Surprised not much mention of this... it appears 3 Battalions of Illegal Russian Mercenary fighters (ChVK Vagner) attempted to take a US held Oilfield in Deir El-Zour.

“Commenting on the incident, U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said: “It was self-defense. Obviously, we are not getting engaged in the Syrian civil war.”

U.S. military officials said the coalition was in contact with Russia before, during and after the February 7-8 attack and had alerted Russia to the presence of SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) personnel in that area.

Mattis said the Russians had told the American military that they did not have any forces there.”

We reportedly then killed 217 (Russian independent news outlet) to 300 (Bloomberg) of the Troops and destroying pretty much all of their tanks and personnel carriers.

Russian spokeswoman claiming 5 lost, but actual audio transmissions from the Vagner forces indicate the degree of the massacre:

The reports that are on TV about … well, you know, about Syria and the 25 people that are wounded there from the Syrian f*** Army and — well … to make it short, we’ve had our asses f*** kicked. So, one squadron f**** lost 200 people …right away, another one lost 10 people… and I don’t know about the third squadron but it got torn up pretty badly, too… So three squadrons took a beating… The Yankees attacked… first they blasted the f*** out of us by artillery and then they took four helicopters up and pushed us in a f*** merry-go-round with heavy caliber machine guns….They were all shelling the holy f*** out of it and our guys didn’t have anything besides the assault rifles… nothing at all, not even mentioning shoulder-fired SAMs or anything like that…So they tore us to pieces for sure, put us through hell, and the Yankees knew for sure that the Russians were coming, that it was us

There’s a good bit more to the Audio recordings if you care to follow the link...

Obviously with US and Russian forces both playing in the same sandbox, interaction would seem to have been inevitable.

With these being illegal mercs, Russia can’t get too outwardly hostile... but while it’s nice seeing our boys lay the hate down and easily fending off an attack... one was to worry about escalation between the two sides?

google news feed about it.

not the right story currently for media to want to run with? also seems like it's still somewhat unverified in terms of numbers.

I woulnd't have heard about it if you hadn't created the thread. tahnks

Seems like it should be a bigger story.  Wow.
Yeah I’m shocked. I mean I know there are tons of hired mercenaries clashing out there but this is the only instance I’ve seen of a direct US / Russian clash. Especially one with what seems like significant casualties.

Very odd that it’s basically being ignored.

One interview with a Russian Merc commander:

“The man said that after reports that US forces earlier this month crushed an advance of fighters loyal to the Syrian government — troops said to have contained hundreds of Russians — he had seen a change in the volunteers.

"Now it's more about getting revenge than it is about money," he said.”

So now their is a rise in Russians volunteering to fight as Mercenaries in Syria specifically to get revenge against US led forces... what could go wrong here?

This quote is also a bit disconcerting:

“But just because Russia's military, which has considerable airpower nearby, didn't protect the Russians involved in the battle doesn't mean it didn't know about the advance.

Citing US intelligence reports with intercepted communications, The Washington Post reported last week that a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin told a senior Syrian official he had "secured permission" from the Kremlin before the advance.

Reuters has reported that the advance on US-backed forces was intended to gauge the US's response, which may have been stronger than anticipated.

The paramilitary chief told France 24 that one Russian contractor had 150 men in freezers who were described to him as "minced meat." According to the man, the families of Russians killed in the battle won't be informed until after Russia's election in March — if at all.”

Putin is no fool. Why would he send hundreds of mercenaries to slaughter without air support. To simply gauge our response? To not formally tip their hand with actual Russian military involvement?

Either way, good to know our boys aren’t ####### around over there...

Also, can we PLEASE keep this thread apolitical as possible and just discuss this incident it’s developments and implications. It would be nice to keep what could be a very serious development free from the usual fate by the usual suspects.

I think this will likely bleed into politics though... media non-coverage, putin.. but I'm with you in hoping it can be discussed without.

Russia sending SU-57 stealth fighter prototypes to Syria... for mysterious reasons. Election gimmick, or Plausible to counter US domination of Russian Mercenaries?

https://www.haaretz.com/whdcMobileSite/world-news/russia-s-stealth-fighters-in-syria-are-putin-s-election-gimmick-1.5847755

“On an airstrike mission, stealth fighters are optimized to take out high-value targets defended by multiple anti-aircraft batteries, utilizing their evasive features to penetrate defenses and carry out precision strikes. All these advanced capabilities are superfluous on a routine Russian sortie over Syria, which consists of dropping tons of explosives on hospitals and bakeries.”

The article does go on to say that 4 prototypes would be no match for our F-22’s in the region and their shiny new “state of the art” weapons getting smoked out of the sky would be disastrous politically for Putin.
