Adrian Peterson Status Updates (1 Viewer)

I remember when Donte Stallworth killed a guy in the offseason and was signed as a free agent and on the field the very next season.

Do not forget a strike is possible if this keeps up.
There is no way NFL players will strike to support Adrian Peterson in this.
Not in support of him, but in support that they could be next. Why do you even think this NFLPA war has anything to do with Peterson and not the bigger picture?
I can't believe you think this might happen. The possibility of a strike to support Peterson is 0.
NOT IN SUPPORT OF PETERSON, BUT FOR A NEW PERSONAL CONDUCT POLICY! Some in the union can consider this harsh punishment and what is going on with how Rice is treated by the commish and from what Fujita tweeted. Sorry, just because people make mistakes does not meant hey do not have rights allowed to them by a CBA that is not being fulfilled correctly.

Sorry for all caps, but some are obviously misunderstanding the point I have made clear.
Yea but there is no way they strike now. They'd be crushed easily by the NFL with just the words child abuser. They need some distance before they even think of striking. But the sentiment is certainly there.
I agree, I did not say they would strike now. But one can be likely soon. The Union cant let the NFL interpret the CBA how they want and not how they agreed. Those are the claims made by the union at least.

"an NFL executive told Adrian that his time on the Commissioner's list would be considered as time served."
Says who? Did he get it in writing?
Says the head of the players union.
Seems like people think "considered" means it was automatic. Doesn't it mean they will take into account that he didn't play while on the exemption list and not that it *will* be used as time served? I don't see how the actions are different from what was stated even if this anonymous executive actually said this.

Ahhh, the good ole days...
Now you spank your kid in a way that was acceptable when you were a kid you get season long suspension. Paddles, belts, wooden spoons and switches... I got spanked by them all and will never consider my mother an abuser. You use any of that now, well, you see what the law and society thinks of you.

Now it all makes sense.

I'm sorry to hear that, btw.

More from Goodell's letter

“Your plea agreement in Texas, and the related violation of the Personal Conduct Policy, arise out of abusive injuries that you inflicted on your son earlier this year,” Commissioner Goodell said in his letter. “Based on public reports of your statements and photographs that were made public at the time of the indictment, you used a ‘switch’ – a flexible tree branch – to punish your son, striking him in the ankles, limbs, back, buttocks, and genitals, leaving visible swelling, marks, and cuts on his body and risking severe and long-term damage. The visible injuries were such that a local pediatrician in Minnesota, upon examining your son, felt obligated to make a child abuse report to the police. According to contemporaneous media reports, police and medical examiners termed the cuts as ‘extensive’ and as ‘clinically diagnostic of child physical abuse.’ Based on the severity of those injuries, a grand jury made up of citizens of Montgomery County, Texas, voted to indict you on a felony charge, reflecting their belief that there was reasonable cause to conclude that you had overstepped the bounds of acceptable corporal punishment and engaged in physical abuse of your child. Moreover, it appears that this is not the first time that you have punished children in this way. Public statements attributed to you indicate that you believe that this kind of discipline is appropriate and that you do not intend to stop disciplining your children this way.”

I hear slavery is also now frowned upon. Funny how times change.

Have to say.. Good job NFL.. you found a loop hole by using the "Commissioners Exempt list" AND the "Personal Conduct" Policy to effectively suspend ADP for a year without having to say "Suspended for a year" so as to avoid having to deal with this until next year..

Well played Commish.. Well played..

Can we get updates here for fantasy football purposes only. No debates on how to properly discipline a child, no arguing about cultural differences between the north and south, nobody is allowed to comment on whether they got spanked as a child and no discussion of whether or not this is making us soft as a society/country/whatever. No mentions of switches or scrotums or anything of the like. This is just for football related information.

Now if AP wins his grievance to be removed from he CEL, he can play as early as this week while he appeals the 6 game suspension. Just what the NFL wants for PR. A drawn out court battle that they have a 50\50 chance of having their 6 game suspension reduced while the player they punished can get back on the field.
Good luck with that.
Its a possible scenario. Not sure luck plays into it. His grievance is decided tomorrow. If he's removed from the CEL, the Vikings have to decide whether to cut him or play him. They can't send him home because of the whole TO thing.
Didn't an arbitrator decide that AP would be suspended for the remainder of the year? If so, is this arbitrator neutral or employed by the NFL? Who decides the appeal? If the arbitrator is neutral I wouldn't expect the appeal to be successfull, and if it is, I only think the suspension would be reduced to 3-4 games.
The grievance for the CEL is separate from any appeal he will file.

I find it "funny" that his letter mentions what ADP said the day he was originally charged, but does not take into account ANYTHING he said a few weeks later when he had time to reflect on his actions..

I use to like Goodell.. But he continues to f'up so many things that it is time for him to go and move onto someone who won't switch positions depending on the wind.. :bye:

I love that excuse as if holding a person against their will and torturing them without any dignity just because of their skin color is the same as punishing your child.

You will be shocked at the number of people who agree with me but just say nothing to avoid the people who claim to be against abuse but have no problem abusing people verbally online.

They couldn't have botched this more than they already have. Instead of dealing out a punishment and that being that, his fiasco continues into next year. This off season is going to be brutal.

for the record i assume the vikings are actually happy here...there's no way they are looking forward to peterson playing

 There were some "rumblings" that some on executives didn't want him back.. But those were anonymous sources so could have been a Secretary of an executive for all we know.

The team themselves wanted him back and the Public opinion in the area had switched from 75% never wanting him to play for the Vikings ever again when the story and pictures first broke.. to 75% wanting him back when he pleaded "no contest" to the charges..

ETA.. Don't forget.. No matter what happened here, the Vikings were about 80% sure they'd be trading him in the off season. So, in that regard, they Definitely want him to play so as to up his trade value..

Now.. Not sure what if anything they could get form him .. especially since they said they won't consider allowing him to play until a few weeks before the NFL Draft.. :oldunsure:

For the record the new policy on domestic abuse the nfl released erlier lists among the mitigating factors that can increase punishment:

repeated striking

abuse in the presence of a child

use of a weapon

that's a hat-trick in this case if you consider a switch a weapon, which the nfl says it does

i do not think they are looking forward to sinking a ton of money into a national PR nightmare on a season where they have no real hope. I may be wrong, but I do not think ownership wants him back.

See that's funny. They watch Rice beat down his own wife in a public area... mmmmm, two games... their moral barometer is up and down.
Cynically, and sadly: that was only because the league thought they could keep the video evidence under wraps. A mistake that should never be repeated, one hopes.

Similarly, photos of Peterson's son's welts buried AP in the court of public opinion. Few outside of FF circles really care about his plea deal.

No, because this is in fact not the thread for the highly charged discussion of what he did. There is a thread for that. This thread isn't minimizing his actions, but trying to stay objective in regards to "football matters". You will not find any "sympathizers" here. Simply people vested in Fantasy Football awaiting a quick decision.

I grabbed Peterson off the wire two weeks ago and I am satisfied with the news because now I know what to do with him on my roster. I don't feel he had any "right" to play, just that he deserved the right to be treated by the NFL in transparent and quick manner. And I think that is all most posters here wanted as well.

So hop off your box and, yes, post your outrage in the appropriate thread.

And when they dealt a year to a coach and several players for bountygate under their arbitray rules but only fined NE and took a draft pick for spygate? Is that consistent or whatever they felt at the time.

Yeah, I don't know.

We will now have an appeal with a demand for an independent arbitrator - the Rice matter involved a federal judge that was brought in, and that decision is looming - followed by a lawsuit with a request for an injunction.

In all of this Goodell and others could be asked to testify. So the truth will out.

I heard Smith and Florio on the Dan Patrick show this am and the union is pssed.

With the Pats they destroyed the tapes.

With the Saints they dropped the matter when sued and as soon as it appeared Goodell or others at the NFL would have to testify.

With Rice they lied about seeing the video.

I'm guessing with AP they made promises about the exempt list, we shall see.

Talk is cheap. AP didn't do much to account for his actions. Even if he was faking it, he should have spent his off time in counseling, maybe a speaking tour around the state, etc. That could have gone a long way. His advisors should be fired.

Which is why this is a complete grand stabding by the league. "See we're tough, we got the best RB in the league out for the year. Get off our back for only given rice 2 games."

Meanwhile the way in which they did it violated the unions rights to due process under the CBA and is completely inconsistent with other cases of a similar nature with lesser players.

It really feels like Goodell deliberately kept Peterson on the Exempt List so that he could suspend Peterson for exactly 6 games and not have Peterson come back this season.

I think that Adrian has gotten caught in the middle of much bigger forces than he should, but that is the reality of the situation. Child abuse/punishment ... whatever you feel fits is swept up in Ray Rice saga. But more so, the NFLPA appears to have decided this is the case they want to take the NFL to the mat on. During the CBA negotiations, there were many on here and in the NFL world questioning why they did not address the personal conduct policy. NFLPA answer - they wanted to focus on more $$$ and less practice time and would deal with it later (ie litigation). So the NFLPA gave away the opportunity to have a say in this process to get other items on their wish list.

Cris Carter stated this morning that AP has not been going to prescribed counseling and has text several times in the recent months that he would still discipline his kids the same way. And the NFLPA advising AP to not meet with the Commissioner last Friday as well as not providing requested information was basically giving the NFL the middle finger. Not the best way to resolve this in positive manner, instead it appears the NFLPA may be throwing AP under the bus to allow them grounds to attack Goodell's position and decisions.

what is?? That they were going to trade him?? He is 30+.. and currently has a $15,400,000 Cap hit for 2015, $15,000,000 for 2016 and $17,000,000 for 2017..

There was no way he was playing for the Vikings under those numbers next year.. so either he'd renegotiate(20% chance) or be traded(80% chance) and the feeling up here was that he would more then likely be traded...

Sure the % are a guess.. But it was the basic feeling up here with those in the know..

He beat the hell out of a child - who gives a rip about the commissioner's consistency here? I don't. The message is clear, in my mind: If you and an adult have a dispute - even one that involves grotesque, unnecessary and vile actions such as the Rice incident - you are still dealing with two adults. If you harm a child there will be severe consequences. Simple as that.

All of you need to wake up - Goodell has every right to assess the punishments on personal conduct violations off the field.

The NFLPA gave that authority to Goodell so they could get more $$ and less practices, hitting in practices, etc. This is an issue that was brought up several times when the CBA was being negotiated. I think the only reason the NFLPA /M Smith are making a "stand" is due to M Smith being challenged for his leadership - mostly over this issue.
