49ers fire offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye (1 Viewer)

It's not an all or nothing proposition. Alex Smith was a big problem. Now he is gone. Raye was a problem. Now he is gone. Singletary is the festering head of these problems - the taciturn, but often bombastic mix of clueless and stubborn who brought Raye back and refused to bring in offseason QB competition for Alex - will be gone none too soon.

68 yards rushing against the worst rush defense in the NFL.6 sacks for a team that had 8 in their previous 9 games. No one able to get open down field.Alex Smith is definitely the problem in SF.

I don't think it was Singletary who refused to bring in offseason QB competition. The problem starts with ownership, and unfortunately, even after they fire Singletary they're still going to be around.

Post game press conference

Reporter: What about the fourth-and-4 where you decided to punt from the 33. What was the ...

Singletary: What point in the game? I'm trying to ...

Reporter: Second half, you had the ball on the Tampa Bay 33, instead of going for the field goal you punted.

Singletary (mistaking it for the Niners' decision to go for it on fourth-and-3 in the fourth quarter): I think at that time we felt like we had a play that, if we could pick it up, that's why we went for it obviously.

Reporter (or someone in press room): No, Mike ... when you punted.

Singletary: That's when we punted. I've got to ... I'm trying to figure out exactly ... Fourth-and-4 and we decided to punt?

Reporter: Right. First possession of third quarter.

Singletary: I think, obviously, I guess we felt we wanted to pin them back and maybe having a new kicker the thought process was how about we just go ahead and try to pin it on the defense.

Sad and confusing commentary from the festering head.

Once again, I'm not going to compare him to the best in the league, but it's hard for Smith to get the ball to his receivers if, the plays aren't called, he has no time to throw, and they are not open.

KC was dropping 8 into coverage and still on him in 2 seconds with a 3 man rush.
Who gave Jed York a Footballguys account? This is Smith's fifth year in the league. He's completed 56.7% of his passes for 6.0 yards/attempt, 39 TDs and 48 INTs. He's 16-27 as a starter, including 0-3 this year. And frankly, he just looks bad 80% of the time. He's had plenty of opportunities and he has yet to perform well. It's the receivers, it's the coach, it's the OC, it's the line...sorry, no. It's Alex Smith. He sucks.

Very :goodposting: Done. End the debate. Please.

Massive bust.

Even Trent Dilfer and Vinny Testeverde had marginally good seasons after SEVERAL chances. I still wouldn't want Smith as the linchpin of my franchise.
