80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (2 Viewers)

All right, let's stop with the controversial stuff and just get back to some core 80's shlockiness...

6.8 - Live Wire, Mötley Crüe (1st Song/1st Album)

The Crüe have another song that ranks higher on my all time favorites list, but probably won't fit into this draft. But with this song...talk about "bursting onto the scene"!

Trying to find a suitable name, Mars remembered an incident which occurred when he was playing with a band called White Horse, when one of the other band members called the group "a motley looking crew." He had remembered the phrase and later copied it down as Mottley Cru. After modifying the spelling slightly, "Mötley Crüe" was eventually selected as the band's name, with the stylistic decision suggested by Neil to add the two sets of metal umlauts supposedly inspired by the German beer Löwenbräu, which the members were drinking at the time.
Turn it up!!! :headbang:
Nice, this was my plan B for that cat..

I'm back in the real world. Surprisingly Verizon was able to get out this morning without me having to yell and scream at them. Had to have the little box where the cable comes in that was located in the garage replaced. Turns out it was shorted yesterday when my power went out, and ran on the battery for a couple hours. Easy fix! Unfortunately I couldn't get him to have one of the gigabit routers 'fall off his truck.' Oh well!

NZ I can help with the Google Doc today if you need me. Let me know.

Yeah, also on the radar for me. Love that schlocky video, too.

"The video was directed by the members of Mötley Crüe. It showcases the band's stage theatrics, such as Nikki Sixx setting himself on fire (due to lack of money to perform on stage pyrotechnics) and Mick Mars drooling blood. "

In no way, shape or form did they copy Kiss on those theatrics.

If Chaos Commish was going to take this, I'll toss it back for pulling an Andy.

6.6: Sophisticated #####- Public Enemy (Rap)

Yo Bum Rush the Show was everywhere when it came out (at least in NYC and Milan where I lived that year)- thumping out of Oldsmobiles, radio and this song in particular in the clubs. Not as much Flav in this one- for better or worse.
I was a little disappointed by how little PE is on Spotify.

In the suburbs, PE didn't break until It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back, but that album rocked my world as a 16 year old kid.

About two years ago, I was visiting my parents and found they still had the cassette in "my room." I was kind of amazed that I could put it on and still know Rebel Without a Pause word for word. Nothing like a forty-year old balding guy spitting hot rhymes in his childhood bedroom.
I did the same about a month ago. WORD FOR WORD.
I'm imagining you guys looking like Albert Brooks rocking out in his old room when his mom walks in on him in "Mother".

Didn't everyone copy the New York Dolls?
In terms of the glam look, I'd say so. But Kiss was really the one to kick it up a notch with the theatrics/pyrotechnics.

Nobody is going to argue with Hall & Oates as R&B. They're a Philly soul band.

On a related note, I still laugh every time my wife refers to "Live at Daryl's House" as "**** You, Oates."

Not sure how we're defining one-hit wonder, but going with the typical usage of only one US Billboard Top 40 song. So this works...

6.14 Saga - "On The Loose" (one hit wonder)
Scratch another one off the list.

Awesome song.

Edit: Hey, I think I had that same shirt he's wearing with the cutoff sleeves/collar and Japanese writing.

We were talking at trivia about how well most of their stuff still holds up, I think "Kiss On My List" was a clue

Yeah, I've long been on the boat on the stuff that was considered the "pure" R&B before the 80s pop. Like She's Gone or Rich Girl. But I was considering Maneater for my guilty pleasure before realizing that I feel absolutely no guilt about liking Maneater. It's fun.

I dig Daryl Halls voice. Really underrated, IMO.
Love the "Live from Daryl's House" show. It's on Palladia, in addition to the shows being on the site.

Daryl Hall started Live From Daryl’s House, the free monthly web show in late 2007, after having the idea of “playing with my friends and putting it up on the Internet,” and the show has since garnered acclaim from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Daily Variety, CNN, BBC, Yahoo! Music and influential blogger Bob Lefsetz, who have cited Live From Daryl’s House as a perfect example of a veteran artist reinventing himself in the digital age by collaborating with both established colleagues and newer performers.

Past episodes of Live from Daryl’s House have featured a mix of well-known performers like Smokey Robinson, The Doors’ Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, Nick Lowe, K.T. Tunstall, Todd Rundgren, Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, Finger Eleven’s James Black and Rick Jackett, the Bacon Brothers and country star Jimmy Wayne, along with newcomers such as Philly soul singer Mutlu, Canadian techno-rockers Chromeo, MySpace pop-rock phenom Eric Hutchinson, Cash Money rocker Kevin Rudolf, Wind-up Records’ Chicago rockers Company of Thieves, Bay Area singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson, Charlottesville, VA’s rising Parachute, Chicago rock band Plain White T’s and highly touted tunesmith Diane Birch.

Even Out of Touch was a great pop tune. Love Hall & Oates.

All these years later the one song of theirs that's really held up and risen toward the top a bit IMO, much like INXS's Don't Change, is You Make My Dreams Come True

This convo's spotlight city, I know, but I think it's OK once a seal is broken on an artist..

Catchy as heck. I hope it gets picked by someone.

I performed a triumphant karaoke rendition of Out of Touch with my translator in Tapei a few years ago. Great fun.

Walk into my room , ask me jerky questions , don't mean what you say , Imaculate Protection…

5.19 Academy Fight Song by Mission of Burma (Indie/Alt)

Love Mission of Burma and this song hits home to me. Still get a thrill hearing this song today , reminds me of my days at Malden Catholic

6.01 My Ever Changing Moods by The Style Council (Pop)

Huge Weller fan . The Jam/StyleCouncil/Weller might be my favorite artist. I get a hoot grocery shopping and hearing this song or You're the Best Thing as background music.

That sounds like it was even funnier than when I dressed up as David Lee Roth (complete with blonde wig and tiger striped spandex track pants) and lip synced on stage to (songs to be named later) at my high school's Battle Of The Bands concert.

No defense needed for Whitesnake.

Unless you select the version of Here I Go Again where he sings "hobo" instead of "drifter." Hobo generally doesn't work in a song unless you're Roger Miller.

Could be a good category. Songs that mention hobo.

ETA - I'm wrong about 70's, that was 82
