______ Passed Away Today, RIP (6 Viewers)

Aww, man. I was a Bullets fan, but loved when he and Wes Unseld would clash. When those two went after a rebound, women/children/animals/other players would run away to save themselves.
Sad to hear this news.

I'm a lifelong Sonics fan. I attended both the home games of that '79 Championship series. Paul Silas was a key cog for that scrappy team.

R.I.P.

Jet Black, drummer for The Stranglers died at age 84. The band got lumped in with Punk chronologically but they were always more musically adventurous than playing three chords really fast.

Just do the math. Jet Black was 39 when Punk took off. They definitely Arrived at an odd time.
Even the youngest member and driving force of the band, bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel was about 10 years older than the Sex Pistols.
With Dave Greenfield dying of Covid, only Hugh Cornwall and JJB left. Although JJB still tours with a rag tag bunch under the name.

Stranglers gigs may have been the biggest sausage fest of any gig attended. Even more than heavy metal ones. Their misogyny and rampant sexism were either a throwback or unfortunately too early.

RIP to the maninblack. Im gonna crank up Peaches, Bitching, Bring on the Nubiles and London Lady. Then have a good wash to cleanse the filth off of me.

Composer Angelo Badalamenti died at age 85. He's best known for his musical scores of David Lynch films and won a Grammy award for the Twin Peaks theme. He also had a long career as a composer and arranger of Jazz and Pop songs including a lovely collaboratiive album with James singer Tim Booth under the name of Booth and the Bad Angel.

I care less about celebrities and athletes than any person I know. Literally do not care at all.

But losing Mike Leach stings.

I think because I never really saw him as a celebrity. I saw him as someone I admired. He was fun and authentic and led people well.

I think it’s something about Random Shots. That goofy column is actually sort of a serious look into how I see the world, specifically through the lens of football and sports.

I play it off like it’s no big deal, but it’s a big deal to me.

And if one person could personify Random Shots, it’s Mike Leach.

I’ve probably featured him more than any other person over the years.

Rock on, Coach. You will be missed.

Stuart Margolin, two time Emmy award winning actor, dead at 82. You might know him as Angel Martin from the Rockford Files, or from his numerous other appearances in shows like Love, American Style, The Partridge Family, or The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
RIP.
I definitely remember him from Rockford of course but can’t recall his character on MTM.

He appeared in one episode as an overzealous suitor for Mary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aay6n9f-5fU

He also dabbled in songwriting, and a couple of his songs would have appeared in my still-unpublished epic, The Next 1000 Songs Of 1969.

"Day After Day (It's Slippin' Away)" was a minor hit for a group called Shango.

tWitch. SYTYCD star and DJ on Ellen. My daughters are both dancers and this one hurts. Has young children and a beautfiul wife. I actually met him once. Suicide.

RIP Stephen.

I had no idea the Ellen show wasn't on any more.
Without turning this political she got "mob cancelled" for a hostile work environment allegedly..... So she decided to retire end of this season.

That is my opinion on how the situation played out

Interesting - I won’t ask for details as I’m sure that could be political but surprises me given who she is and being a minority. I’ll look it up.

Oooor her ratings tanked. I’m sure rumors of her being a massive jerk didn’t help.

Also, Ellen is a minority?

I had no idea so many men watched it. Don’t mean that in a disparaging way, just surprised how so many people know him. Personally I never heard of him but it’s an obviously sad story.

And some one experiencing from clinical depression doesn’t necessarily have to appear sad or distraught all the time. They can seem “happy”.

WOW ... this one is shocking

I've seen him on numerous shows , recently on Kevin harts game show and seemed very happy
My mom wil be crushed. That is shocking.

I just emailed my mom with the news, too. She's going to be upset. We both loved him on So You Think You Can Dance.

There’s a lot of people that embarrass themselves about their understanding of mental health issues all the time on these boards. It’s amazing how some people seem stuck in the 1950s.

Whatever you were going for, this ain't it, chief.

I mean speaking for Neanderthals, you can break it down into a million pieces but after you’ve figured out why, what trauma caused it, the physiology of it all, you will still end up at the end result which is the only solution is to persevere.
I'm just saying it's easy to say "you gotta find help for yourself" or list the responsibilities that he/she walked away from by committing suicide - but the reality is someone suffering from depression or other mental health issues don't see anything that can "help" and/or aren't always in a state to seek that help. Also things like "he seemed so happy" doesn't mean a thing. That's just not how it works.

I do apologize for perhaps being a bit harsh with my statement - but I've just seen so much ignorance on that topic (and it's a highly personal topic for me). I'm of the opinion that those that are clueless on a subject shouldn't be the ones shouting the loudest.

We agree GB. Very personal for me too. So sorry for your pain. I think your last statement should go without saying.

Rock on, Coach. You will be missed.

He was my favorite character in sports and I'd been working diligently on my Mike Leach impersonation the last few years. Just a colorful personality in a profession full of trite clichés and rehearsed sound bytes. Leach was an avid reader; when he did appearances on a local radio show here, the host would always ask him what he was reading and I loved that. He once taught a class on insurgent warfare. Co-wrote a book on Geronimo. He self-taught himself the game of football after injuries robbed him of playing in college. He would sit in on meetings at BYU and pick the brains of guys like Jim McMahon and Steve Young. He was tops in his law class at Pepperdine but never wanted to be an attorney.

And, well....there is this. Right before he passed away. And I'm not crying, you're crying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goKOLTOvCk0

I was concerned that it might have happened where his kids could see it. I'm very grateful he went to a hotel, so they wouldn't find him or see him like that.

This one really hurts.

RIP boxing referee Steve Smoger who was the third man in the ring for over 200 title fights.
