All Time Soccer/Football Draft and Tourney (1 Viewer)

Does anybody in the first 7 picks want to take a list of my next few names just in case the draft snakes back?

Damn you for stealing Figo!

Gaetano Scirea, defender extraordinare

Scirea is one of only five players in European football history to have won all international trophies for football clubs recognized by UEFA and FIFA. Scirea is also one of only nine players in the history of the European football that won all three major UEFA football competitions. He played for the Italian national team for more than a decade, during which he was an undisputed member of Italy's defensive line-up, keeping Franco Baresi out of the national team for four years, until he retired in 1986. Scirea became a World Champion with the 1982 FIFA World

I guess I can't keep picking defenders so I'll go with a guy who can fill a variety of midfield roles and help me in the popularity contest aspect of the tournament.

Steven Gerrard   LA Galaxy

4.13 Johan Neeskens, M, Netherlands

"He was worth two men in midfield" - Sjaak Swart, teammate
A key player for the Ajax and Netherlands teams of the 70s and later Barcelona, Neeskens is another guy who fits my mold of hard-working and well-rounded. He was a fierce tackler who could press high up the pitch as well as join the attack.

I now have four players - two in the middle and one on each flank - who will contribute a lot at both ends. Should allow to pick some more specialized guys with my next few picks.

Great pick. Was on my shortlist

You son of a #####.

Last round during the lovers quarrel about who to take; Socrates, Cannavaro or _____________ both of us agreed that all three wouldn't make it back. Yet, one fell and fell and then came the trying to trade up as he kept falling and he still fell, all the way to Tasker, just for him.

4.14 Alessandro Nesta, CB, italy

I'll let @Steve Tasker write up for this guy

***BREAKING NEWS***

We have agreed to terms with Eva Carneiro - Gibraltar - Phyiso.

She will be seeing to the fitness of the lads, and other duties that may be assigned.

I may not be able to sleep tonight what with the anticipation of the weeping, gnashing of teeth and cries of "genius, the lad's a bit special" sure to follow my next two picks.

Though the tequila might help I guess.

Nesta was the last high defender in my list and my next pick.  I had him and Cannavaro about even.  Good job.  I thought he may make it back.

If Buffon had gone before my last pick I was going to take Cannavaro and Nesta as a pair at the turn too.

Not really sure what to say other than that he was a pretty player to watch.  Not often you hear that said about a CB.  It's a shame he was injured before the 2006 final, though he was an integral part of the team.  I always thought he was one of the best at reading the game from central defense, and his athleticism and ball skills were always superb for the position.  He was always good for a timely interception.  Despite cutting his international career short and retiring after 2006, I always found it telling that the Italian coaches begged him to come back for the 2008 Euros and 2010 Cup.  They could've used him.  He was an ageless wonder, still featuring regularly for Milan well into his mid-30s.  Class player all around.

My old vs new quandary is still there, so I'm going to hold off on it and actually hope one (not both, they're one-position only types) is taken on the turn.

In the meantime, I'll take a goalie who is often mentioned at the tippy top of "best ever" conversations, but may have a somewhat diminished rep because his career dropped off a bit after age 31. But he's a guy I thought would have gone when Neuer and Buffon went and who I thought would have gone before them, though as I said before, goalkeeping is subjective. But I gave him a long look at 3.3 because I have a sneaking feeling modern players will get more love in this than the older ones. I'm thrilled he's available at 4.15.

4.15- GK Iker Casillas, Spain, Real Madrid

The most successful goalkeeper of all time, Iker Casillas has won five La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, four Spanish Super Cups, three Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, one FIFA Club World Cup, one Intercontinental Cup, one World Cup and two European Championships. He is the only goalkeeper to captain a team to win the Champions League, World Cup and European Championships, with Didier Deschamps and Franz Beckenbauer the only outfield players to have achieved the feat.

He is Real Madrid’s second all-time appearance holder, behind Raul, but he transferred to Porto in the summer, moving away from Real for the first time in his career. He was named the IFFHS Best Goalkeeper on the World for five consecutive seasons, the most of any player in history, and has won 163 caps for Spain making him the most capped player in the countries history and the most capped active player in the world.

If someone could bump the updated list of picked players that would be cool if you did.  Whose up?

I'll give it a few more minutes, but it's been 12 hours now since the last pick so think it's probably OK?  Speak up if that seems off to anyone.

Ok...just wanted to be sure.

4.17 (#68) Luis Suarez, F, Uruguay

5.01 (#69) Kun Aguero, F, Argentina

Might be too early for both, but I had Bergkamp, Del Piero, Suarez and Aguero lined up as complimentary tricksy partners for Messi.  We already know the general idea works and I like Aguero more than Neymar.  Should be an assist fest.

Open to hearing who'd have been a better fit once Bergkamp and Del Piero were off though.

Not a lot to say about the picks since everyone's probably familiar with them already, but one tidbit I did find was that Aguero's goals/minutes record is the best ever in the EPL.

I'm told there were forwards playing the sport before 2000ad.

eta: I think both kun and suarez are pretty great players though... but just saying.

Seriously... who would you pick in terms of quick and skilled players that share the ball?  I'm sure I've missed some, but I wasn't interested in a traditional center forward type.
a couple jump to mind immediately, more would if I start looking around. not going to share until after the draft is done. serious drafter businesstm.

:coffee:

Nice picks with Suarez and Aguero. If this thing is a pure popularity contest, can't argue with either.

Still unsure on whether to go with the old guy or modern guy with the next pick. Those picks don't help my conundrum.
