Accutane... Anyone have any knowledge/experience of this drug? (1 Viewer)

falguy

Inconceivable!
My son has pretty terrible acne. He's 20 now and it's been an issue for about 2, maybe 3 years. We've tried lots of prescribed medication. Some seemed to work for a while but nothing has lasted. We're hearing that accutane should be more, or less, a last resort due to the side effects. Curious if anyone has a child that's used it, used it themselves or maybe knows someone and if you can relate your experience.

I've read articles and there was a recent one on theloop.ca of a girl showing before and after and I think my son would suffer through the side effects to see a result like that. Most concerned about depression but also the supposed extremely dry skin.

We're currently waiting to see a dermatologist so going to get professional guidance here soon but thought I'd be proactive (not Proactiv) and check for opinions.

TIA

I took it in my teens. It worked very well. I was ####ed in the head prior to taking the drug and ####ed in the head after taking the drug, so can't really speak to the side effects. I do know I had to go in to have my triglycerides tested regularly as well.

ETA: I had the deep cystic acne. Not just a whitehead here and there, but zits that dug in like the Maginot Line. Even 20+ years later, my face is fairly acne free.

ETA: When I was on Accutane, I went to a week-long tennis camp where we were outside playing for roughly 8 hours a day. I could peel my lips off by the end of the second day.

My son took Accutane between 16-18, about 16 months in all. He was diagnosed with celiac disease at the age of 20.

My son was pissed at the possibility that Accutane caused his celiac disease. He talked with three doctors (his PCP, his dermatologist that prescribed, and the internal surgeon that diagnosed him) and a lawyer about joining a class action lawsuit. All four professionals would not say Accutane caused his disease, rather Accutane could have triggered a genetic predisposition. Son didn't join the lawsuit but cautions anyone that asks about Accutane.

I took accutane when I was a senior in high school.  It wiped out the acne but my whole body dried up and peeled like a leper.  I lost a full second from my hurdle time and my joints kind of ached but it's hard to pin that on the drug vs. the running.  I also was a little depressed but again it's hard to say if it was the drug that made me depressed or the fact that I was getting beat in races by people I was beating the year before and no women wanted to date a leper.

#### took care of my acne though.  Like dropping a nuke on it, but it was gone.

I took accutane as a ninth grader and you said it.  It's brought all my acne to the surface of my skin, so my acne got the absolute worst it could be for two days, but then I started peeling like a zombie from Dawn of the Dead. And not just my skin but my lips got dried out as well so I was constantly going through those little containers of Carmex.  If I wanted my lips to not get cracked and bleeding, I had to apply that stuff every half hour. I went through hell for 48 hours and anyone who had bad acne in junior high school remembers, junior high kids are awful. Once I started peeling, it took a week, but then I had baby smooth skin.

I remember getting a lot of nosebleeds as one of my side affects.

Forgot about the nose bleeds.  They were daily for a while.  I was on this stuff for about three months, so I remember my side affects lasting a lot longer than 48 hours.

My sister had bad acne and took it in her mid teens. Did wonders for her. No real side effects and really helped her acne.

I had terrible acne in high school. My face was an oil slick and every day there was a new zit or two (or five) to deal with.

My dermatologist was very concerned about giving me Accutane, but I begged and pleaded with her. Eventually she agreed to prescribe it -- but only in a lower dosage, for just 3 months.

Well, my face cleared up almost instantly, and for the next 3 months I felt more confident and happy than I'd felt in years. There were some side effects, but they were pretty minor (dry mouth and dry skin, but no peeling).

However, once I stopped taking the Accutane, the acne started to come back with a vengeance. By my senior year, it was worse than ever. I went back to my dermatologist, but she refused to prescribe Accutane again. She said that the risks were just too high. I went to a different dermatologist to get a second opinion, and he basically said "You only get one shot with this drug. You should consider yourself lucky that you don't have permanent lingering side effects."

So, I ended up having bad acne all through college and it really screwed with my social life. Took me years to recover.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have kept going to doctor after doctor after doctor until I found one willing to write a full-strength prescription for Accutane. I was willing to take the risks when I was 17, and I feel even stronger about it as an adult.

Your son is a bit older so maybe it's different for him. Has he tried other medications? I tried pretty much everything, but nothing worked except Accutane. Nothing even came close, actually. Stridex, Clearasil and Oxy-10 can eat a bag of #### for their misleading commercials which always seemed to show kids with perfect skin except for one tiny little pimple which magically goes away after a single application. That's not reality. Screw them for giving false hope to kids who didn't win the clear skin lottery.

In all honesty, I could have peeled for an entire week but I can't remember. The FDA approved accutane in '82 and I was taking it in '83

The side effects vary wildly from person to person. Most people can at least expect some dryness & thinning of the skin. You also must have your liver values checked every so often.

If his acne is bad, I'd strongly recommend checking into it. It'll keep the acne at bay & prevent scars.

Sorry to hear about your son :(. Thank you for sharing this information as it's definitely something where we want to know all the risk factors before we try this. Whether it did cause it for your boy or not we need to consider that possibility. I'll do some additional research. Again, thanks for sharing your story!

He's currently using something called TactuPump (Tactuogel) and also pills Doxycycline Hyclate. Tried all the over the counter stuff.  The recent combination showed some positive signs for a while but lately it's been a mess. Just so frustrating, He's already a very shy kid. Anyway, we're eventually going to see the dermatologist (2 month wait list :( ) and I suspect they may look at something potentially less "harsh" as Accutane.

Just need to find something.

Appreciate all the comments from everyone

I had really bad acne in high school so I took it in my late teens as a last resort.  Cleared it up.   Only real side effect I can remember was really bad night vision.   I was in college and would have to drive home for the doctor visits to check my liver, so I would do it at night.  Luckily I knew all the exit signs on the way home, I remember trying to read them and couldn't get them into focus before I passed them.

Definitely expecting scars. When it was in a pretty clear period about 6 months ago there was definite scarring but we'll deal with that when the time comes

Even more reason to get on it a soon as possible. All meds are a risk, you just have to weigh the side effects against the consequences.

Assuming a competent Derm, if your kid is as healthy as a 20-year old should be, I would have no qualms about putting him on Accutane.

I took it in my early 20s.  It worked extremely well.  I had no real side effects except dry mouth.
Same. My timing sucked as I started taking it right before heading off to college. Broke out worse than before, for the first semester in college. You know, when everyone else is living it up with their preferred gender.

I was on it at least twice.  Once when I was 18 and once when I was 22.  There might have been another time in the middle, I don't remember.  Worked great.  I am unaware of any side effects.

I heard her talking about this on Rogan's podcast last week.

http://whitneycummings.tumblr.com/post/737106650/come-on-my-face

Apparently I have good skin, which is weird because my whole life I’ve had terrible skin. Like a garbage Pail Kids situation. For me, the battle against bad skin started early. As a teenager i took accutane. My derm told me it would possibly cause “anal leakage," for my skin to break out more, suicidal tendencies, and deformities in future babies, to which I responded "how soon can i start?"  I took it not once but twice. Most of the side effects he warned against ensued, which also led to other side effects such as not having a prom date, a drinking problem, and having about one iota of self-esteem. On the bright side, the anal leakage didn’t occur but my constant fear it yielded quite a firm tush. However, that still didn’t help on the prom date front.

Since then, I’ve put everything on my face. I’ve bought every product. I’ve done every facial, every mask, every weird new fad, Wiccan ritual, read the Secret, yelled. Then, at the point in my life when I didnt’ think my skin could get worse, I decided to become a comedian, which is an exhausting life that entails little sleep, lots of smokey clubs, frequent bouts of rage, and a tremendous amount of time spent on dry, oxygenless germ festivals called airplanes (usually the source of the bouts of rage.) So, I promptly began aging really fast. Within a year I looked like Larry King  and had huge blue under eye bags. Seriously, if I shaved my head I could have joined the blue man group or at the very least have intangible proof that I’d be alone forever.

Right on the brink of giving up, I discovered this cream by Weleda. I only shop at natural food stores now because I’m insanely paranoid about chemicals in food and cosmetics. I started buying all natural shampoo, deodorant, creams, etc. Just as a side note, I’ve noticed since I’ve been using them that I’m much less insane, although I do sometimes smell like a pig in a blanket.

My daughter started on it when she was 15, it was a life changer for her. Rid her of it quickly and completely. Some dry skin and a little bit of joint pain but well worth what she gained in self-confidence. As bad as acne can be psychologically for boys man it’s brutal for girls.

My son started Accutane today.  He, his mom and I will obviously be monitoring for all the known side effects and he goes month by month with blood work tests to keep tabs on things.  Here's hoping it works as well for him as it did for most of you who replied.  I'll post updates if anyone cares to follow along.
