80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

cant link from work , on a tinkle break from meeting.

1.18 Turning Japanese by The Vapors( probably slot them 1 hit wonders)

2.01 Big in Japan by Alphaville (could be non us/uk , guilty pleasure, synthpop )

I realize Big in Japan could have gone undrafted but I want to try to work a concept album take on things. School is in session
I like both Turning Japanese and Big In Japan. Both were on my list.

Good thing you got that one in the first.

I'll just go ahead and say it...Prince is quite possibly the most overrated artist ever.
70s Prince is good , real good. 80s , not for me.
70s Prince is two albums. You're really saying you only like Soft and Wet, I Wanna Be Your Lover, and I Feel For You?
Head is his best work
Head is off of Dirty Mind (1980), just like my pick.

Nice - FWIW, I had Big in Japan on my short list.

I don't get what's so controversial. People really don't know modern bands that are knock-offs of 80s bands?
I really can't think of many (any?).
Pick any 80s act like. Google the name of the act and the word "influenced". It isn't hard.

We've had huge acts influenced by MJ or Prince. We've had indie acts influenced by Joy Division, the Smiths, Gang of Four, whatever.
Just because they influenced them doesn't mean that they sound particularly like them. Not to my ears.

I'm sure I'll come up with some but off the top of my head, nobody really comes to mind.
I agree, there are very few songs post 2000 that sound like 80s songs to me - unless we are talking about bands that have survived the 80s, 90s, and are still producing music now.
By the way this whole conversation makes me want to spotlight like crazy and/or make a mixtape for the two of you, there is so much great stuff from the past few years that sounds like 80s music. The 80s production style "is back". Maybe not in mainstream rock music, but just below the surface in every genre there is tons of great, great 80s influenced music.

Well I'm just going to go then...

2.07 - Synchronicity II, The Police (Title Track)

I could put this song into "Ahead of Its Time" because in a decade of fun stuff like sex, drugs, and rock and roll, this song was angst before angst was cool.

Still love the imagery that Sting puts into his lyrics -

"He walks unhindered through the picket lines today,

He doesn't think to wonder why."

You know why? He's so unimportant that nobody cares he's breaking through the picket line.

You want to know how awesome this song is? Nobody has bothered to do a remake of it even though it's a hugely popular song.

One of the best songs ever

I took it in a tim draft last year, for "going insane" lyrics

Have fun settling this one. One of you should take Synchronicity I.

Guess I'll give it a minute

Me as well, didn't think it would be the first Alphaville song to go.
I was a huge fan of Alphaville in the 80's and couldn't get anyone to climb on board, now everyone jumps on...

Puff Daddy ruined Police remakes for everybody. This is why we can't have nice things.

Btw are we using US release or UK release dates for border songs? ..... 79/80 & 89/90?
I was gonna ask this as well.

Numerous ways to deal with this

1) - Stick with hard release dates of first country release

2) - When did it have it's peak chart activity?

3) - If it's on the border, it's in

I was messing with andy for picking so fast.

2.6: Ace of Spades- Motorhead (Metal/Hair)

I was never a metalhead... and this is probably the only song from that category I always just loved, so I'm picking it so I don't have to search later on for some song I never really cared about or heard of back then. Dated a girl in college who did a folksy cover of it
