I love the creepieness and chills of the Changeling
Another entertaining 70s horror flick is Race With Devil starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates and Loretta "Hot Lips" Swit. I have heard that a remake is currently being filmed.
Original or American ?ETA: I like the OP's idea, but don't know if I'll get through 31 this month. I am trying to dig deep for some horror movies this month though, and plan to watch more than usual.Carver said:Tonight starts my own personal 31 for 31 (TY to the OG poster for the idea). Gonna kick it off with "Dark Water".
Just curious - is this overall rating or horror movie rating? Also - maybe copy and paste the reviews in the "recently viewed movie" thread.Alright, kicked it off this morning with John Carpenter's The Thing.Had too much things to do later on.
Love this movie. This is one of the few horror/sci-fi flicks to hold up well, being almost 3 decades old.The sets are very well made, creepy, and detailed. The explosions are fascinating. The shape-shifting alien parasite creature "the thing" has come to reality in this movie. Really enjoyed Kurt Russell's character a lot.
4.5/5
next up: Event Horizon
If we try to avoid a lot of doubling up, we could get reviews of 120+ horror movies in here.I'm in for the 31 in 31. Will raid the local family video tonight and post reviews here.
Excellent flick. The original 1951 The Thing From Another World is also very good.Alright, kicked it off this morning with John Carpenter's The Thing.Had too much things to do later on.

Dude... Netflix has a free month trial promo. You can sign up for the 3 dvd's out at a time and literally bang out 14 nights of flicks, PLUS all the movies you want to stream on the PC for free. Just gotta remember to cancel (if you want to), the day before your suscription ends.I'm in for the 31 in 31. Will raid the local family video tonight and post reviews here.

I would say that The Thing is a top 10, probably top 5 horror movie for me. Some of the alien effects are a little campy and outdated now, but you can't deny the movie's mood and creepiness.
Great start. The OG Japenese version (2002)Original or American ?ETA: I like the OP's idea, but don't know if I'll get through 31 this month. Please unwrap this a little.I loved event horizon.I said before, I wish that the stuff Paul Anderson had to cut from Event Horizon still existed. It could have been a lot creepier but for the stuff the suits made him take out.
Chiller has some also - this being Halloween month and all. They do a good job every year with the classics. BTW: Halloween 3 is a pretty decent stand alone flick in it's own right.AMC has a bunch of movies they're showing this month:

From Wikipedia:Anderson claims that his initial cut of the film, before the visual effects had been completed, ran to about 130 minutes in length. The film was even more graphic in this incarnation, and both test audiences and the studio were unnerved by the gore. Paramount ordered Anderson to cut the film by thirty minutes and delete some of the violence, a decision that he regrets. Some of the lost scenes were offered as special features on the 2006 DVD but were taken from poor quality video tape, the only format in which the scenes now exist; the studio had little interest in keeping unused footage and the film has since been lost. Please unwrap this a little.I loved event horizon.I said before, I wish that the stuff Paul Anderson had to cut from Event Horizon still existed. You and I are probably the only people that like it.BTW: Halloween 3 is a pretty decent stand alone flick in it's own right.![]()
Eh, sorta. I guess you could say if you mixed Alien with the Exorcist that you'd get Event Horizon.Really, I didn't care for it. I wouldn't say it was a waste of 90 minutes, but I could have lived without seeing it.How have I not seen Event Horizon? Isn't it just another Alien ripoff?
Good start, and wise decision not to see the original. The OG Japenese version (2002)Original or American ?ETA: I like the OP's idea, but don't know if I'll get through 31 this month. You'll probably get a lot of disagreement over this one. Not sure I'd be in my top 10, but I really liked the movie. I think AD might be in the minority of people who don't like Event Horizon. That's one that I usually recommend to people, as I thought it was creepy as hell.By the way, I know we've done this thread about 10 other times. These are probably the 10 best ever. The Blair Witch Project
Cannibal Holocaust? Is that the one in which they really kill the cat - like let it be eaten alive by eats on film?KarmaPolice said:One movie I keep pimping that not many have watched is A Tale Of Two Sisters.![]()
Also, another gem that I forgot about (or trying to get out of my mind) is Cannibal Holocaust. Not for those with a weak stomach, though.

Many of the censorship issues with Cannibal Holocaust concern the on-screen killings of animals, which remains a major issue today. Seven animals were killed during the film's production, six of which are seen on screen:[1]
A coatimundi (mistaken as a muskrat in the film) is stabbed multiple times in the neck by an actor.
A large turtle (about three feet long) is captured in the water and dragged to shore, where it is then decapitated and its limbs and shell removed. The actors proceed to cook and eat the turtle.
A large spider is killed with a machete.
A snake is killed with a machete.
A squirrel monkey has its face cut off with a machete.
A pig is kicked twice and then shot with a rifle.
Many condemn this as animal cruelty for the purpose of mere sensationalism and only to attract controversy, and it has also been called "animal torture." Deodato himself has condemned his past actions,[8] saying "I was stupid to introduce animals."[28]
Event Horizon is pretty damn cool, of course I was a teen when I last saw it. No Aliens and more mind #### material. Should be worth a watch considering your tastes. How have I not seen Event Horizon? Isn't it just another Alien ripoff?
And the best part is that the movie was realistic enough that the director supposedly had to go to court to prove that he DIDN'T also kill the actors in the movie.
That's pretty awesome. Imagine the exposure a film like that would receive this day in age. There used to be a term for films were they kill real animals, but its not coming to mind right now.I used to collect obscure VHS horror films about 15 years ago. I had one about a house infested with cottonmouth snakes. They killed a few hundred real snakes in it. I'm not approving of this type of filmmaking and it really isn't necessary anymore, but there is something about it that keeps you watching. And the best part is that the movie was realistic enough that the director supposedly had to go to court to prove that he DIDN'T also kill the actors in the movie.
All that aside (it's why I said it's for strong stomachs only) I thought the film was very interesting - Blair Witch long before there was Blair Witch.
I need to watch this again...Chaka said:
IMO everyone needs to see this at least once.Blaire Witch creeped me out big time. A lot of it has to do with the fact that the trails I love to hike are very similar to the ones in the film. The whole thing just had the look of a real hiking experience to me.:shudder:You'll probably get a lot of disagreement over this one. Not sure I'd be in my top 10, but I really liked the movie. That is one that scared the hell out of me as a kid. I remember seeing that at the drive in.Another entertaining 70s horror flick is Race With Devil starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates and Loretta "Hot Lips" Swit. I have heard that a remake is currently being filmed.
Serpent and the Rainbow is one of my favorites in the genre. Saw it about 7-10 years ago and still enjoyed it. I would gladly watch it again...in fact you may have inspired me.I vaguely remember Monkey Shines, would like to see a current review. It's been awhile since I've seen it, so I don't know if they hold up but I thought of a couple others that I used to love back in the day:
Serpent and the Rainbow
Monkey Shines
That's a pretty liberal rating for this movie. I saw it in the theater in HS. Caught it on TV a few years ago and couldn't believe how cheesy bad it was.Realized today that I had a Craven triple feature on dvd I hadn't watched before.
People Under the Stairs
It's basically ghetto Goonies with a killer rottweiler, a pack of cannibals, and a shotgun wielding sado-masochist in a full bondage suit. Pretty creepy, but really all camp. Might be pretty fun to rewatch. Loved the ending.
