80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

If Just Like Honey had not been picked, I would have picked Darklands as my "album name song." Darklands is my favorite JAMC album and the title track is among the 5 to 7 singles I'd pick if asked to pick a favorite (as are both HWIR and Head On).
Darklands is my favorite JAMC album too.

Love this song and most of the album. Looking back, Fleetwood Mac was one of my biggest missteps as a young music snob. At the time, I wrote them off as typical El Lay/You Kay corporate rock whores. I was totally wrong. Their 75-90s stuff has held up better than a lot of the trendy stuff I was listening to back then.
I was talking to Binky about them in the last draft. Christine McVie has returned to the band, and they already have a tour set. So far the closest they are going to be to me is DC or Atlanta. I saw them back in the 80s, and they were great. They are playing in your parts in November and December.

Here is what I have missing from the Doc up to the beginning of Round 16.

I will make mine in a couple...

16.2 -- Love Is Alright Tonight -- Rick Springfield (Pop!)

How good was pop in the 80s? An album like Working Class Dog, which has three near perfect pop songs (this one, Jessie's Girl, and I've Done Everything For You) never gets a sniff of albums of the 80s list. People gotta stop sleeping on Dr. Noah Drake.

16.8 - Power Of Love, Huey Lewis & The News (Movie/TV Theme)

It's funny that Back In Time probably fits the category more, but this is the song that people more associate with the movie, I think.

I really like HL&tN. I could pick quite a few songs of theirs for this draft.

"Okay, that's enough. Thank you, fellas. Hold it. Hold it, fellas. I'm afraid you're just too darn loud. Next, please. Bring up the next group, please.."

I am horrible with spreadsheets and just technology in general, so I have been afraid to poke around too much and update the spreadsheet. Found my notes, and a couple from yesterday are not accounted for:

Mötley Crüe - Smokin' in the Boys Room (cover song)

Poison - Look What the Cat Dragged In (title song)

As far as I can tell, as of last night I was caught up and just owe my 16th rounder this morning.

One of my ten all-time favorite '80s songs ... in the sense not of "the ten best songs recorded in the decade", but "the ten most infectious, fist-pumping, era-defining songs of the decade". Definitely would have been my #1 choice for Movie/TV theme song.

Andy beat me to it this morning. Was thinking about what I actually listened to in the 80s vs. what I listen to from their now. I wanted to have the main few bands that I liked back then represented somehow. So far I have gotten Maiden in there, and I think one other will be my wildcard, but Huey Lewis & the News has to be on my list. These were the first few albums that I had as a kid, and I played the hell out of them. Also had to get the Back to the Future soundtrack for those two songs. It was bad enough that when I got my first pets, two hamsters, that's right - I named them Huey and Lewis.

16.05: Huey Lewis & The News - If This Is It (soft rock)

Love it.

Always liked Huey , so good to see the love here. This isn't one of my favorite tunes of theirs, but one of those where a great video lifts the song.

Honestly, not one of my favs either, but still decent. Don't think any others I came up with I would have been able to shoehorn into the soft rock category.

Not quite what I thought my mix would look like when we started this (they rarely ever are), but here is what I have so far:

Tears for Fears - Mad World

Iron Maiden - The Trooper

NWA - Straight Outta Compton

Dinosaur Jr. - Sludgefeast

Oingo Boing - Weird Science

Bananarama - Cruel Summer

Black Flag - Depression

King Missile - WW3 Is a Giant Ice Cream Cone

Faith No More - We Care A lot

Gary Numan - Cars

Wham! - I'm Your Man

Madonna - Into the Groove

Living Colour - Cult of Personality

Motley Crue - Smokin' in the Boys Room

Poison - Look What the Cat Dragged In

Huey Lewis & the News - If This Is It

Not digging very deep, but it'll play. Trying to find another weird/funny song that might be better, but we will see.

Also, for extra credit, I have been working on a longer playlist of all metal/hair metal songs that were my extras for the 1st song off debut and title song categories. If anybody else is interested, I could link it at the end of the draft too.

Looks like I need to free up Dec. 12th.

Oh yeah. :hey:

I'm hoping that everyone provides a list of their cheat sheet when this is done. Or even just posts one or more additional lists based on our structure here.

Non US/UK Band - Magic Power, Triumph

In that vein, I really want to use:

Out of Time Man

For my Wannabe 80s. I think it fits in nicely with Golden Brown, Blister In the Sun, and Touch of Grey. But, it is a cover (it would be my 3rd) of a 1991 song (too close IMO to the decade in which we are drafting from).

Instead

16.3 Daylight - Matt & Kim - Wannabe 80s

####, I was doing the same thing, except just 1st off first... I'm at 33

I feel no guilt for loving this song (or any song for that matter), but some may hate it or not give it the time of day, plus it's country. This is Johnny's daughter.

16.18 - Seven Year Ache - Rosanne Cash (guilty pleasure)

12.15 was Upside Down by Diana Ross.

Looks like I missed round 14. Pick coming in a sec.

On the topic of extra playlists, I'll be posting one of songs from the past few years that are 80s inspired, since some people don't know they exist... On that note:

16.13 - "Daniel" - Bat for Lashes (Wannabee 80s)

I'm throwing back Quarterflash, sorry sexy sax lady, it just doesn't work in my mix or possibly any mix. I need something a little hoppier, like

Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Yx0X-eHn8

This may not work for soft rock, but I can shuffle a few things around and make it fit. Probably move Marley

Interesting, purely coincidental factoid.. both Nu Shooz and Quarterflash were husband-wife teams from Portland

I just went and fixed all my cats.

Marley goes to soft rock

MARRS goes to one-hit

Soft Cell goes to UK #1

Falco goes to non-US/UK

Nu Shooz goes to Dance

whew!

16.15 Welcome to the Boomtown - David + David (First song off first only album)

There's been a lot of nostalgia in this thread but the 80s were also a very scary time. This song captures the slick artifice and the rotten core that exemplified the era.
