"75 Hard" challenge (1 Viewer)

Is this even healthy to do? A gallon of water a day seems like a lot to drink.

I have a friend that just finished this on his 3rd try. I think he failed at like 60-something the last time. Seemed like he ended up punishing his body and life in a lot of ways to accomplish it, including a lot of days with less than ideal sleep to get the workouts in.

It’s been covered upthread. In short, a gallon is a lot, but probably Ok if you’re breaking a sweat with the 1.5 hr exercise. No idea if it’s actually healthy.

I also mentioned sleep deprivation ain’t healthy, but I’m writing this at ~4 am local time :bag:

1. Follow a structured diet. No alcohol or "cheat meals."
2. Complete two 45-minute workouts a day. One must be outside.
3. Drink a gallon of water.
4. Read 10 pages of a nonfiction, educational book. Audiobooks don’t count.
5. Take a progress picture.
1 So far following
2 Did two workouts this morning but not 45 minutes each. Will walk later
3 there’s water in coffee, right?
4 Ten pages done
5  Before pictures

Less than a day into this thing, and it's already teaching me lessons. First one is the importance of being intentional with your time. This morning I got up early to get ready for my run, and while I was sitting and letting my food settle, I spent a good 15-20 minutes on my phone scrolling through Twitter. Could've easily finished my 10 pages of reading in that time.

Sorry brother, it’s a hard no from me.

Maui is all the motivation I need.

As the pic says, I’m semi-hard

I’ll workout every day I can but don’t think I will get to 90 minutes much. I’ll drink a lot of water but a gallon is insane. I’ll try to do the reading. I’ve been limiting alcohol for a little while now and will continue (save vacations) but won’t go without the whole time. I’ll do weekly pics.

I’m adding - try and get in the sun each day for my mental health and try to meditate some during that time. Get 8 hours of sleep a night. Charge devices in another room and not use them an hour before sleep. Minimum 24 hour fast weekly.

I’ve got less than an hour left, and just barely finishing the water requirement. I intentionally worked out in the midday sun, to promote sweating, but I’m just not that thirsty

On the other hand, I wasn’t really hungry all day. One meal a day complements the obscene fluid intake.

Did this hike for my first exercise of the day (labeled by some as the “most dangerous hike on Oahu”), and walked around my neighborhood in the evening. Easy peasy.

Reading wasn’t that bad either.

And I took a before selfie.

Gotta pace the water better tomorrow.

I felt like I was drowning all day yesterday. Had the first half gallon done by 8ish and it was a push to get the rest down by 7.

Got up at 6 and knocked out the reading and first workout. Manual labor setting tile and general kitchen reno until about 6. It was pushing 7 until I drove home and unloaded tools. Healthy dinner followed by a walk at 8:30. That walk was actually hard after working all day. Strange how you can adapt to a manual task like painting and then you pivot to something like tile and all new muscles ache.

Headed out at 8 for another walk. Traveling today so I'm not looking forward to the gallon of water and having to stop to pee. Tomorrow I have a long race event that I haven't trained for

Semi-Hard 75:

Dubious start:
  • Water - did pretty good but I’m not aiming for a gallon. I’m planning to grade with a 0, .5, 1 for each category daily. I’m giving myself a .5 for water yesterday - 0.5
  • Eating - really good, strawberries and yogurt for lunch and chicken and rice Mexican meal for dinner; protein shake - 1
  • Reading - I forgot :bag: - 0
  • Workout 1 - 1
  • Workout 2 - 0. (I worked out with the wife but no where near 45 minutes) - 0
  • Alcohol - one whiskey - 0
  • Sleep - .5
  • Outdoor Sun and meditation - 1
  • No devices and charge elsewhere -0
  • Fasting will be Wednesday most likely - 0
I’ll move this to a Google sheet as to not bore you further. Overall a good day though minus the one whiskey during NBA Finals.

Forgot to mention that my evening walk did include leg day and by leg day I don't mean legs. Was bringing my foot down when I noticed either a water moccasin or garter snake was about to have a moment similar to Bryce Young meeting Aaron Donald. I exploded off the plant foot and hurdled it with ease tweaking my back in the process. In my mind it was a move Labron would be envious of, in reality it was Nurkic after 48 min straight.

3 mile run with walking warmup and cooldown got me one 45 minute workout. Now to give it all back at a brewery birthday dinner.
Last night was my wife’s Birthday.

I cooked dinner, scallops with blood orange sauce, farro and broccoli. She had a glass of wine.

I had more water 🤢

Dulce de leche B-day cake. I had a slice, but probably the only time in our relationship my wife ate more dessert than me.

With pescatarian OMAD as my diet goal, I still complied. Didn’t count the calories, though I’m sure I ran a deficit for the day.

Game night tonight. Gonna be a lot of snack temptations, and odd to be carrying a giant jug o’ water.

I scored 2 goals in a 6-3 win. Stuck around and subbed for a second game. Calves think that was a poor idea. Stupid pool doesn’t open until Monday, and it isn’t much fun to lay in the shower.

I think I had forgotten a gallon is 128 ounces - that’s A LOT of freaking water. And I drink several large cups a day.
If you're exercising 2x per day for 45 mins in summer a gallon of water per day really isn't that hard.
Disagree. After the first 3 days, exercising in the sun every day, drinking a gallon is far and away the hardest part of the challenge.

Hopefully it gets easier.

For me, I’ve had 3 good days so far but feel like I’m so far away from doing this challenge. I don’t get anywhere close on the water and I keep forgetting the reading. I will say as long as a 45 minute walk counts then I could see doing the workouts most days. And I can hit no alcohol for like 5-6 days a week but won’t pass up a bourbon while grilling or a rare beer at the pool.

I envy you. My 32 oz hydroflask is polished post workout before I even get to the shower. Then the re-fill doesn't last an hour after. That's half of the daily fill just around the outdoor workout.

Up at 4:45 for a trail race yesterday. Actually 3:45 the first time as the front desk didn't know the difference between a 3 and 4.

Picture - 5:00am
Ten pages reading - Printed out my reading material and read at the start line from 6:40 am to 6:55 am
Workout 1 - 9h45m trail run
Gallon of water - Drank 8 literss during at a minimum during the event probably closer to 10. It got up to 85 degrees and sunny. Drank another liter afterwards.
Eat healthy - Well I did gravitate to the watermelon and avocado wraps at the aid stations. Only dip into the chocolate once. Two snack bags of potato chips and one snack bag of gold fish. It was a cupless race meaning I didn't get to indulge in the soda or gatorade and stuck to water in the backpack. Skipped the after race treat meal and waited to I drove home to get Cava. I'm considering this a win and sticking to a healthy plan as consuming 200 cals per hour during an event is required to stay healthy.
Workout 2 - 10 pm, spun n the trainer for 25 minutes and then stretched for 20 minutes. Props to @gruecd for holding my feet to the fire here. Probably reduced the day after muscle soreness.

Very different story here. When I climb outside it’s an all-day event, typically from noonish until 6 or 7. Historically, I bring a liter of water to the crag. Even in our standard 85 degree tropical climate, I rarely finish it all. On other days I drink even less.

Yesterday I lugged the big jug up to the cliff. FWIW, it was the first day I finished drinking early. But I felt bloated most of the day, and pissed a half dozen times.

I don’t think there‘s any reason for envy me - I‘m a kidney stone waiting to happen. My wife hounds me to drink more water. Still, a gallon is ridiculous under normal circumstances.

And I thought finding a spot in the local park to piss was a PIA, pissing while climbing a cliff is next level.

Number 2 is an even bigger deal.

Going that distance under your own power, no matter the speed, is super impressive at your weight. Any weight, really.

Thanks, it was a challenge. That should be a 5 to 5.5 hour effort for me but I haven't been prioritizing myself over work and being lazy. Hopefully this challenge is the kick in the butt to make some changes.

La di da 😉
Awesome stuff my man!

Nice work Bass!

I’m going to have to learn to stretch better - calves haven’t recovered from Saturday yet. Walked 3 miles this morning instead of pickup soccer game and I’m going to either row or find a yoga workout this evening. Rest of it is going pretty well.

Kinda getting on a roll with this stuff. Up this morning at 4am, read my 10 pages while I was getting ready for my run, and out the door for my 10 miles at 5am. Got back, made a quick smoothie, and straight to the gym. 45-minute lift done, showered, and at the office by 8:30 with 48 ounces of water already consumed. I've got the rest of the day, and all I need to do is drink another 80 ounces of water. It really is all about being intentional with your time.

Next week I start a 15-week training cycle for the Berlin Marathon in September, so that'll add an interesting wrinkle to things.

Week 1 - Overcame some calf issue Sun-Tuesday - too much soccer on Saturday. Played Wednesday morning without issue. Week 2 looks well set up to continue without a hitch.
  • Weight - 199.9 - 193.1 - Down 6.8lbs
  • 13708 average steps, 14 workouts including golf, soccer, ERG.
  • Finished The Four Pillars of Investing - Started The Deficit Myth
  • Finished 128 oz of H20 before 5:30pm everyday
  • Salad everyday, replaced cream with unsweetened coconut milk in coffee, only coffee and water before noon.
  • Progress pic every morning
