I, too, was hoping for Beckenbauer to fall.

1.08 - Alfredo Di Stéfano

At a conference for the next few days, so I'm limited to short posts from my phone... I was hoping to build a team of modern players, but this is the obvious pick here. Just Google him.
Very nice pick.

I think people are going to think that this is a reach.  But I'm going to go with the player who made me fall in love with the sport.  It was 1982.  The World Cup was in Spain.  And Brazil was amazing.  It was like watching the Globetrotters.  But like the Globetrotters, Brazil didn't bother to worry too much about defending leads.  When they lost to Italy on a Paolo Rossi hattrick, I cried.

The player for that Brazil team is, IMO, tied with Maradona as the best AM I've seen.  He'll always be remembered for that World Cup disappointment, and he only played one season in Europe (where he scored 22 goals for Udinese).  But in his first stint with Flamemgo, he scored 378 goals in 502 games.  God knows how may assists he had, as he was the best playmaker I've ever seen.  When those Flamengo sides played top European sides, like Liverpool in the 1981 Intercontinental Cup, Flamengo destroyed them.

Here's the thing about Il Fenomeno.  He absolutely deserves the Top 10 pick, but he's the first guy picked who you wonder if he could have been even better.  Before the knee injuries, he had the athleticism of CR7.  After the injuries, he became a more clinical finisher.  You put the footballing brain of the Real Ronaldo in the body of the Barca/early Inter Ronaldo and it would have been amazing.  Do seek out the YouTube compilations.  He's the soccer equivalent of Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson.

I remember this fondly. That team was one of the most fun teams to watch, but I have to admit my favorite on the team was the Cannon.

This post makes me sad that I spent 30+ years of my life rejecting soccer.

lazy poacher, imo.

To me, Ronaldo was futbol's Greg Maddux. Maddux was a power pitcher at the start of his career, then became a crafty pitcher when he lost zip on his fastball. Ronaldo reinvented himself the same way.

Bo Jackson is an awesome cross-sport comparison for those non-soccer fans following along. Watch the highlights from his early years with Barca, before the knee injuries robbed him of his speed.

oh- #### yeah.

my favorite player- silky smooth easy style, insane vision and touch, and deceptively hard working. watching him on TV, I just assumed he was lazy and that the opposition "allowed" him to play. wrong. I've relayed getting to see him play live for the Galacticos- was consistently making 40 yard runs upfield with 2 defenders beating the #### out of him but would still look silky smooth and lazy once he was on the ball. Won everything. Part of France's golden generation. plus the infamous head-butt.

1.11- Zizou. first video googled with attnetion-grabbing title.

Yes, it was very, very hard to pass on Zidane.  His game in the 2006 QFs against Brazil, where played around with the Selecao like they were a bunch of four year olds, will always live in my memory.  Nobody will ever have a better first touch.  Of that, I am sure.

Love this guy

wow... there are some great picks left- some guys have dropped a bit, IMO. I think Zidane is a pick or two around where I got him, but there a four others jumping to mind that should be higher. I just   me some ziz.

Considered Zizou over the old-timers Puskas/ADS. The top 8 are pretty clear-cut in my mind, although the order is certainly up for debate.

Still a lot of talent available. These first couple of rounds will probably be personal preference more than anything.

ETA: And yes, I considered him as well, but elected against because he's French and a giant dooosh

Zidane has a great header...if he's targeting an opponent and not the ball.

Maldini is a great pick. All-time lock down defender at LB.

Five European cups and 7 Scudettos is pretty impressive. 2000+ world cup minutes is quite a feat too, but he never won the big one.

1.13  Eusebio  --

The Black Pearl/Black Panther is considered one of the greatest strikers of all-time.  He scored 638 goals in 614 matches for Benfica. His speed, athleticism and goal-scoring prowess should make him the ideal spear-head in my squad.

But how would he fair on a rainy day in Stoke?

Eusebio clearly outplayed Pele in the 66 World Cup by all accounts.  Of course, those accounts say that Pele was practically having his leg amputated with horror tackles.

1966 England v Portugal

Throughout the game Eusébio was closely marked by England's defensive midfielder Nobby Stiles, but still managed to score Portugal's only goal from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute, ending yet-to-be broken records of seven consecutive clean sheets and 708 minutes without conceding a goal for the English team. After scoring the penalty, Eusébio went on to catch the ball and saluted Gordon Banks. The goal was not enough to nullify Bobby Charlton's two earlier goals. António Simões had a last-minute chance only for Stiles to make it into a corner. Portugal lost 1–2 and Eusébio famously walked off the pitch in tears, being comforted by both his teammates and opponents. The game is known as the Jogo das Lágrimas (Game of Tears) in Portugal.

Almost took him at 4 if it wasn't for the Cocaine Cowboy

I think Eusebio is now the first non Euro / non South American born player chosen but we still need a non Euro / non South American player who also did not play in those continents for his national team.

My dad says I saw Eusebio play for the old Boston Minutemen back in 1975 but I have no memory of that.  They played at Boston University back then according to wiki.
