2.10 Franco Baresi

Goal scorers are easy to find, but solid defenders are worth their weight in gold. VBD would love this pick.
I researched him. Nice pick.  I found it incredible that 2 of the top 3 defenders in history (according to many lists) were on the same AC Milan team.  I also saw a stat, though it appears to have been disputed by many, that in 140ish games with Baresi and Maldini, AC Milan only allowed 39 goals.  I don't think that can be true, though, can it?  Seems absurd.

I'm going with the assumption that we are going with players at their best.  So for me, I wont' be valuing guys that produced for 15 years as highly as guys that had 5 superstar years.  For instance, Baggio was considered the best player in world (apparently) for a few years and was an absolute stud, but he did have injury and knee problems that kept him from having a super long career.  For the purposes of this, I'll be rolling out with the younger Baggio.
I mostly look at it the same way. The one thing I do value about longevity is that it gives me more confidence that a player was really that good and not just in a good system that took advantage of his abilities. That's also where having both club/country success comes in.

I'm sympathetic to guys like Van Basten or Baggio - they were clearly great players and I don't really hold their injuries against them.

Picking on the ends of a 17 round snake draft is painful. Its like doing a mock draft in the old days on Antsports.

Thanks for the email. I wanted Yashin, but I'm not too sad about getting the guy that has perfected his style.

i need a sweeper keeper:

Manuel Neuer GK

Great pick.  I do think that the well is getting close to dry on the very best goal scorers unless we go back to the Pre-1960 era or into the current era.  Baresi is the greatest defender of all time on club form.  Its kind of weird that intense competition for places in the Italy side has made his international resume thinner than you'd expect, although he was titanic in the 1994 Final even though he hadn't played most of the tournament before.

It sounds about right.  I know they allowed 14 Serie A goals one season and 16 another.  Under Capello, Milan won the league while scoring something like 37 goals.  That's how good that defense was.

I don't think its surprising that best defender lists will cluster with common players though.  Great defenders played on great defenses.

Neuer is an interesting pick. Hard to pick between him and two others that I expect to go soon among discussion for best goalie still playing.

2.xx  Giacinto Facchetti   LB

I'm going to continue to build from the back with Beckenbauer's Italian contemporary Facchetti.  He played in the era of catenaccio so his defensive reputation is unquestioned but he also managed to score 75 goals for all competitions for Inter.  He provides flexibility to play as a wingback in a 5-3-2 or in a more modern LB role.

Here's an appreciation article from These Football Times

Damn it, great pick, I shouldn't have waited...

love the Baresi pick... him, and a couple others were on my revised short list. I'm confident none of them will make it back to me. but if they do.... (insert Michael Owen "yummy-yummy" hand-rubbing goal celebration)

Spectacular pick that I expected to fall.  You and Spartans Rule seem to both be working on getting two-way players early.

If Cryuff is going to be Cryuff, he needs someone to get him the ball where and when he wants it. Xavi is gone so Im going with the next best option

2.13 Andres Iniesta, M, Spain

Guy has some accolades so allow me to cut and paste from wikipedia. Here is an article about him taking home awards over some shlubs named Ronaldo and Messi

Guy is a winner

I really didn't think Xavi and Iniesta would go this early.  Had hoped to pair them with Messi so we could award my team the trophy and save everyone a lot of time.

Hard to beat the Pale Faced Assassin.  Doesn't accumulate stats like some others, but he wins and scores in big matches.

My worry with the Barca guys was being able to surround them with the right complementary talent.

2.14 - Thierry Henry

What's better than having one field player who can use his hands and not get caught? Having two!

Loved watching this guy, could score from anywhere and out of nothing. Part of The Invincibles, won Lige 1, EPL, La Liga, Champions League, EURO Cup and that little World Cup thingy.

He'll fit in nicely opposite Maradona at AML

Almost at "#### it, I'm punting LB" and I haven't even made my second pick. :kicksrock:
That's why my Roberto Carlos pick was so great. :patsselfonback:

I actually had a really absurd plan for left back if I didn't end up with RC. It would've been a terrible idea, but made for fun discussion.

Manos De Dios FC

1.04- Diego Maradona, AM, Argentina

2.14- Theirry Henry, AM, France

3.04- Socrates, M, Brazil

4.14- Alessandro Nesta, CB, Italy

Since you f#####s won't let me have a LB, I'll just take the greatest RB of all time (who also was a part of the AC Milan Defense O' Death for a bit). :coffee:

2.15 - Cafu

Marcos Evangelista de Moraes is rightly known as one of the greatest defenders to have graced the game, making the right-back spot his own, both domestically and for Brazil.

It is difficult to name a trophy that this talented man hasn't won: with two Italian titles, two Italian Super Cups, a Champions League trophy, a UEFA Super Cup and two World Cup victories of 1994 and 2002 to his name.

Although he won the majority of his domestic trophies at Milan, he is quite literally revered at AS Roma, where he is one of only 11 players to have made it into their Hall of Fame.

Cafu's bombing runs along the right flank earned him the nickname Il Pendolino, meaning "the express train". He is also the most-capped Brazilian of all time after making an incredible 142 appearances.

big Cafu fan. nice pick.

####... I have to rethink my shortlist completely- none of these guys are getting back to me.
