Alge! (1 Viewer)

No NEWS to anyone that Alge Crumpler is Vick's favorite target.

Assuming Vick "spends some time away from the game" does that necessarily translate to Alge's previous year-in year-out consistent production being in dire jeopardy with another QB (Harrington!?!?) at the helm?

Or is he still the team's best receiver so therefore he'll "get his"? Perhaps whom ever takes over (Harrington!?!?) can't run away from trouble so the safety valve *ALGE!* will get even more targets.

Anyone have any thoughts on this equation?

If Vick is out, I think his numbers may even go up with Harrington. They won't have a QB running for 1000 yards, so they have to get those yards somehow. I think Harrington will lean heavily on Alge.

First of all, we have to make sure Alge is healthy. But, assuming he is, I don't see how his numbers would go up with Harrington under center. However, if they Falcons were to bring in a real NFL starter (e.g., Culpepper), Crumpler's potential would be stunning.

Flourish! Probably better stats, Crumpler is a great safety valve for anyone and he will be used heavily when the RB game falters.

C'Pep was never known for relying on his TEs.I'm very wary of Crumpler. He's possibly going from a QB that had a massive mancrush on him in a system where he was the primary target to a strange QB with no history of relying on his TEs in an offense designed around the verticle game (and, therefore, the WRs). It's possible his numbers stay the same, but I see little chance for them to increase and a huge chance that they regress.

Harrington threw the ball to McMicheal a lesser te then Crumpler 48 times in 11 games...Crumpler caught 56 passes all 16 games of last year...I wouldnt expect his numbers to plummet...Prob drop a little bit with less success in the redzone.

Here is a current discussion on the potential ff impact, including Crumpler.

http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...howtopic=327794

I don't think he'll flop, but would downgrade him because Vick so heavily relied on him over his receivers.
I would have downgraded him BEFORE Vick got in troule.new offense, new coaching philosophy, college coach coming to the pros. not overly impressed with any college coach turned head coach. see saban, see the ole ball coach, steve spurrier.not sure the Petrino show is going to work in Atl. The previous OC is in Oakland now..Gregg Knapp..

Harrington loves throwing to the tight end. At least he did in college.

The loss of Vick seems to likely be be a small downward bump for Crumpler in my view... and potentially a small upward bump for Horn and Jenkins. But the real degree of the bump is yet to be determined.

I haven't checked stats but recall Wiggins and Kleinsasser did okay with CPepp. Not great, but okay. CPepp also didn't need TE to rely on. He had Moss as his #1, #2 and safety valve receiver, when he didn't just rely on his legs. With his running ability questionable now (either because of his knee, but probably as much because of his inhibition about getting hit again), he might really rely on someone like Alge. With Harrington, not sold on Alge's stats going up. Vick really relied on him. I'd bet Alge's stats stay about the same or drop a bit.

Crumpler gets ticked down several spots. A lot of his yards and TDs came when he was wide open on a VIck scrambled play. The WR's might get a few more yards with joeey back there not running at all.

Minnesota has featured, in turns, Chamberlain, Kleinsasser, and Wiggins at the TE position. They have finished 7th, 11th, and 7th with C'Pep throwing them the ball. Not cover-your-eyes awful, but pretty mediocre, all in all. And remember, this was when C'Pep was throwing for yards in the bunches and there was nobody besides Randy Moss to catch them.As I said, it's possible that Crumpler's numbers hold steady, but I think they have very little chance to increase and tons of chances to decrease.

I think there's a great chance Alge's numbers increase given that he'll be playing in an offense which throws a lot more than 400 passes this season, something he hasn't had the benefit of since developing into a top fantasy TE.

I only own Crumpler in one league, so I think this is a non-bias opinion. I think his numbers will go up. We'll see less runs from the QB position, and I believe Harrington gets happy feet and would prefer to dump off to Crumpler than stand in the pocket and wait for a WR to get down field while he gets sacked.

I don't care if Harrington loves his TE's(like it really matters with a turd like Joey Heisman). He is the only weapon that teams will focus on at this point. Stay away...

Too many changes. New QB/New system/New coach = too much risk.

A poor decision-maker at QB like Vick is the kind who will lock in on one target in particular. Anyone decent (not sure that really includes Harrington) looks for multiple targets. I wouldn't think Crumpler gets as many looks as he did before.

The passing #'s will most surely go up, but the distribution will also change. He may still end up being the #1 target, but his new QB (presumably if it's not Vick) won't have the same man-crush for Crumpler. When Vick was QB, he had 3 options. Hand it off, pass to Crumpler, or run. That will change. I don't think Crumpler's #'s will really change much for better or for worse. He's a solid option and should finish right around where he has in previous years. 50-60 catches for about 600-700 yds and 6-7 TDs looks great to me.

I don't get this type of comment. Especially from a respected FF baller. Harrington is a young QB who hasn't exactly had the type of coach or team to excel with. Jeff Garcia sucked in Detroit but put some playmakers and a coach around him and he will win big games.Look at Drew Brees how long did it take him to come around? How about david Carr? I bet if you put Carr or Harrington in for Bulger that they would both throw as many TD's to Holt. Now if Garcia can't stay upright and Caddy can't get rolling does that mean Garcia's washed up. No a QB needs a solid team to shine!

If Harrington was any good, he would have given some sign of it by now. He hasn't. His CAREER BEST ypa is 6.2, which is pretty stunningly awful. I seem to recall an article on Football Outsiders discussing how the worst two YPA totals in the last 25 years of football were both posted by Harrington. With guys like Jake Plummer- decent QBs stuck on awful teams- you get some flashes of greatness from time to time, but Harrington never gave that. From watching the games, it's not that his team sucks, it's that he has happy feet, feels pressure that isn't really there, is too quick to throw the ball away, and lacks anything resembling accuracy on long or intermediate routes.P.S. Drew Brees "came around" in the third season in which he started a game (4th season overall). Prior to that, he had appeared in 28 football games in his career. Joey Harrington has appeared in SEVENTY football games in his career, and has a career 5.7 yards per attempt, which is worse than Drew Brees' worst season ever (5.9 yards per attempt). That argument doesn't even hold a thimble full of water.

Drew Brees had the best RB in the world and an all world receiver for a TE. He also had an o-line. What'd Harrington have? Same garbage as Garcia!

Alge's TD numbers will go down a bit just because without Vick Atlanta will not move the ball as well and won't have as many red zone opportunities. His catches/yards #s should stay about the same.

Why wouldn't you? The guy is huge stretches the field and has great hands.

Not for his first three seasons he didn't. After his third season, some people thought that Tomlinson was the third-best RB in the AFC West (behind Holmes and Portis), many thought that his offensive line was the worst in the league, and most had never even heard the name Antonio Gates. If you want some other crappy QBs to compare to, there's always Tim Couch, David Carr, Kyle Boller, J.P. Losman, and co. All of these had just as much junk around them, and they all managed to outproduce Joey Harrington. When your goal in life is to one day be as good as Tim Couch, it's pretty clear that you're a bust.

Alge will struggle because of Harrington for the first half of the year. Then with a 1-7 record they put in Shockley and he has a better 2nd half. If you can go grab Eric Johnson @ N.O.

According to Week 6 - Players in the News (Wednesday Night Edition)

Alge didn't practice Wednesday... but no injury listed... anyone know why?

Any chance it because of his verbalizing his disappointment after the loss on Sunday?

Because of his knees and ankle he usualy sits out 1-2 practices per week. Usually it's Thursday. I doubt there'll be any lingering issues about him speaking out. Petrino is getting hammered here in the local press and he'd be foolish not to use his best weapons to try and get back on track. From todays AJC:

Crumpler ready to lead

Flowery Branch — Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler and coach Bobby Petrino met to clear the air over concerns the Pro Bowl player had over the direction of the team.

After a disheartening 20-13 loss to Tennessee that dropped the Falcons to 1-4, Crumpler suggested that veterans were being phased out under the rookie head coach.

"Coach and I did meet," Crumpler said Wednesday. "With respect to that conversation, I won't get into the details, but we definitely agreed that we're capable of winning games."

He said he regrets his eruption after the game.

"I care about the guys in this locker room so much and just want to win so bad," Crumpler said. "I hate that my frustrations got the best of me in an instant right after a game. We cleared the air. We talked about some things."

Crumpler, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, said he's ready to buy into Petrino's program.

"Now is a time where I'm needed the most," Crumpler said. "Where Warrick [Dunn] is needed the most, Lawyer [Milloy] and Keith Brooking are needed the most. I really believe that we can get this ship turned in the right direction. Support [quarterback] Joey [Harrington] and support the guys that we have up front and the new guys that we're going to be putting in there, regardless of who they may be, we'll do all right."

Crumpler has 18 catches this season and is on pace for 58. His best season was in 2005, when he caught 65. However, he is not being used on intermediate or deep routes up the field. He's averaging 10.8 yards a catch, which would be a career-low.
