I feel like I'm taking up a battle about something I hardly ever do, but..
if you do that, you're not a fine driver. eventually you'll hit someone in your blind spot. you're not pulling a trailer. you don't need to swing out into another lane to make a turn.
I think you missed or ignored the post where I said I only do it if I'm sure no one is even close to me-which means I do very infrequently. I also think you're in no position to make generalizations on the skill of my driving.
You're in an SUV with power steering. Would you say that it's easier to turn a wheel slightly to the left, or turn it slightly to the right and then slightly to the left?
Now it depends on what type of turn we're talking about. If it's a slight curve in the road, and I only turn my wheel slightly, then I would never swing a couple of inches into the other lane. If it's a sharper turn I might make a wider turn if I know no one is near me.
