All Time Soccer/Football Draft and Tourney (1 Viewer)

Good job, everyone.

I'll be heading home in about 15 minutes.  @Lehigh98 times out at 6PM.  It seems like we're right in his coaching time right now, so I don't know whether to keep the clock running until 11PM tonight or not.  If possible, I'd like to avoid making people go on autoskip early.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of autoskipping people in the first round of a draft, especially one like this where there's no season looming.

Klinsi will start Brolin at GK.  He could cover the width of the goal mouth by just standing there.
His very last appearance before he retired was as a keeper :)

He was arguably a top 10-15 player in the world at 22-23   He had to retire due to fatness at 28.

I mean dear god, he looks like he actually lost some weight in this picture http://c3.thejournal.ie/media/2014/12/brolin-2-752x501.png

The only other player I can link him to is John Hot Plate Williams who had so much talent on the court but damn he could not stay away from a buffet table for the life of him.

He looks kind of like Orson Welles in that picture.

Sorry guys, I thought this was set up to email me if I got a notification but looks like I was wrong.

1.14 - Manuel Francisco dos Santos

a.k.a. "Garrincha (Little Bird)"

a.k.a. "Alegria do Povo (People's Joy)"

a.k.a. "Anjo de Pernas Tortas (Bent-Legged Angel)"

Brazil - Right Winger / Forward

Born with several birth defects: his spine was deformed, his right leg bent outwards and his left leg was six centimeters shorter and curved inwards, none of which impeded his ability to play football at the highest level. A boy with a carefree attitude, he was smaller than other kids his age, with his sister Rosa noticing he was as small as a little bird she started calling him "Garrincha", the north-eastern name for the wren, a little brown bird.

In 1958 and 1962, Garrincha won the FIFA World Cup with the Brazil national team. At the 1962 tournament, with Pelé out injured, he led the team to victory, received the World Cup Golden Ball for player of the tournament, the Golden Boot as leading goalscorer, and was named in the World Cup All-Star Team. In 1994 he was named in the FIFA World Cup All-Time Team. Brazil never lost a match while fielding both Garrincha and Pelé.

Garrincha is renowned for his remarkable ball control, imagination, dribbling skills and feints, and having the ability to create something from nothing. He also possessed a powerful shot with either foot and was a gifted set piece specialist known for free kicks and corners taken with the outside of his foot. However, it was his dribbling skills he was most famous for, a skill he retained throughout his career.

Adored by the Brazilian public due to his innocence, carefree attitude and ability to entertain in making fools of opposing players, Garrincha was referred to as; "Joy of the People". Djalma Santos, his Brazil teammate, stated; "He had a childish spirit. Garrincha was football's answer to Charlie Chaplin."

Examples of his shooting ability are his goals in World Cups against England in 1962 and Bulgaria in 1966. He was also able to turn on himself at top speed and explode at unusual angles, which he used to great effect. The numerous attacks and goal opportunities he generated through individual plays would often end up in an accurate pass to a teammate in a position to score. This occurred in the first two of Brazil's goals in the 1958 World Cup final and the second goal against Spain in the 1962 tournament. He was also an excellent header of the ball despite his relatively short stature. He is one of a few players to have scored direct from a corner, a feat he managed to do 4 times in his career.

Regarded by many as the best dribbler in football history, had (at least) 14 children, and enjoyed a good caipirinha.

Maradona good..

Pele better...

1.15 George Best

Didn't think that he would drop this far, but I will gladly take him here.  Some quotes:

“I think I’ve found you a genius.” – The telegram sent to Manchester United by talent scout Bob Bishop, who discovered a 15-year-old Best playing for Cregagh Boys’ Club.

“The closest I got to him was when we shook hands at the end of the game.” Northampton player Roy Fairfax, who had been marking Best when he scored six goals in an 8-2 FA Cup win for Man Utd in 1970.

"George was unique, the greatest talent our football has ever produced, easily. Look at his scoring record – 137 in 361 league games, and a total of 179 in 466 United matches. That’s phenomenal for a man who didn’t get his share of gift goals that fall to specialist strikers. George nearly always had to beat men to score." - Sir Alex Ferguson

"George inspired me when I was young. He was flamboyant and exciting. I think we were very similar players, dribblers who create moments of magic." - Diego Maradona

“George Best was the greatest player in the world" - Pele

From the man himself:

"In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life."

"I used to go missing a lot... Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World."

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

"If you'd given me the choice of going out and beating four men and smashing a goal in from thirty yards against Liverpool or going to bed with Miss World, it would have been a difficult choice. Luckily, I had both."

My favorite anecdote in Inverting the Pyramid was about a game Garrincha dribbled past the goalkeeper, then dribbled away from the empty net so he could do it again. He still scored, of course.

That story made the fan in me really want to pick him and the manager in me really not want to pick him.

Anyway I see Native here and I'm ready to pick once he does.

Whew. Did not think he would continue this freefall all the way down to me. His role on my squad will be the number 10. Will not let him manage the club finances or arrange friendlies with the other squads. But in his prime, he was devastating.

1.16 Michel Platini, Attacking Midfielder, France & Juventus/St Etienne/Nancy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5XKJZ8PIN0

Michel Platini is widely considered as the greatest midfielder in history of European football and the finest footballer in the Europe during the middle 1980s. He was famous as a leader of “The Magic Sqaure” alongside Alain Giresse, Luis Fernández and Jean Tigana , the group of midfield players that formed the heart of the French national team throughout the 1980s. I had a list of 3 that I would've been happy with any of them. Platini was one. The other two:

1.17 Roberto Carlos, Left Back, Brazil

2.1 Lothar Matthäus, Midfielder, Germany

I'll just post the picks now so Native can go again. Write-ups to follow in a minute.

2.2 Xavi, Spain and Barcelona

Xavi and Platini link up to form a dream midfield that dominates possession. He has 25 trophies to his name, including a World Cup, two Euros, eight La Liga titles and four champions League successes. There may not be a more decorated player in the last 30 years.

“The one who has the ball, is the master of the game.” - Xavi Hernandez

https://youtu.be/45G0egeyK20

"A Puppet Master" Xavi Hernandez is one of the most team decorated footballers of all-time and was one of the most valuable players in history of Spanish football, was the best midfielder in the World in the very late 2000s to the beginning 2010s. He is a key man of the achievement for Barcelona and Spain that meet their golden era, has made more than 180 assists for his club. Xavi is not a style of spectacular and all-round player style but full of intelligent and effectiveness in central midfield area as an indispensable organisor with reliable ball controlling and his ability to find and exploit spaces and made very accurate short passing as an embodiment of Tiki-Taka tactical strategy, having assisted to a lot goals. Xavi won the best player of Euro 2008 tournament plus man of the match in 2009 UEFA Champion league final round.Xavi holds the record most appearances in UEFA Champion League. Xavi was named in UEFA Team of the year five times and FIFPro World XI six times In 2008, Xavi was also voted 5th European footballer of the year. Xavi made around 180 assists in overall career.

Roberto Carlos

“Roberto Carlos is amazing. He’s a brilliant defender, but his biggest strength is his ability to get from box to box all the time. He’s got so much energy. He’s so quick and strong that he’s always making you defend rather than the other way round. And he can be lethal from set pieces too.” - Ryan Giggs
When I was a kid I was a once-every-four-years soccer fan, and while I didn't understand much of what I was watching, Roberto Carlos was one guy who really blew me away. He was always on the ball, clearly one of the most skilled players on the field... but he was a defender!

Left back is going to be a scarce position in this thing. The attacking wingback has been used in Brazil for years but took some time to spread, and even then, most of the great ones played on the right. Getting a player like Roberto Carlos there I think is a good start.

Can your left back do THIS?

Thought it might be too early to take Matthaus with my 2nd pick but guess not.  One of my favorite players of all time.

Lothar Matthäus

"He is the best rival I've ever had. I guess that's enough to define him." - Diego Maradona
The first ever FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991, appeared in more World Cup games than any other player, captained West Germany to a World Cup title. He even won German Footballer of the Year in 1999 at age 38.

One of the complete players of all time, I could probably deploy him anywhere but I'll put him right in the middle of the field where he can captain the team and do a little of everything.

Would've been nice to pick higher and get one of the best-ever forwards, but I love hard-working players who can contribute at both ends and I've got two of the best in Roberto Carlos and Matthaus.

Lothar Matthaus - Top 5 goals

2.2 Xavi, Spain and Barcelona

Xavi and Platini link up to form a dream midfield that dominates possession.
It's going to be really fun watching these teams take shape. Even with all world-class rosters, a pivot like that will be hard to take the ball away from.

2.03 Marco van Basten

After fat Ronaldo I think he's the most complete striker to have played the game.  He could do it all.  He's scored some of the best goals, if not the best goal, of all time.  Three time Ballon d'Or winner.  Couple other guys I want, but can't pass him up.

Thought Xavi might make it back to me at the next turn just because he's less spectacular than a lot of other attacking players.
