A Forum For Home Leagues? (2 Viewers)

I've had some folks ask about Footballguys creating a new forum for home leagues.

Where individual leagues have their own subforum to do all the things leagues do. League communication and such and most importantly, smack talk.

I believe our friends at The Huddle did something similar, right?

Do you folks think there's a need / desire / demand for something like that here?

If so, let's hear it.

And specifically the structure and format and usability stuff you think works best.

Hi! This was (at least in part) me. Several of us at The Huddle are concerned that we may become homeless now that DMD is retiring, and we are asking Joe and the gang for our own cardboard box to live in

2 cents: the less forums I need to visit, the better. Make an overall home leagues thread and then have a per-league thread for each of the SharkPool leagues only (like last year’s League Uno thread). Sleeper has its own chat room for players to talk as well if we want, and League Uno definitely used both the SharkPool thread and the Sleeper chat. I think the SharkPool thread was fun so that other SharkPoolers not in the league could follow along and taunt as appropriate

There is a lot of complicated business that gets run within that space. Things like:
- League charter management, voting, and amendment process
- League dues management
- RFA auctions
- Rookie draft commentary
- Roster declaration
- Weekly free agent postings
- Trade confirmations
And…
- Smack talk

Seems like many topics that would be discussed in a home league sub-forum could be discussed here in the Shark Pool. But perhaps I’m missing something.

There was a subforum for each individual league.

Here's a link to their main forum page - Huddle Main Forums
If you scroll down towards the bottom, there are sub forums for individual leagues. Provides a single place to manage all league business that does not interfere with any of the main forums. It was/is also possible to have a password protected forum so that only league members can access the league forum. Not sure if that is possible with Xenforo (Huddle uses Invision, but is still on an older version that really needs to be updated), but that can help with moderation as you wouldn't have to deal with any bad actors spamming or intentionally messing with individual leagues.

I personally would support the addition, if it makes sense for FBG.

Who knows, maybe this turns into the gateway to you guys starting your own league hosting site ala MFL/Sleeper/RTSports, complete with a premium forum experience for each league with integration into the FBG rankings, projections, etc.

It’s a simple redraft year to year that FBG host and commish, so not as much “league business” to deal with year to year as a dynasty league, for example. For us last year at least in League Uno, we would either “at” Joey Wright in our SharkPool thread or “at”fbgcommish (or some name like that) in the Sleepr chat to get any “support” or ask league rules/nuance questions.

Besides that, it was mostly for talking crap to each other either in our forum thread or on the Sleeper league chat board.

So I guess I’m wondering if perhaps the format is changing or I’m missing something else here.

I don't think you're missing anything. Some have asked for a FBG forum to talk about their leagues.

Personally, I've always done this in a group chat. But I can see the value in having it here.

But for sure, for people that don't like forums or don't want another forum, this won't be for them. This will be for people who want more Community for their league and more interaction.

Thinking more on this…maybe a Single overall Home Leagues catch-all thread for ALL leagues (SharkPool members or not) and then a Single Home SharkPool Members Leagues where we can all talk crap together across leagues since we mostly “know eachother” from this board.

I think there’s some validity to a catch-all single SharkPool home league thread since there were a few SharkPool members last year, who WEREN’T in our a League Uno, checking in on thatvthr3d just to see what’s up, how it was going, taunting a bit, etc. it was truly a blast and imho improved the overall COMMUNITY of the SharkPool as a group (which I think has led to the increase in deprive to have MOE leagues like our League Uno.

Just check out the Huddle forums for an example of what is being discussed. Separate forums set up for individual leagues that run that gamut of redraft, keeper, dynasty, contract, IDP, auction, etc.

Yes. At this point, it's purely a question someone asked and I was just exploring what it might look like and if there was an interest here.

Correct. We don't currently plan to offer Dynasty Footballguys Home Leagues.

What I'm talking about here is the possibility of having subforums for people to use for their own leagues. Whatever they may be.

I am unaware of any fantasy hosting sites which do not provide a message board area (and also maybe a quick chat area) for just the league members. I would think those things being provided by the host site would be a prerequisite when searching for a host site for your fantasy league. Additionally, as someone else noted, all league data is right there. I see no reason to look at one site for fantasy data/info only to switch to another site to talk smack to a buddy because his RB sux and yours currently leads the league.

There is of course the possibility that none of your league mates really know much or anything about this site. Why clue them in if they haven't already figured out your secret to success?

We were making use of yahoo's native message board for league communication. That disappeared and has been a pain point having two guys that never access the group chat.

what I find so interesting about all the input here on league forum vs just using existing league chat is so similar to a conversation I was having earlier with a colleague about preferred type of community forum. He is a huge fan of the Reddit style and cannot stand free flowing chats with title channels. I like being able to jump into the conversation where ever it is but don't like the closed off channel style of reddit. In theory, they are the same thing. Just the way they are organized and presented is different. Just interesting.

That is essentially what I am saying. For the people worrying about having to scroll through topics, etc., there wouldn;t be any reason for you to look at these forums unless you wanted to. It would be tucked out of the way. One sub forum per league, so each league has it’s own set of topics and traffic. That’s the way we do it now.

Many of the leagues that use the Huddle message boards for the purpose of communications are in the style of contract dynasty with IDPS, taxi squads, often 16 teams, rosters of 35-45 players and taxi squads of 11-13 players. There is a LOT of communication that goes into managing these leagues. Some of the leagues are redraft leagues, sure, but honestly I am not sure why the league format matters.

My main thought on this is that these leagues have generally existed a long time. People are used to the format and it works well. There are other options, for certain. The idea here is to explore the possibility of replicating what’s happening at The Huddle over here, and possibly drive a bunch of new contributors over to these forums.

My other question would be; What is wrong with the message board on your host site that necessitates having those discussions on a forum website? Can that board not accomplish all that you desire it to?

It is not something my league would want. They barely use the message board that we do have.

When Joe asked about a forum for “home leagues” I thought he specifically meant the FootballGuys Home Leagues that this site started last year in partnership with Sleeper (and those are redraft leagues). I didn’t realize until after I polluted this thread with a half dozen posts that he meant “home leagues” as a very generic term for ANY league at all.

No worries at all. It's an interesting idea and one we'll consider.

Reason to have one? One word that you already know is the answer: Community.

Year 27 of a 14 team dynasty league over at the Huddle.
Only 9 managers have left the league in that time - 1 of those passed away.
Do the math on the turnover rate when people interact.

Biggest advantages of the messageboard for a league:
1. Above all else - the ability to search for info / topics.
- Using MFL as a reference: crappy messageboard does not carry over year to year - you have to go back each year and manually click on links to hope you have the right topic you are looking for. And you obviously can't quote quickly. Was that 14 years ago or 18? Hmmm
- MFL - you have to use current year or go back and change the year in the URL to find the messageboard (not a public link after a bit) - and that's if the league ID didn't change. If it did, more work.

2. League Commish is Moderator of the league forum. Lock it down (password protect), merge topics, pin, close, whatever.

I emphasize 27 years of dynasty info. Might want a FUNCTIONAL messageboard for:
- Formatting of topics and info is legible and looks decent. MFL replies are just terrible (as an example - hope you like run-on paragraphs)
- League rule discussions and voting threads
- Trade bait topic with actual details
- trade topics so we can discuss if we choose to
- General league BS/off-topic discussions
- I do an annual Mock Draft and we have banter
- I do an annual Pre-season rankings and we have banter
- Got a topic nearly 20 years old showing if we are a drafter, trader, or waiver-wire worker - updated before/after the each season. Pretty cool to see the changes over time. Keeps one in check if they think their team is even remotely the same 5 years later - sorry no 'for the next 10 years' in reality. LOL
- We do a draft pick/slot discussion topic.
- finances/dues/owes
- Polls with more room for verbiage.
- Week # topics to discuss, pull in historical info, who's clinched/eliminated as the play-offs approach. Tie-breakers defined (who beat who, total points, potential points watch for top draft picks)
- We have regular head2head, but we also do a weekly elimination for bonus coin. Who gets eliminated / still in it.
- I have another side competition where I'll pay their next years dues if they can pick a different weekly NFL loser all season long (can miss once).
- Does everyone participate in topics? Nope, but they have the option to.
- Get this... some of us have actually met each other in real life. Not gonna happen in most leagues of strangers.

Some like higher turnover rates of participants since there's less personal attachment.
Have 20 leagues and only care about transactions and line-ups? Not for you.

But those of us that used to be 'the late night crew' spending hours post-game chatting about football and life - we are a dying breed.

Welcome. The more the merrier. Doreys retirement is an enormous loss for the industry.

See Joe's be excellent to one another and high integrity posts. He isn't going to be all that tolerant of smack talk. He's got a line to not cross. Mom jokes, cursing...just read his pinned thread. We like funny posts and do it ourselves. I'm solely saying explain to your league where the line is.

As a long time board member there- why do you think we commonly said "no one cares about your league" in the Pool? Why was it sometimes untrue? You'll know this and understand this as a long time poster. I'm sure. We do have some hypocrisy but it makes sense to us.

The pool is for news and news commentary. FBGs doesn't like to have to shock it with chlorine to get rid of algae all the time but they love to swim with you and have a nice day.

My suggestion- make it a sub forum of the AC forum OR brain storm how this can work with the AC forum.
Forever a "why don't more people post there" section that could probably find its niche if leagues are involved.

crappy messageboard does not carry over year to year

For me this is the most compelling argument to have one. I miss being able to see a history of messages in my league. Good reasoning here @Riffraff

@Joe Bryant My unsolicited two cents is that you contact the Huddle ownership and see what their intentions are. If the Huddle is going to go dark then it would seem like it might be possible to import their messageboard/league communication setup to a subforum here. Obviously their would be a huge need if they close shop and a big potential customer base. If the Huddle is planning on rolling on then there probably wouldn't be a big need outside of the FBG home leagues. Overall my point is to determine the extent of the problem before defining the solution.

Reason to have one? One word that you already know is the answer: Community.

Year 27 of a 14 team dynasty league over at the Huddle.
Only 9 managers have left the league in that time - 1 of those passed away.
Do the math on the turnover rate when people interact.

Biggest advantages of the messageboard for a league:
1. Above all else - the ability to search for info / topics.
- Using MFL as a reference: crappy messageboard does not carry over year to year - you have to go back each year and manually click on links to hope you have the right topic you are looking for. And you obviously can't quote quickly. Was that 14 years ago or 18? Hmmm
- MFL - you have to use current year or go back and change the year in the URL to find the messageboard (not a public link after a bit) - and that's if the league ID didn't change. If it did, more work.

2. League Commish is Moderator of the league forum. Lock it down (password protect), merge topics, pin, close, whatever.

I emphasize 27 years of dynasty info. Might want a FUNCTIONAL messageboard for:
- Formatting of topics and info is legible and looks decent. MFL replies are just terrible (as an example - hope you like run-on paragraphs)
- League rule discussions and voting threads
- Trade bait topic with actual details
- trade topics so we can discuss if we choose to
- General league BS/off-topic discussions
- I do an annual Mock Draft and we have banter
- I do an annual Pre-season rankings and we have banter
- Got a topic nearly 20 years old showing if we are a drafter, trader, or waiver-wire worker - updated before/after the each season. Pretty cool to see the changes over time. Keeps one in check if they think their team is even remotely the same 5 years later - sorry no 'for the next 10 years' in reality. LOL
- We do a draft pick/slot discussion topic.
- finances/dues/owes
- Polls with more room for verbiage.
- Week # topics to discuss, pull in historical info, who's clinched/eliminated as the play-offs approach. Tie-breakers defined (who beat who, total points, potential points watch for top draft picks)
- We have regular head2head, but we also do a weekly elimination for bonus coin. Who gets eliminated / still in it.
- I have another side competition where I'll pay their next years dues if they can pick a different weekly NFL loser all season long (can miss once).
- Does everyone participate in topics? Nope, but they have the option to.
- Get this... some of us have actually met each other in real life. Not gonna happen in most leagues of strangers.

If we were to do something, it would have to be within the framework of the forums we currently have here. Not sure what you meant by FUNCTIONAL, but we are constrained by the (not perfect but pretty robust) forum software we currently have.
