SAN FRANCISCO -- Many people first learned about the exploits of 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith last season. On Monday night, a national television audience had the chance to witness Smith's ability to change the complexion of a game at any time.

Smith recorded 5 1/2 sacks of Chicago Bears quarterback Jason Campbell and forced two fumbles in setting the tone for the 49ers' defensive dominance in a 32-7 victory at Candlestick Park."I have a thing for night games," Smith said. "I love the lights."

Smith came within a half sack of former defensive end Fred Dean's single-game team record, set on Nov. 13, 1983, against the New Orleans Saints. Smith's 15 sacks are two more than the Denver Broncos' Von Miller, who beat out Smith as the AP's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year last season.

Smith, the 49ers' first-round draft pick last year, is on pace to collect the most sacks through two seasons by anyone in NFL history. Reggie White (31) and Derrick Thomas (30) are the only ones who produced more than Smith's 291/2, thus far.

Smith had three sacks by halftime Monday night. He already has 1 1/2 more sacks than he had last season, 9 1/2 sacks the past three games and is on pace to record the most sacks by a 49er since Cedrick Hardman's 18 in 1971, the latest chronicled mark in the team's record book. Roy Barker was the last 49er to record four sacks in a game, on Oct. 25, 1998, against the Rams.

i didn't see much of the game. saw part of the touchdown drive the bears had. about 2 plays before the TD - when Smith already had 4 sacks - they completely failed to block him and i thought he killed campbell. fortunately for the bears the ball was already thrown but he just leveled campbell.

thank god he doesn't play the eagles this year. he'd get double-digit sacks against that line.

In fairness, last season he was a situational pass rusher where he feasted on obvious passing 3rd downs. He also plays in the NFCW. Without Justin Smith, I dunno if he get's the sack numbers he has. But he is a beast, if not his own worst enemy in his personal life.

Chicago's line is a complete laughingstock. In Denver, Cutler was one of the best in the league (second behind Peyton) at avoiding sacks, but even he can't stop from getting killed back there. Wasn't Chicago also the team that gave up Osi's 6 sack game years ago? Either way, it's absolutely unconscionable that their line has been this bad for this long. It's like Groundhog Day, only instead of Bill Murray, it stars the 2002 Texans offensive line.

With that out of the way, Smith is one of the top 5 pass rushers in the NFL today, and if you can't see that, we must be watching a different sport.

I didn't write the article. But yeah, sacks didn't become an official stat til 1982. So the writer obviously meant since then.

In case you hadnt noticed, this IS the Shark Pool, where people post threads about good players. I dont see your point about the timing of the thread. He didnt lead the league in sacks until last night, and I felt like posting about it. Jesus H Christ, this place stinks of urine.

I was surprised how strong he is. Knew he was cat quick but 3 of those sacks last night came from a pure bull rush. Campbell was repeatedly sacked by his own lineman. The Smiths just tossed that entire side into his lap.

Side note: the top 13 picks of the 2011 NFL draft featured Von Miller, Aldon Smith, Marcel Darius, JJ Watt, and Nick Fairley. Could you imagine having to block that defensive front? 2011 looks like it will be to pass rushers what 1984 was to quarterbacks.
