Real name Salomão Borges Filho, the musician was born in 1952, in Belo Horizonte. Making music with friends, the ad hoc group of youngsters would gather in their neighbourhood – their “corner club,” as it came to be known, blended MPB (
música popular brasileira) with emerging sounds of jazz, pop, rock, and Beatles-esque baroque flourishes.
Released in 1972, ‘Clube da Esquina’ became one of the cornerstone’s of modern Brazilian music; it’s inherent freedom acting in opposition to the ruling junta, speaking eloquently to the country’s disaffected youth while retaining a beautiful musical lexicon.
Lô Borges then released a string of solo records, achieving international recognition in the process. Working prolifically, his star dimmed in the late 90s, before finding a late-career hit in 2003 with ‘
