7th Annual FFA Chess Tournament- Congratulations to Jagov and joffer, co-champions! (1 Viewer)

Have you guys ever heard of an en pessant? I hadn’t. At least I hadn’t until I thought I made an error and had only moved a pawn one space and it turns out I had moved it two but @Juxtatarot pulled some 15th century French move on me. Unfortunately for me, that move put him decisively ahead in pieces and in far better position.

En passant was one of the "magic" moves to me when I was learning chess back in the day. Castling as well. After learning all of the moves that the pieces could make, to then discover some new super hero stuff was cool. But that was long ago.

Today I have a Dutch Defense variation going against kutta. Doesn't seem that he is in any danger yet due to this.

I wondered if you knew about the rule when you made it.  If we were playing in real life I would have offered a take back but you can't really do that on the app.  To be honest, I think I probably had you a few moves earlier after the rook-knight exchange.  Very good game before all that though.

I don't disagree with the bold.  And no worries, it's a good way to learn about the move.

Mind blown.

Not yet - but I prefer playing against the traditional Queen's Gambit defenses. Tim played some weird variation against me too.

Fun game so far!

FYI: it looks like timmy is taking a 1-week vacation. If he gives me any new info, I'll pass it on here.
if true that's 2 weeks off in the last 3 weeks.  too bad as he loves this place.

I think my best playing was last night when I was high, next game I'm only making stoned moves.  Pretty sure my soberness is the reason I've lost all my games so far.
For what it's worth, I think it's quite plausible that you're more focused and engaged when high.  Especially in a slow game like we're playing.  I think I probably play about the same either way.

Match between kutta and Jagov is still underway. It looks like my Dutch Defense is starting to gain traction!

How exactly are the pairings set?  I see @shuke and I are the only two players to lose all four of our games -- are we going to get to play each other in one of the next two matches to determine the ultimate loser?

Yes, hopefully we'll play a game again someday. Thank you.
Thanks for the sportsmanship and the quick play.

I guess for the betterment of the tournament I can lay out what happened (Tim, I tried to email this to you directly to bring it to your attention). First, we made it a few moves before I realized we were playing the wrong colors. Wasn't a big deal though and we agreed to continue (note to Tim though that I was white and Freak Show was black). I posted it on here and Tim said to do whatever so doesn't seem like an issue here.

Both of us must have had a good portion of the day free as we played quickly (thanks Freak Show for that it's always nice to play that actively). We were probably about 20 moves in and each were only down a bishop. I'm probably not learned enough in the game to proffer an opinion on who had better position but we both seemed to be attacking opposite sides. I had set up an attack down the h file and was trying to entice or force the file to open. I moved a pawn up to g-4 and he took it from h-5. This allowed me to immediately advance my queen down to a protected spot for the check mate. Again, we were playing quickly so this all happened fast. After the mate I clicked on the "chat" to say good game or exchange in other pleasantries and saw that he has said his misclicked. I said "you did??" and he explained that he meant to retreat his knight from e-5 (instead of taking my pawn with his pawn). In looking at the board that did seem to be his safest/best play. I said that if we were playing on a physical set I'd be fine with a take back, but on the app the game was just over (I did screenshot the final layout just in case). Freak Show said good game, posted about it here, and was very gracious about it.
