I think I got wrong was phrasing it as they got no better at WR. They got worse.

Pickens was a handful but fear does the work of reason and him in a contract year was always going to put him on his best possible behavior. It was a situation that probably could have been easily managed for a year and then he'd likely have got a 2027 third comp pick if they wanted to move on. A lot of issues with this team but this one was easy to see, and avoidable.

They built a win now team and got rid of their most explosive and dynamic offensive weapon and then found themselves in the trade market trying to acquire an inferior talent for about what they got for Pickens and could not even do that because the player apparently spurned them.

Great post. All of the talk has been about acquiring picks to move up to draft a QB next year, but with the liability that is Jones at LT, can you really put a rookie QB under that kind of assault and expect it not to be detrimental? Not to mention the likely need to replace LG.
 
Seeing it everywhere that the Steelers signed Asante Samuel, Jr. to the PS. Assume he'll be "put on the moving train" sooner than later, given Slay's concussion stuff. Maybe they'll sign a new non-fused spine for him tomorrow. :geek: Has made his fair share of plays on the ball, will give him that.

35 missed tackles in his career? He'll fit right in. 😅

Oh, don't get me wrong, its not a bad stab. Nearly a decade younger than Darius Slay, and used to actually make plays on the ball. If it turns out he isn't healthy enough to actually contribute, you lose nothing. If it turns out he still got a little game left, he's young enough to consider keeping around.

He's more of a zone guy, so maybe this means they're going to dispense with all of these Cover 1 blitz looks that they've been getting ripped on all year. They went back to running more of them this week than they did against the Colts, and I'm not sure why. I guess they thought the two high shells and man match worked too good?
