______ Passed Away Today, RIP (1 Viewer)

5 years ago, 95-year-old Jimmy Carter fell at home and suffered a black eye and 14 stitches. And still showed up for work the next day for a Habitat For Humanity house project. Rock on, Mr. President. Rest In Peace.

Great picture here:

I remember that.

This is my favorite photo of President Carter. That's Menachem Begin on the left (Carter's right), Anwar Sadat and Moshe Dayan on the right.

The Camp David Accords, which were being held in secret with no press coverage, were at a stalemate. Carter had visited Gettysburg that summer with his family, and invited both negotiating teams to take an afternoon off to visit the National Military Park.

The visit had profound impact on both the Israeli and Egyptian leaders. Realizing the United States had been forged by their own Civil War 85 years after they declared independence caused them to rethink their intransigeant positions. A few days later, Egypt conceded the West Bank and Israel gave up settlements in the Sinai peninsula, and the Camp David Accords were publicly announced.

Begin and Sadat would share the Nobel Peace Prize at years end.

President Carter was a good man, in so many humble and selfless ways. I do recall the general malaise of the post-Vietnam, post-Watergate era, and the Iranian Hostage crisis was a daily reminder of how weak the country had become. I don't consider him to be a good President. But there are few I admire more, because I love so much of what he stood for, and his quiet determination to always try to do the right thing.

Warren "Red" Upton, last survivor of Pearl Harbor and the USS Utah, died at 105 today.

...and the Greatest Generation is gone.
RIP
But they are not all gone yet. There are around 15 survivors of Pearl Harbor still alive.
I was going by this article. What survivors are you talking about - civilians?

He was the oldest living survivor, not the only.

From your article: With his death, there are 15 survivors of Pearl Harbor that are known to still be alive, Farley said, adding there were 87,000 military personnel on Oahu on the day of the attack.

It also said he was the last survivor from the Utah.

Decent (and feisty) player probably most known for two plays:
I also read that he was the Mets player at-bat when NYC got hit with a massive blackout, and Shea Stadium went instantly dark.
Yes - confirmed by Lenny himself (1:13 mark of the below video).

Another clip:

Did he actually die? Not finding anything on it.

Did [Randle] actually die? Not finding anything on it.
Seems like major national sites aren’t covering Randle’s passing, but there are plenty of local sources.

Right - he wasn’t exactly a household name except among ‘70s baseball diehards, so not surprised his death is not as publicized as other players.

Well now it's everywhere. Just wondered yesterday because all I found was a couple of tweets from unknowns.
He only had a short career with the Mets but was one of my favorites at the time...RIP

Perfect time to share the break dancing cold close from a 1984 episode of Alice. Rerun (yes, THAT Rerun) and a couple of guys from Breakin' 2 tear up Mel's Diner. Mel joins in doing The Wave, and Alice & Vera cut a rug with the young guys toward the end.

Alice in syndication kept me company through many 1980s afternoons. Years later, when I used to work nights, I'd come home and find Nick at Nite was running Alice at like 3 a.m. Didn't mind settling in for an episode or two before bed. RIP Ms. Lavin, Fred "Rerun" Berry, Vic "Mel Sharples" Tayback, and Beth "Vera" Howland.

Something similar happened even with Rickey Henderson's passing -- there were several hours between Dave Winfield's tweet announcing Henderson's death and major-source corroboration. Higher-profile sources held back on reporting until they could independently verify (ended up being the New York Post, no doubt through a NY Yankees grapevine). I think many outlets are shy to report deaths early after some high-profile social-media fake reports in recent years.

That blackout was on my 13th birthday. That was a pretty scary night, you could smell fires all over. The power was out well into the next day.

Nice - don’t remember that episode although I probably stopped watching the show by then. Good to see Rerun still rocking that same leg slap/kick move he did a thousand times on What’s Happening.

my favorite fashion trend was the break dancers wearing a raccoon or rabbits tail attached to the pants. really, nothing says rebel like a raccoon tail on your parachute pants.

To be fair, onion on the belt was already taken

Wayne Osmond dead @ 73

RIP
were they effectively the first "boy band" ? They all played instruments though so this may not fit
They were starting out the same time as the Jackson 5. Both brother acts with choreography.
First boy band was probably The Monkees. They were cast for their "look" and at first some of them couldn't play their instruments.

Nope. They were 21 to 24 when the band formed.

They all had music careers prior to The Monkees.
