A "First Round Talent" has failed a drug test (1 Viewer)

Has anyone heard anything about this?

A couple of things that rang clear to me this week that influenced my mock draft were: Vince Young has done a nice job on his visits around the league. One coach said, 'I was expecting to meet a Michael Vick kind of guy and felt more like I sat down with Donovan McNabb'. Two defensive coaches weighed in on Manny Lawson and described him as a cross between Jason Taylor and Jevon Kearse. Both of those veteran players entered the NFL under 240 pounds. Lawson has weighed anywhere from 241 at the Combine to 233 on his visits. Two players, who I will not mention, have apparently failed a drug test and will not be top choices next week. Unfortunately, one of those players is a clear-cut first-round talent.

AJ Hawk!  I bet my life on it!
he was going to bust anyway, being white and from the big ten and all.thanks for the tip lhucks!
It has to be him. He has that long-hippie like hair. No doubt AJ Hawk got caught smoking the doobie. I suspect the first thing he buys with his rookie contract is a van.

I can't find a clue in that mock.

NFL should allow one franchise to have hopped up players, and if you fail a drug test you have to go play there. They could be called the Oakland Raiders.

PFT and USA today reported that Claude Wroten and Jon Scifres failed their tests. Wroten would work as the first round talent.

I'm feeling lazy today so I didn't really study this mock against his previous one to see if there are any obvious differences in the two. At first glance I didn't notice any though.

 But, I'd rather the news be boring on this one. Thanks for the info and :lmao: Scifres...

Martin Gramatica breathes a sigh of relief...... for now.

I knew about Scifres but I hadn't heard about Wroten. You aren't referring to Wroten getting busted with pot a couple months ago are you (I believe the charges were subsequently dropped)? Surely this kid wouldn't be stupid enough to go out and smoke dope after that scare would he?

Defensive tackle Claude Wroten had a shot at being a first-round pick after LSU's season ended, then police stopped him for speeding in Sterlington, La., and arrested him on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. A month later, the district attorney declined the case, citing unspecified legal reasons. Wroten dodged the justice system but not the NFL's scrutiny.

"I've just got to prove to everyone that I let down that it's not me," Wroten says.

His latest draft projection: top of the second round.

i heard same thing bloom did...

they said wroten failed test... that is a separate issue from his earlier arrest in which charges were dropped.

I didn't think Wroten failed the test, just that he was arrested. The arrest has lowered him to 2nd round status.

BEsides, Hawk who drops 6 spots, Kirwan had some of the following big changes:

Thomas Howard (OLB) drops from #30 to #38

Davin Joseph (OG) drops from #31 to #41

Rodrique Wright (DT) drops from #32 to #64

Marcus McNeil (OT) drops from #33 to 3rd round?

Claude Wroten (DT) drops from 38 to 55

It could be Wroten. And Hawk's drop of 6 spots is big, but the drop off of McNeil is startling (as is Wright's).

If he did drop a player signficantly in his mock, combined with this news it could be construed to a leak in a court of law. PS - I am not a lawyer.

Wroten was in the first round of very early mocks this year. The number 38 ranking was already a drop from the 1st round because of character concerns. nfldraftcountdown

Strengths:Explosive one-gap penetrater...Good athlete with excellent quickness off the snap and a burst...Shows a good motor...Moves well and closes on the ball fast...Has a knack for being around the action...Does a really nice job of splitting double teams...Strong and physical with a nasty demeanor...Hard worker who wants to be great...Has a solid build despite his lack of height...Still has a lot of upside. Weaknesses:Does not have the size you would prefer...Is not a finished product and is still raw and developing as a player...Can do a better job against the run...Needs to increase his lower body strength...Will have trouble against massive offensive lineman who can overwhelm him...Struggles to shed blocks once opponents are locked on...Needs to stay more disciplined...Must still refine his technique. Notes:Former JUCO transfer who has never received the recognition he deserves...Top pass rushing defensive tackle who can wreak havoc in the middle and is still improving...Could be a better prospect than Marcus Spears was a year ago.

StrengthsClaude is a big kid that has excellent quickness in a short space. He is an excellent 1-gap DT and does a good job in disrupting the blocking scheme of the opponent’s offense. Claude plays a 1-gap scheme as well as any DT that has come out in the draft in the last few years. Needs to ImproveClaude is not in good shape. He is on the flabby side and doesn’t have the strength that you would think he should have. He doesn’t play the run very well at this stage of his career. Claude lacks good change of direction skills as well as good lateral movement; however, most of these negatives can be corrected and limited if he gets in better shape. Bottom LineI feel that if Claude slimmed down, he would be a much better DE at the next level rather than a DT. Mentally, he is not interested in stopping the run and this is fine with me, but I think he has to work harder to become an impact player at the next level. If he does, I’m sure he’ll lose the weight that he has now and at 280 lbs, he would be quick enough and strong enough to be a strong side DE. Claude will fit well as a DT into a 1-gap scheme because of his quickness, but I would sit with Claude before the draft and tell him right off that he needs to lose some weight to become a better player. I would also tell him that he needs to get much stronger and work a lot harder than he has so far; if he does, he can make a lot of money and have a much bigger impact at the next level as a strong side DE. Claude has the talent to be picked in the first round, but the question is will he work hard enough to transform himself into an impact player? This is the big question. Right now, he has the one ingredient that is very important to rush the passer at the next level and that is natural quickness. My question is will this out of shape, very talented player with potential to impact at the next level work to get better than he is right now? Length Til Impact on this player might be three to four years and that means that he isn’t a 1st round draft pick in my opinion. A 2nd rounder, yes, but not a first. But that’s just me personally. By the time we get to the draft, I’m sure he will be listed in the 1st round if he isn’t already. by Drew Boylhart THR December 2005

If we are talking 1st round "talent" that could definately be a player that is good enough football-wise to be a no brainer 1rd pick, but that concerns might push him lower.

what are you talking about? He has Hawk going 5th to Green Bay?

GOt the 1st and 2nd mocks mixed up for Hawk.Looks like Wroten is the one who failed the test.

THat raises the question as to why such a big drop for McNeil. Not sure why he's dropping. Last year he was considered a solid first rounder by most. He had a good season.

It's not A.J. Hawk! The only reason he would buy a van is so he can hump his ND babe 24/7!
But of all the projected 1st round picks, he is the only one who would not stand out at a Grateful Dead concert.Book'm Dan-O!
