30 Years Ago Today (6/12/94) - O.J. Simpson Murders (1 Viewer)

On this day 30 years ago, Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman were murdered by O.J. Simpson. It still blows my mind that a guy who had the life that OJ did actually committed a double murder. I've often wondered if OJ went to Nicole's house that night with the intent of killing her or if he went over there to just stalk her and lost his mind when he saw her with Goldman. I think he went over there to kill her.

Just two months before the murders, OJ and Nicole (along with their kids) went to Cabo San Lucas in a last ditch attempt to reconcile. (There's a picture of them with the Kardashians who were also there, as well as a few others.) After returning to LA, Nicole informed OJ that she would not get back with him. The relationship was over and she was ready to move on with her life. OJ could not handle this. Over the next several weeks OJ made the decision to kill her. He picked the perfect time to do it. It would happen on a Sunday night right before he was to fly to Chicago for a corporate golf outing. This was going to be a murder mission. Well-planned and all business.

The night of the murders OJ went to Kato's bungalow to ask him for change for a $100 bill so he could get something to eat. This would give him an alibi for the time before his flight to Chicago, but then the first thing goes wrong that night. Kato asks OJ if he can go with him to grab food. OJ pauses before answering and eventually says OK. He had to say OK or else how would it look after the fact if he had turned Kato down? The two of them go to McDonald's and return home. No problem. OJ still has time for the murder mission. He changes into dark clothes, black shoes, and a knit cap. He puts on gloves and has a knife. He removes the bulb from the interior light of the Bronco and heads over to Nicole's condo.

In OJ's mind this is going to be a quick and simple job. All business. He'll gain entry into the condo, slit her throat and hop back into the Bronco without leaving a trace of evidence. Even if they find something like a hair or a fingerprint, so what? He's been in that condo many, many times. It's where his kids live. OJ pulls up in the alley behind the condo, grabs the knife with his gloved hand, and just before he opens the door, he is surprised to see Nicole walking out of the condo to the front gate to let in a young man. This is the second thing to go wrong. Goldman's presence at the condo causes OJ to fly into a fit of rage. This is no longer going to be an all business, quick and easy murder, this is now going to be a rage killing, double murder.

A demon-eyed OJ rushes the two of them at the front gate, knocking down Nicole first with the butt end of the knife. He then turns his attention to Goldman who in OJ's mind is every guy that has been with and will be with Nicole. He takes all of that rage out on Goldman, stabbing him more than 15 times. Goldman fights ferociously for his life but is mortally wounded. OJ turns his attention back to Nicole. He picks up her head, stabs her 4 times in the neck and slices her throat with such force that his knife cuts a quarter inch into her cervical spine. He returns to Goldman's body and stabs him in the neck several times to ensure he is dead. During the struggle with Goldman, OJ lost his cap and the glove on his left hand. It's very dark where the murders occur and OJ cannot see the cap or glove on the ground. He feels around but cannot locate either. Nicole's dog comes out of the condo to investigate and begins to wail. OJ needs to get out of there before he's spotted. He walks back to the Bronco and heads back home, almost getting into an accident on the way with a women who recognizes him and jots down his partial license plate thinking he was a drunk driver. Upon arriving home, he sloppily parks the Bronco on the street and hops the neighbors fence onto his property as to avoid being seen by the limo driver who is already waiting at his gate to take him to the airport. He runs behind the bungalows where he bumps into the air-conditioner behind Kato's room and drops his other glove back there. He eventually makes his way to the front door of his house and heads inside.

It's rarely talked about but the presence of Goldman at the condo changed everything for OJ. Goldman being there made OJ fly into a fit of rage and what was to be a "simple" killing inside the condo turned into a mess of a crime scene. He left his cap there. He left one of his gloves there. He cuts his finger and drips blood all over the murder scene. He steps in blood and leaves footprints all over the sidewalk. His blood drops are on the back gate. His blood is on and around the door handle of the Bronco. There is blood from all three of them inside the bronco. He drops the second bloodsoaked glove on his own property. He drips blood on his driveway. He drips blood inside the foyer of his house. There is blood on his socks which he leaves in his bedroom. NONE of this likely happens if Goldman was not there at that exact time. In fact, if Goldman had met OJ a half hour before or after he killed Nicole, OJ likely shakes his hand and signs an autograph if asked. How unlucky was Goldman to be there at the exact moment that OJ was going to kill his ex-wife? If Nicole's mother doesn't drop her glasses outside the restaurant, Goldman is likely still alive today. If Kato doesn't ask OJ is he can tag along to eat, Goldman is likely alive. If Goldman heads straight to Nicole's house to drop off the glasses instead of going home to change first, he's likely still alive.

As far as OJ goes, if Goldman wasn't there he likely doesn't leave the cap and glove behind. He doesn't cut himself. He doesn't step in blood and track it all over the scene. There is no blood in the Bronco. He doesn't drop the other glove behind the bungalow. There is no blood on his driveway or in his foyer. There is no blood found on the socks. By the time OJ's kids discovered their mom's body (how messed up is it that OJ would have done that to his kids?), OJ would have been on the golf course in Chicago. Without any of the overwhelming evidence that was present at the actual murder scene would he have even been charged with her murder? OJ may even have imagined a Jesse Smollett type situation where he gets public sympathy for the horrific tragedy that has happened to him. He could have said, "She had been running with a bad crowd. That's why you hear me on those 9-11 calls going crazy. I was warning her that she needed to be more careful, especially with our children living in that condo. I think it was payback for a drug debt that wasn't paid." That's not how it ended up going though.

RIP Nicole and Ron. 30 years ago today you were taken away far too soon.

There was a podcast a few weeks ago with the limo driver, Allan Park, where he shared tidbits about the night and week of the murders. Things I had never heard before. Interesting listen if you're interested.

I am friends with the girl who is credited, along with her bf at the time, for letting the police know OJ was in the Bronco driving north through Orange County on the 5 fwy.

And damn that is a long time ago.

Quick-cut archival footage captures the various US sporting events on the day in question and the emotions they generated, including the opening of the World Cup soccer tournament, the Knicks/Rockets NBA Finals, Arnold Palmer's last round in the U.S. Open, and the New York Rangers' Stanley Cup victory celebration. One event, however, overshadows them all: O. J. Simpson's run from the police.

I have never followed this case nearly as much as you, but I have a question. What did you think of the angle that OJ's son Jason murdered them and OJ did the whole Bronco chase and everything else to pull the attention away from his kid?

He doesn't drop the other glove behind the bungalo.

This is a lot of detail. You wrote this?
I did. I'm kind of a true crime junkie.

I have never followed this case nearly as much as you, but I have a question. What did you think of the angle that OJ's son Jason murdered them and OJ did the whole Bronco chase and everything else to pull the attention away from his kid?
No, I don't believe that for a second. OJ's DNA was at the scene. Jason's has only 50% of his father's DNA. It wouldn't have matched what they found. Also, his whereabouts were investigated and he had a solid alibi for the time of the murders. Detective Tom Lange has said on numerous occasions that there wasn't a single piece of exculpatory evidence that pointed to anyone else.

One question I've thought about is did Goldman know it was OJ Simpson who was attacking him? It was really dark and things happened so fast. Did he recognize him as he was being stabbed? Or did he think it was just a random guy? If he did recognize Simpson during the murder imagine how surreal that must have been. Imagine you go to someone's house to do a good deed and return something to them and out of nowhere Charles Barkley or Peyton Manning comes flying at you with a knife and starts stabbing you. You'd be like, what the hell? I know this guy! Poor Goldman is just walking down a sidewalk on a quiet Sunday night without a care in the world. He rings the buzzer at Nicole's condo. She let's him in, they chit-chat for a second and out of the blue comes one of the greatest football players ever to end his life. From Goldman's perspective, his final moments must have been both terrifying and so bizarre.

I heard another interesting tidbit on a podcast about OJ. One of the detectives in the Nevada kidnapping and robbery case that OJ went to prison for went to Florida to escort OJ back to Nevada so he could be arrested. On the flight, OJ was in the window seat and he began looking at his reflection in the window and saying things like "I can't believe you did this to us! What the hell are you trying to do to us!" The detective said he didn't know if OJ was doing it to come off like he was crazy or if he was actually nuts. Either way he said it completely freaked him out.

I did Marcus Allen’s wedding at OJ’s house. I am way too familiar with the whole thing. In a way, that could have been me.
Did the wedding how?
I was the GM of the wedding company that did the wedding. I was on site multiple times before the wedding. And I executed the event day of. I got dressed in Kato Kaelin’s room with Marcus and all the groomsmen.

Let's choose our words carefully here.

Wow, that's crazy. Any other football players at the wedding?

Come on, you can’t drop something like this without giving us something juicy!
We stored all of the extra crap, boxes, tables, glassware, glass racks down the same side of the garage/ side house that the glove was found. Kato’s room was a good 40-50 feet down a 4’ wide tight walkway with shrubbery from the next property coming over and through the fence. I’ve always thought, having been in that uncomfortable space, that the cops did a damn thorough job searching that property.

And there’s zero doubt in my mind that OJ did it.

Yes. It was a star studded affair. I honestly don’t remember who all was there. At the time, I was doing a lot of similar events.

OJ made a video right after the acquittal and he did a segment where you can see that walkway behind Kato's bungalow.

Here is it

Pretty crazy how terrible the police and prosecutors were at their job and how good OJ’s lawyers were at theirs.
Quite possibly one of the worst hack jobs I had ever seen. Darden was god awful.....I mean atrocious. And Marcia Clark......a train wreck.
Ito was a hack judge too...he lost all control of his courtroom.

OJ had the best of the best defending him and of course a conflicted jury where some were looking to get even for the Rodney King case. I mean this was a tragic outcome because anyone with half a brain knows.....OJ did this. And it was brutal. A brutal double homicide.

Such a tragedy.

OJ Made in America is an amazing doc from ESPN Films and one I have watched several times and I still get so angry he got off.

At the time there had never been something like this with respect to reports in the courtroom, court TV, and everything else surrounding the circus. I am not sure if any prosecutors or judge had a fighting chance.

@Willie Neslon since you seem to know a lot about this how much of the evidence was not allowed to be presented to the jury. I remember back in the day thinking that it was unfair to lambaste the jury over their verdict because they did not get to see all the evidence that was out there because it wasn't allowed so they had to go just what was presented in court. My recollection was that there was a lot of stuff the general public new regarding DNA, blood evidence, etc that was irrefutable with regards to OJ being guilty but that it never made it into trial because the defense attorneys doing a great job and the prosecutors being overmatched. Am I misremembering?

The jury definitely saw much of the DNA evidence. Nine weeks of the trial was focused solely on DNA. The jury had grown tired and were exhausted of hearing about it for that long and I think it was Marsha Clark who said in some interview or documentary that all of that evidence went over their heads. I'm pretty sure there is actually trial footage where the jury groans at one point after being told an attorney was going to spend more time that day going over some DNA stuff and Ito, hearing the jury's displeasure, cut the day short and sent everyone home.

I guess I was meaning, how much evidence out there for the public was not allowed into the trial? I thought there was quite a bit of things just not allowed in so while the public were aware because of the immense news coverage it wasn't allowed to be considered by the jury. Again, I could be misremembering as i am old and can't remember things..haha

Also, DNA was relatively new for this type of thing so it wasn't as automatic to believe like it is today. There was some magic hocus pocus feel to it back then to where it could have been doubted a little. This case brought DNA evidence into the forefront for trials (again, if I am remembering correctly) to a place it had never been before.

There was some but I don't think it was a huge amount. There were definitely things presented in the civil trial that weren't presented in the criminal trial. Al Cowlings testimony for example. Also there was Ron Fischman and his wife where the wife testified in the civil trial that Nicole said there was a key to her condo that was missing and she thought OJ had stolen it. There were things I remember that were not presented or limited at the criminal trial like the jury only being allowed to listen to a couple of snippets from the Fuhrman tapes. Also, Clark chose not to put the woman on the stand who OJ almost hit with his Bronco fleeing the murder scene because the woman sold her story to Hard Copy. I'm sure there was more stuff that Ito didn't allow in but I can't remember exactly what off the top of my head.

I didn't remember the trial taking so so long. How do you need 9 weeks to go thru DNA items? That's more time than a organic chem course takes.

So my story comes from the other side of the country. I was a caddy at Pine Hollow CC on Long Island and OJ was a guest there. He actually golfed in the foursome right in front of mine and I saw him a few times on the tee box or as we crossed groups. After his round I remember a huge to do made by the member to hurry up with his bag and car as OJ needed to catch a flight back to LA.

That weekend I was in NJ with my then GF at a bar bragging about how I just met OJ and sure enough thats when the white Bronco footage started playing on the TV.

The oddest thing is that OJ gave their caddy his Rolex as a 'tip' but I guess he knew that he prob wouldn't need it.

Don't forget how badly the LAPD bungled the handling of the evidence. They had done it all the time, but against poor defendants with public defenders, they got away with it. It took a well-funded defendant with a top-notch legal team for them not to get away with it.

"I won't rest until I've found the real killer. Now excuse me, I need to take a nap."
That's not totally fair. He also spent extensive time on golf courses looking for the killer, he must have suspected a caddy.
Or a groundskeeper. Perhaps Carl Spackler.
I do remember a scene where Spackler was talking about killing all the golfers. He then had to be told that he could only kill gophers.

A huge piece of evidence, which didn’t land at the criminal trial, was the shoe print at the murder scene. Size 12 Bruno Maglias. They only found a pic with OJ wearing the exact same shoe (at a football game) after the criminal trial. It was introduced as evidence in the civil case.

I still remember being at the jersey shore for HS senior week and having a party at our rental with the NBA Finals on in the background and them breaking into coverage of the white Bronco chase. Right now my son is at his HS senior week, staying on the same street that I did for mine, exactly 30 years later. :o

I remember exactly where I was. In my apartment with some buddies watching the Finals….then this **** show came on.

Was insane.

One memorable quote I recall from Faye Resnick’s book regarding the origin of Allen’s nickname, “Driftwood.”

Resnick and Brown were walking on the beach one day -

“Nicole stopped suddenly, bent down and picked up a chunk of driftwood. She held it out in front of her and said, ‘This is Marcus Allen.’ . . . ‘This is the size of Marcus Allen.’” (p. 102-103)
