Bryant wins starting WR spot

Antonio Bryant spent the NFL season last year on his couch. But he will begin the regular season Sunday in New Orleans in the Bucs' starting lineup opposite Joey Galloway.

Bryant, 27, has been a playmaker in the past. He compiled 1,009 receiving yards in 2005 but had some well-documented run-ins with Bill Parcells in Dallas and Mike Nolan in San Francisco. He was suspended for two games at the end of the 2006 season and two at the beginning of 2007, stemming from DUI charges and resisting arrest.

Bryant had been nursing a swollen knee and did not play in the final two preseason games. But he brings an element of more speed and play-making ability.

"He's going to be out there with Joey,' receiver Ike Hilliard said. "That's the decision coach (Jon) Gruden made. He's obviously a guy we're looking forward to taking our offense to another level.''

Sep 1 Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Bryant (knee) has fluid build-up in his knee and could miss the season opener. Bryant has missed the last two weeks of workouts.

Aug 24 Bryant (sore knee) did not play in Saturday's Buccaneers-Jaguars game.

Recommendation: Bryant had his knee drained earlier in the week due to swelling, and wasn't quite ready to play Saturday. He's still had the best preseason of all Bucs wideouts so far, and he appears likely to make the roster in some capacity.

How many of those 64 have had a 1,000 yard season, and are still in the prime age range? Hes got physical ability, hes got concentration and personal problems. But he put up 69/1009/14.6/4 with Trent Dilfer and Charlie Frye "throwing" him the ball. Hes had over 700 yards 4/5 years hes played in the NFL.

I have a mason dixon line of somewhere around Teddy Ginn for guys that I would want on my team, and then getting into projects...I can't see Bryant being a better option than any of those guys. If Galloway were injured and there was nothing but Bryant, maybe OK...but what is the WR2 in Tampa Bay going to produce?I'm trying to be open minded about it, but I really have a hard time with him int he top50 for NFL starting WRs...I jsut think if he were that good he would ahve been on a roster last season. And since when did mental toughness not count? Marvin Harrison wasn't the most gifted WR but he was focused and applied himself, and I think we all saw the results. I'm not putting harrison down who I have a lot of respect for but he doesn't have the tools of a Randy Moss, still both seem to get the job done. back on topic...what is so great about Bryant? FWIW last year the TB #2 WR Ike Hilliard put up 62/722/1. What is debatable is whether or not Galloway gives up some of his 57/1014/6, and if Bryant could do more with those 62 catches Hilliard got.

i'm in a big league, i took a flyer on him a few weeks ago. With Galloway's groin and age, and Ike H. just cant be the answer, i'll see what Bryant can do. He's the WR5 on my squad, so no loss if he does nothing.

Won the Biletnikoff award for the nations top receiver in his sophomore year at Pitt. He is a physical specimen.Like Cris Carter, maybe he can put together his life enough to be a productive NFL starter. He's in a great situation to put up numbers in a Tampa Bay offense that will throw the ball, has a veteran QB, and a lack of impact wide receivers.I'm not sure why he hasn't received more hype to be honest. Maybe because he has burned many in the FF community. I haven't been burned by him yet, and see a major opportunity for a thousand yard season. Not bad for a guy who's being drafted at the end of drafts (or not at all).

At the same time, the wide receiver position has a high turnover rate each year. The Bobby Engrams/Kevin Curtis's that begin the year being compared to David Boston, that end up top 30, despite the naysayers coming out every week saying that there is no way they can keep up their pace. Antonio Bryant has talent, Gruden likes him & likes to throw the ball, Gruden has shown the willingness to give players second chances. The Tampa receiver corps has been begging for someone to take over the reigns for Galloway for several years. As long as Bryants knee injury is not to serious, he will be on a roster in every fantasy league by midyear, and he is currently not owned in many leagues. The definition of value, and the Biletnikoff award shows the upside.

A Job for Many

Sep 03, 2008 - It's likely that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will elect to start Joey Galloway at one of their two wide receiver spots in the season opener Sunday in New Orleans. However, the team still hasn't chosen Galloway's running mate.

Four players still seem like strong candidates: last year's starter, Ike Hilliard; former starter Michael Clayton; promising third-year man Maurice Stovall and 2008 free agent acquisition Antonio Bryant. However, here's a possibility that few have considered for the other starting spot:

Nobody.

Or perhaps Hilliard and Bryant, or Clayton and Stovall. While Tampa Bay's depth chart still lists Hilliard in that spot, it's quite possible that the Bucs will find a way to work all of their receivers into the game plan, and if that's the case then the actual "starter(s)" could depend on what play comes up first on the game plan.

Head Coach Jon Gruden pointed that fact out on Wednesday after insisting that the team still has not locked in on a definite starter at flanker.

"We're going to look at how the week goes, to be honest with you," said Gruden. "We've had a number of guys that have been inactive. I expect a lot of guys to participate. Who the starter is depends on the personnel that we're in, the play that we decide to choose. But we've got some candidates that are pretty good football players."

The Buccaneers arrived at this position after a training camp in which the receivers performed quite well across the board. There are pretty obvious strong points to all of the candidates, which leaves the Bucs facing a pleasant problem. Hilliard is ultra-dependable, an excellent route-runner and always a favorite target on third downs. Clayton continues to show signs that he can recapture his 80-catch rookie season form. Stovall's combination of size and athleticism make him an always-intriguing figure in the offense. And Bryant has proven that he still possesses the skills that made him a 1,000-yard receiver in Cleveland just three years ago.

Perhaps, then, the ultimate solution will be to find a way to get everyone involved and keep the depth chart from becoming too important.

Rumors swirled around the team on Wednesday that Bryant would be the starter opposite Galloway, but Gruden said after practice that he is not simply being evasive in waiting to make an announcement.

"Yes, [bryant]'s a possibility," said Gruden. "He missed the last couple weeks with an injury. I've just got to see how things go here in the next couple days. Antonio, if healthy, he should play for us. And if Joey's healthy, you'd be foolish to take him off the field. But I can only update you here in the next couple days."
