All Time Soccer/Football Draft and Tourney (3 Viewers)

Not sure I will be able to do this on an every round basis, but I consider myself to be building a team. There are some serious all time great players left, but Im going to pass on them to pick someone who will fit in perfect with my first two picks.  Anyway, in order to play tiki taka the way that it should be played, you need possession guys, great passers, speed and precision. This guy has all of it including being the only player to have won the Champions League with three different teams. Considered to be one of the greatest midfielders of his generation (according to wilipedia) and hand picked by Pele to be among the 100 greatest footballers:

3.05 Clarence Seedorf, M, Netherlands

Seedorf, like Roberto Carlos, is on my list of players I loved as a kid watching the World Cup despite not understanding what was going on.

3.06  Lilian Thuram  RB

Part of the judging will be a popularity contest that will likely favor more recent players over guys from grainy old black and white films.  Thuram is the best two-way right back I've seen; there probably are some that were more dynamic going forward but we'll have to keep the flanks under control in this tournament.

Thuram was the best player in WC'98 regardless of what the press and FIFA thought.  His accomplishments at the club level are diminished a bit because he played many of his prime years with Parma but even then, he helped them win some silverware in an era when Serie A was undisputedly the best league in the world.

Appreciation article from These Football Times

Thuram is also hurt a bit by being a CB for clubs and a RB for France.  But I agree with you on the World Cup 98.  Even before the semifinal, where he scored his only two international goals, he was my favorite player in the tournament.  That France team was so much more than just Zidane.  He is a personal favorite of mine.

I'll write up more in a bit, but in an effort to move on...

3.04 Socrates, M, Brazil

I had read up on him before when i came across his unique name. So when looking at names for this again, I went and found this;

"Socrates approached football with the intensity and lack of restraint that he brought to every aspect of his life. He drank, he smoked, and he played without shin guards."

Jonathan Wilson said that "Socrates was the brain of Brazil. He might not quite have had the flair of Zico, but he was the central intelligence"

He's the guy you want running things for your MF. He can man the #10 or the #8 spot of the midfield and with Henry and Maradona running off of him, his knack for a through ball would be devastating.

This is the greatest thread ever.  A few observations: I always thought Yashin was named the "Black Octopus"; Ronaldinho is one of the most overrated, non-clutch players ever;  don't sleep on Giuseppe Meazza, & RHE; from a 12 yr old Roma fan's perspective, Falcao was always better than Zico on that '82 squad..he's the one who enabled everyone else to look & play so, well, Brazilian!  "The Engine", without the European hard edges & cogs.  Salutations, fellas...this is a pleasure to peruse, & I shall not muck it up anymore...(Floppo, Conte="SOD"!)
I always thought Roberto Baggio was the most overrated.  You don't win a couple of Balloons without being pretty solid.

If you have the YouTube time, be sure to watch any episode of Football's Greatest featuring a Brazilian from the 70s or 80s.  Odds are that Socrates will be interviewed, and he's always a great quote.

That team was all about Stephane Guivarc’h and his oddly placed apostrophe

1.01 Lionel Messi, CAM, Argentina

2.17 Gianluigi Buffon, GK, Italy

3.01 Patrick Vieira, DM, France

Will add some blah blah blah shortly.
really, really, really wanted to pair Vierira and Zidane. dammit.

####. one of my all time favorites- and hoped he'd drop a few more. great player... in my naivete, I think I preferred him to Zico at the time.

Can anyone near the front of the draft take a PM?  I have to do the pick up kid/commute/make dinner/pretend to care what my wife wants to talk about thing in about 20 minutes.

See, there's so much variance in most "who's the greatest goalkeeper ever" conversations that I went with Didi instead of a goalie with my last pick.
other than Yashin, of course.

yeah- I pretty much agree. as I started to think of more players, I realized I had a GK in my "people I played w/against" category * that I should have drafted much later instead of Lashin Yashin.

I'm open to trades.

*it's totally maybe tony meola.

Ouch, my shortlist went to ####.

picking a favorite. Francesco Totti!

no internet, and can't research, so why not grab one of the best players I have seen live.

Charlton was the BPA on my board and filled an obvious need. More importantly, building my team from the spine out allows me to maintain flexibility in terms of formations and tactics.

Now the ultimate question.  Do I start my round 3 research yet?  I mean, if I learn about them and then get sniped by the aficionados ahead of me, I'll be angry.  But if I don't take the time to research until it's my turn, I'll never have known they existed....

I would have taken Charlton at 3.03, but Ronaldo refused to play next to someone "with that kind of hair". What else can I do?

Reminds me

When I signed Ronaldo in my current fm save I asked him to tutor a kid....

"No, I don't get on with him"

Then he was pissed :lmao:

We've drafted silk, now it's time for some steel.

Looks like most of the top-rated CBs are ball-playing/Libero/sweeper types.  But with so many great offensive talents in the draft, I need an old fashioned man marker who has some familiarity with the dark arts. My pick is a bit less celebrated than some of his contemporaries, but was named best defender in the 82 World Cup, where he famously made Captain Cokehead his *****.

CB -  Claudio Gentile -- Italy

Shockingly, Gentile was never sent off in his career. His black ink is impressive:

Individual[SIZE=small][[/SIZE]edit]

He was voted the top defender in Serie A in 1977, as well.

3.9 Roy Keane - DM IRE

Code:
Few men encompass the phrase "fighting spirit" as much as Roy Keane,
who became a talisman for Manchester United during the most successful period
in the club's history.

His duels with fellow great Patrick Vieira are legendary,
as are his crunching tackles and short fuse. Behind all the aggression,
however, was a player of immense quality, with Sir Alex Ferguson acknowledging him
as the greatest player he has ever coached.

Under his leadership, United won seven Premier League titles,
four FA Cup titles, and a Champions League.
He later won a Scottish League title and Cup with Celtic,
as well as winning 66 Republic of Ireland caps.
