______ Passed Away Today, RIP (1 Viewer)

Her Mrs. Iselin (The Manchurian Candidate) should be on any shortlist of the very best performances put on film. Absolutely terrifying. And she was only two years older than Leslie Howard at the time.
It really speaks to her longevity that as long ago as The Manchurian Candidate came out (60 years ago), her first Oscar nomination was almost 20 years before that (for Gaslight in 1944 — nominated when she was 18).

(And Leslie Howard was well dead by then; I think you mean Laurence Harvey).

Angela Lansbury had influence in the casting of guest-stars on Murder She Wrote, and she had a knack for recommending young actors with potential: George Clooney, Bryan Cranston, Bill Maher and Amy Brenneman all got early roles on her show. A lot of other names, too.

She also went out of her way to cast actors of her generation who had fallen off the radar and were at risk of losing their health insurance, so the screen credit would keep their union membership active: Joey Bishop, Turhan Bey, Vivian Blaine, Foster Brooks, and many others.

I have found memories of staying over at my grandparents' house on Saturday nights and Murder She Wrote would be on in the background. RIP.

Jules Bass director, producer of the iconic holiday shows Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Fun story: when my oldest was 3, we were watching Rudolph, and she asked the name of Yukon Cornelius. Upon hearing the word “Yukon,” she got a puzzled look on her face, and after a moment, responded “I not Kon!” It’s now a running joke whenever we hear it, and she still finds it funny.

You should razz her when she gets mad and call it the Rath of Kahn

I might just do that. Right now, whenever one of us is mad, I’ll sometimes grab a towel, drape it around them like a cape, and say, “Now you’re Super Mad!”

Ok, back to the original topic, Jules Bass had a lot of videos that are a huge part of my Christmas festivities. He certainly had a particular style.

NGL, you could have given me 3 "alive or dead" guesses about him and I would have gotten them all wrong.
Surprising he lived this long given how wild he lived. For example he once showed up at Graceland with a loaded gun and tried to kill Elvis.

His live album, “Live at the Star Club, Hamburg” is one of the best live rock albums ever recorded.

Some of the reviews are awesome:

It’s not an album, it's a crime scene

An unbelievably seismic document of rock 'n' roll so demonic and primal it can barely keep its stage suit on.... It's up there with James Brown's great live albums.

the purest, hardest rock & roll ever committed to record...He sounds possessed, hitting the keys so hard it sounds like they'll break, and rocking harder than anybody had before or since. Compared to this, thrash metal sounds tame, the Stooges sound constrained, hardcore punk seems neutered, and the Sex Pistols sound like wimps.

oh, wow - rock n roll royalty

saw him live in Rome, Italy, 1988. he was part of this legendary lineup:
  • Bo Diddley
  • Ray Charles
  • Fats Domino
  • James Brown
  • Little Richard
  • BB King
Chuck Berry was supposed to be part of the tour, but insisted on being the headline/closer every night lol. Anyway, at the time I was a bit indifferent about going to the show. I was 25ish, stationed overseas, and it was a chance to reminisce about American culture - bu all these guys were a generation + before me. But in retrospect I was lucky I got to see all of them while they were (relatively) young.

It’s hard to standout on that kind of tour but the JLL set was amazing. Dude knew how to bring the energy. Seriously felt like he was pouring every ounce of himself into the show, it was intense.

That’s the most incredible lineup. I would kill to have see all of them.

The Politics Forum...it was a good run. RIP
Was it really a good run though? For the best. I could only stand going there for a month at a time before I had to leave it alone for 4-6 months.

Yeah for the most part it was a cesspool. Difficult to engage in reasoned discussion bc so many resorted to tribalism. Really brought out the worst in some people.

Won’t miss it, plenty of other places to keep up on current events.
