A Math Challenge For You (1 Viewer)

Solution

0.0000, 0.0000, 0.9504
I don't think the word exactly means what you think it does
Based on the parameter set up in the original problem - I applied a percentage to each number, then add those numbers together to reach 8500....

Nothing in the original problem required the percentages to be > 0%
huh?

AFTER the percentage is applied to each number your total is 8500. You can also only take the percentage to 4 decimals.

Can you make this happen to get it to 8500 exactly?

your solution is 8500.3776
Hmmm when I plugged it into Google sheets it worked to 4 digits. I blame google.

ETA - it was showing 8500.0000
Do you even format cells brah? :)
I did - and I don't know why it was showing that....

But clearly user error in there somewhere....

It's not just Chat GPT, Excel Solver also throws its hands up. Took it a good 3 minutes and my laptop's fans were whirring at full speed, so it was really trying to solve it.

OK had a younger brother of friends stay with us over the weekend. He is on his way west to UCLA to start a PhD in math program. Was one of the top high school math olympians? mathletes? in the country several years ago. Just got back from a masters program at Cambridge.

I gave him this problem, he spent 20 minute writing and using some crazy software that I was unfamiliar with. Tells me he solved it. Shows me, and I have no idea how what he wrote is considered a solution. Asked for him to dumb it down for me, yet I still have no idea.

Anyone know what this means or how it is a solution? I can reach out and get more clarity, but thought some of you nerds might like to decipher this

I checked it.

Didn’t work.

It looks like he used the same basic logic, but then he also broke down the first and last numbers (27,520 and 8,944) into smaller components and worked from there. I’m not sure that necessarily improves the odds of success, but what do I know.

@ChiefD is just chillin’ out in Wisconsin, enjoying his new-found peace and quiet and drinking some cold ones while a groundswell of America struggles to solve the impossible.
