A 7 year old brought a gun to my kid's school yesterday (1 Viewer)

The child who took the gun to the North End school reported it had been in a top drawer in his uncle’s bedroom and he’d put it in his backpack, according to Ernster. It wasn’t clear whether the relative lives at the same home as the boy or how long the child had the gun.
thanks- people want the parents' heads... but could be anybody nearby with an "easily" accessible gun.

Too late:

He handed it off to two other students before one — an 8-year-old — pulled the trigger
Its the supplier that you need to get rid of.   Its more than just the present state of the kid.   Its a pretty clear reflection of the type of home environment that he's in. If this is how he is in 1st grade, he's going to be a real treat come the later grades.

jfc.

glad everybody's alright. hopefully will get to the bottom of this and punish the gun-owner(s) for being so idiotic.
:goodposting:

These parents should have their guns taken away and prohibited from owning guns in future.    Friggin' idiots

Gun ownership is a right but it's also a MASSIVE responsibility. If you choose to have guns in the house with children, you MUST have proper security in place to prevent them from getting into kids hands. This is horrible. So glad nobody's hurt.

doesn't sound like it was the parents... but same goes for anybody with a gun.

my wife once asked me why i was shopping for claymores.  "isn't that a little overkill?" she asked.

"exactly," i said.

I am sorry for joking. I am glad nobody was hurt.

Serious response. Whoever screwed up knows it.   Not sure there's a scalp worth taking. Seems fair to have expected a notification a bit earlier, but it's tough to beat social media.

City councilperson heard from police shortly after incident. She waited on the info a bit, hoping that official word would come from the school. As of 1030 there was nothing, so she posted in our neighborhood Facebook page about the incident. Only posted limited details for that was all she had
  I don't fault the school here.  They can't control some outside party sharing details received from the police.  While it may not have been the optimal time frame, I imagine there was some degree of chaos going on in the school, and I give them the benefit of the doubt for dealing with the situation internally before sending a less than optimal communication that could potentially cause more confusion and panic.

Full disclosure, wife is a principal and we had a moronic parent complaint about communication exactly yesterday, so I'm a little biased.

Yea, I don't have too much of a problem with the timing. 3.5 hours seems a bit excessive, but I agree they need to deal internally before worrying too much about getting word out.

Update

- a 7-year old brought the gun, passed it around some friends, and an 8-year old pulled the trigger

- kid got the gun from a top drawer in a bedroom

- kid lives with his uncle and aunt...maybe some other parental issues here?

- it was an optional school day for students who want or need extra work.

- state and local laws dictate a 1-year expulsion, but the local school can decide against it

yea, the optional school thing is because of the year round nature of the program. typically go 9 weeks, then 3 weeks off throughout the year.

and its not really for students who need extra work, as much as it is for students that have nowhere to go during a random 3 weeks in November.

my kid would be there, but my folks are retired and sold their house in Boston and are out visiting for the month.

Any more news from the school, moops?
Nothing new from the school. I keep waiting for something, but I am not sure exactly what they can tell us at this time, or what I am expecting to hear.

School continued on as is yesterday. I will see my kids teacher this weekend so I am hoping to glean some more info from her. My kiddo doesn't go back to school until after the Thanksgiving weekend, so it will be mostly blown over by then.

We had a conversation with him about this. Or as much a conversation you can have with a 5 year old about serious #### like kids bringing a gun to school. Mostly just telling him to tell any adult if someone does something like this, etc. He seems unfazed, which is expected, cause he is ####### 5 years old and shouldn't have to deal with this bull####.

I guess this is the world/country we live in- guns are accepted and encouraged... debating having the same talk with our 9 yo, but not happy at even having to have the internal debate.

having mixed feelings about the kid who brought it in. I'm generally with you about the kid just being a kid- wanted to impress some friends and likely idiotically ignorant about the potential consequences. I suppose if this IS the world we live in- we can't afford to have kids that idiotically ignorant about guns... that handling them on their own, without adult supervision or approval is categorically a non-starter. that bringing them anywhere where there are other kids is categorically a non-starter- especially school. that allowing anyone else to handle them can't ever happen, without parental guidance and approval. kids are naive and make poor choices- but being naive and making poor choices with a gun is potentially lethal... and should be punished severely so the naive and idiotic kid understands the terrible severity of their poor choices.
