49ers fire offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye (1 Viewer)

Can't say I am surprised.

Now, who is gonna be held accountable for the suckage of the 49ers defense? Over 450 total yards allowed to the Chiefs offense? Oof.

They put all their eggs, and then some more, in the "beat the Saints" basket. That game, if won, was supposed to cure all the 49ers' ills.

More from LaCanfora:

QB Coach Mike Johnson takes over coordinator duties from Jimmy Raye, who had received a vote of confidence from Singletary Sunday.

I just dropped the SF Defense, they rank worse right now in my league. Funny thing is they are still projected #1... yeah right

they play ATL, so I am not playing them... but is there still hope for them down the road? Maybe I'll pick them up later for week 10-12 if they start performing.... they face Stl, RB, Ari in those weeks

Desperation Move #1 by Mike Singletary.

Next he will fire the Defensive Coordinator.

Then he will bench Alex Smith.

Then he will bench David Carr.

At some point he will be out on an island all by himself and he will realize that he has nobody left to blame.

Singletary looks totally lost on the sidelines, not organized at all. The 49ers are always in chaos around the bench during the games.

Singletary was quoted as saying "we need to make some tough decisions," which translates to, "time for me to start scrambling to save my butt."

Niner fans want to believe (as always), so they'll give him another couple of weeks. They are very likely to lose at Atlanta, and if Smith plays badly in that game he'll likely be the next scapegoat; his decent performance against New Orleans means he'll survive this week.

If the Niners win either of the next two games, Singletary will survive until at least mid-season. If they lose them both, he might be out at 0-5. There's definitely a sense that he's losing the team, and that being motivational is pretty much his only coaching skill. Calling three timeouts to score a meaningless last-second TD last night is being taken as desperation.

49ers | Jimmy Raye's job not in jeopardy Mon Sep 27, 10:40 AMSan Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said he will have some hard decisions to make after the team's Week 3 loss, but he will not relieve offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye of his duties, according to Matt Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee. Singletary added Raye will be the team's offensive coordinator the rest of the season.

All we need is some more Senior Bowl Singletary soundbites to remind everyone what a great coach he is.

I have no idea what kind of coach Mike is, and I don't really think anyone else knows either; we are still waiting to find out. But I always wondered why some intense looks and colorful comments made his head coaching success a foregone conclusion.

Yep. The moment where he had to run on to the field to get the ref's attention to call timeout with about 2:15 left in the game against NO said it all. First off, an organized coach would have told his defensive captain to immediately call timeout if they stopped the Saints on that 3rd down on a play that kept the clock running.Second, an organized coach would have went up to the ref before the play and told him that he was gonna call a timeout if they stopped them and the clock was still running, that way the ref would know to look to him immediately (kind of like if an offense is gonna run a trick play and the QB lets the ref know ahead of time so they don't blow it dead, like on a fake spike or something). They lost like 10-12 seconds in the time it took for Singletary to get the ref's attention to get the TO called. It ended up not mattering, as they got the tying scored with plenty of time to spare, but it still spoke volumes about how unorganized Singletary is. But he is still a young head coach, relatively speaking, so he is probably still learning about game and clock management and whatnot.

I love moves like this. Mind you, I'm not defending Jimmy Raye as an asset for a contending franchise, but the notion that he's the blame for what's been a completely lost start for the 49ers is laughable. The offense was a question mark entering the season. People thought it would be better with a better o-line, Gore, an emerging Crabtree, and Vernon. But no one was touting it as a Top 10 offense, either. This was a team that was going to do just enough offensively to win a division title because it's DEFENSE was going to be dominant.

:D
49ers | Jimmy Raye fired Mon Sep 27, 11:12 AM

Updating a previous item, the San Francisco 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, reports Jason La Canfora, of NFL Network, according to a league source. Quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson will take over offensive coordinator duties, according to the source.
Two take-aways from this flip-flop:1) Singletary is clueless

2) The inability of the Niners management to admit they were wrong will make them slag anyone they can to protect their own self-image. This could mean that Singletary goes before Alex Smith (contrary to my earlier prediction), while they trot out the tired "he's now on his seventh offensive coordinator" story.

So this pretty much throws their entire offensive scheme out the window, which they've been learning and practicing since training camp. This is going to be awesome.

Those three teams that fired their OC a few days before the season last year ... remind me how that turned out for them the rest of the 2009 season?

Oh yeah ...

I doubt the scheme is gone. I think it's more about play calling and communication. How is the relationship between Smith and Johnson??

Earlier this morning, Rosenthal posted that 49ers coach Mike Singletary gave offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye the dreaded vote of confidence. Singletary specifically said that Raye will remain in the job for the rest of the season. Apparently, the 49ers' season is over. (As a practical matter, it possibly is.) Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network reports that Raye has been fired.

Unless Singletary decided to pull an Andy Reid about-face in a matter of hours, it's possible that the order came from higher up in the organization, possibly with a "fire Raye or you're out" ultimatum. Then again, we continue to believe that no one in the 49ers organization would have the nerve to tell Singletary that he's out of a job.

Still, the move brings to mind whispers around the league the Singletary wasn't ready to become a head coach after being elevated into the position during the 2008 season.

LaCanfora also reports that Mike Johnson has been promoted into Raye's job. Two weeks ago, Singletary and others in the organization suspected that Johnson was the "rat" who spoke to the media about Raye's actual or perceived flaws in calling plays quickly.
This should go well.

Rex Ryan?

Jimmy Raye is a horrible OC. The 49ers made the right call here.
Firing him three games into the season when their defense ranks at or near the bottom of the league in TDs allowed, turnovers force and sacks? Sorry, but few people thought Jimmy Raye was a brilliant OC in the first place, so the SMART move would have been replacing him after last season. To keep him, tout the continuity he brought, and then release him after an 0-3 start is just about the antithesis of a "right call." The 49ers aren't making many right calls this year. This IS fueling my speculation though that someone like Gruden or Reid will be handed the keys to the 49ers kingdom in 2011, likely with a shiny new signal caller like Luck or Mallet to boot.

Now they just need to fire the DC, cut Alex Smith, and then fire Mike Singletary.

You know Singletary oversees that defense and they just aren't getting it done. Worst in the league now. They look absolutely horrible from top to bottom.

They blew their wad on that NO game and now they realize the writing is on the wall. They are a bad football team.

The decision was arguably justified based on how the 49ers have played on offense and how inflexible they've appeared. It was also true, however, that Raye was directing the offense in the manner Singletary preferred.

When Raye was hired all niner faithful thought it was a bad hire but Singletary stated he needed someone that was not going to leave after one season, he wanted to establish continuity for a few years. That lasted a year and 3 games. I personally believe Raye is a part of the problem, he makes no adjustments, show no signs of being a capable OC, hell he doesn't even use the talents he has, but the problems definitely goes deeper than him.

As for Johnson, didn't we hear during the whole "rat" thing that he was being cut out of the game planning because of his staunch support for Nate Davis? I know I heard that somewhere...just sayin

They came first for the offensive coordinator, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't an offensive coordinator.

from what brief parts of the game I watched, I thought the issue was at RT and other parts of the OL. Looked to me like the protection broke down

So here's the rub .... what does this mean for the under performing Crabtree and even Vernon Davis?

Will Crabtree suddenly perform in double-coverage? Or should he be sold?

Davis is the security blanket, but (so far) not used like last year. Should he be sold as well?

The SF defense is as much a result of too many three and outs by the offense as by any confusion on the sideline. ANY defense will fall apart if they are on the field most of the game.

:lmao: I personally like Luck better, he seems more of a WCO guy though...do the niners still run that?

Yea I don't get why some people think that when an OC is fired mid-season that the playbook is set on fire and a new one brought in on Monday. That's not the case, some tweaks etc sure, but the scheme will remain largely the same. There is simply not enough time to introduce a new playbook/scheme.

:excited: Also this is a benefit for hiring someone within the organization as well. Yes he might call different plays in different situations but he will not introduce anything new, until at least the bye week and more likely the offseason.

It's the QB stupid.

That is the chief problem first and foremost. Alex Smith is a massive bust. As big as Russell. He can't get it done. Couple that with a defense that has been the biggest flop thus far of the NFL season and you have a disaster on your hands.

SF was supposed to be a ground and pound team with a stout defense. It has been quite the contrast. The New Orleans game had a major hangover on them this week.

But they have loads of talent. They are missing the field general to rally around and lead them on the field.

Raye deserved the boot.

He reminds me of the Raiders during their meltdown superbowl against the Bucs. Playbook was easily solved.

Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco and surely more outlets which will all claim to have gotten it first.

It’s not that there weren’t serious issues with Raye stemming from the Week 1 loss to Seattle and the Week 3 meltdown in Kansas City. It’s just that coach Mike Singletary told reporters in Kansas City the 49ers would hold off on making any changes and even said Raye would remain the offensive coordinator for the rest of the season.

Maiocco reported the Chiefs were calling out 49ers plays in advance based on formations. That being the case, it’s too bad Raye has left the building.
