All Time Soccer/Football Draft and Tourney (1 Viewer)

Are Messi and Cristiano really considered 2 of the top 3 of all-time or is this draft (as I imagine it will be) going to be HEAVILY slanted in favor of current players?

Are we currently blessed with seeing 2 of the greatest players ever on the field at the same time, in the same league?  That's pretty amazing.

1.4 - Diego Maradona

At #4 I expected Ronaldo, but yeah, this will do nicely. Tough to write a lot about a guy who I never got to see live(missed the '94 games before he go sent off home, just clips and reading about the legend. He'll slot in nicely at AMR where he can cut inside and use that sweet left foot of his or AMC where he can roam freely.

Mano de Dios!

@AcerFC you're up

Yes. Yes.

Yes(with some wiggle room down to top5)  and yes

Point 2- Yup and it's one reason why I laugh at anyone who truly dislikes one or the other.

Sit back and enjoy it

If you value international success, Diego is your guy.  That 86 team was OK, but nothing really special without him.  The 90 team that he dragged to the final was worse.

It's easy to look at the lack of a European championship and say that Maradona's club career is the weak point.  But he led Napoli to two Serie A titles over an AC Milan team that was stacked.  That's an amazing accomplishment.

If Messi's going 1.1, Ronaldo's going 1.3 and I'm picking 1.17, I'm guessing I'm going to end up with a lot of old guys.

Messi is acknowledged to be in the conversation with Pele and Maradona as the greatest of all-time.  Messi probably has at least had the greatest European club career of all time.

I imagine CR7's place may vary greatly depending on how you value things like being the acknowledged best in your era, club versus international success, statistics versus titles, etc.  You really can't overstate CR7s goal scoring record with Real, though.  It's insane.

Sorry to post and run. Im on my way for a family get away weekend. Will post more later.

1.5 Johan Cruyff, M
Big fan of Cruyff. He's behind the first four picks on talent, but he's one of the most intelligent and well-rounded players ever. I always love the team-building aspect of drafts like this, trying to get a cohesive unit rather than just a group of stars, and Johan's a good start on that.

I imagine the question of club vs international success is one that's been debated for years.  I also imagine that some countries value international success more than club and vice versa.  It seems like fans of teams in the EPL are far more concerned with club success.  I imagine South American fans to be the opposite.

Cruyff is also the only one of these guys (in fairness we don't know yet with Messi and CR7) that has had a big impact after his playing career.  Everything Barcelona is was built on a foundation laid first by Cruyff.  He created La Masia.  And the Barca house style all comes from his time assembling the Dream Team.  He didn't manage all that long, but he's one of the few guys in the draft who could probably be drafted as a player and a manager.

He can only be drafted once though, right? Can he be player/manager?

Cruyff's club resume is unimpeachable.  3 straight European titles with Ajax.  Barca's first La Liga title in 14 years.  He was the outstanding player of the 74 World Cup, even the De Oranje fell short.  And we'll never know what might have happened if he had deigned to play in 78.  Unlike Pele, I saw him play a bit as my family had Washington Diplomats season tickets.  He hated playing for Gordon Bradley, but he still produced moments of magic.  After the NASL, he came back to Ajax and won another title and then led Feyenoord to the title when Ajax had the audacity to tell him he was too old.

Hadn't really thought about it.  I don't want someone getting an extra player by avoiding a manager, so I'm going to say no to the player/manager.  I don't have strong feelings either way about players also being drafted solely as managers.  I doubt it would come up much, but I can think of a at least one where its probable (not Cruyff).  What do people think?

I'd assume we keep them separate. I'm guessing managers won't be a high priority for most drafters anyway.

If you are drafting on only club form, then probably only Friedel gets in.   If you take into account international play, Landon has to be some where late in the draft.
Well, I think it should be both. You need both club and country performances to be considered an all time great IMO. (Dig at the Messi and Ronaldo picks?)

I was thinking Landon for sure, then maybe Claudio Reyna, Brad Friedel, and maybe Brian McBride. Outside of Landon maybe, I don't think an American deserves to be drafted outside of the last few rounds, though.

I don't know what the rules are.  Landon obviously gets dinged for never having a career in Europe but his international numbers are obviously impressive.

You have to look at position though. It's not top 300 players of all time, it's top (whatever many we need) MF/FW/AMCs.

McBride was a nice player but you could get a strong argument that he would not start over Dempsey on an all time US team.

Reyna is interesting because he was such a solid player where ever he went but never a star (his style was so quiet he was rarely noticed by fans).  He was very respected though on the teams he played in Europe as he captained 2 or 3 of them in his career.

This actually hurts a player like Landon since he never had 1 position.  He excelled at various spots but that could benefit him since many people value a jackknife type player off the bench.
