Allergy meds (1 Viewer)

What's everyone's go-to allergy med?

I have terrible allergies. Allergic to almost everything except cats and dogs. Last year, my allergies were the worst I've ever had. This year, the season is just starting and I can already feel my head starting to explode.

I've tried Claritin and it doesn't seem to do anything for me. I want something that won't put me to sleep, but will take care of Spring allergies.

Anyone have one that they swear by? Ones they stay away from? I know of Zyrtec and Allegra but I haven't tried them yet.

Claritin is fine for me as long as I'm taking it proactively instead of waiting for the symptoms to flare up

Once the symptoms get a hold of me, I'm done, regardless of what I take.

How often do you take it? And when?

I try to remember to take a 24 hour, every evening, before bed.

I am in the same boat, (take it in the mornings though). It seems to work best for me if I do not take them all year long like I had in the bast... I try to do it seasonally now.

P.S. I need to pick up some generic claritin soon-like.

Yep... me too. Generic Loretadine (Target Brand) every morning between April and September-ish. Works well for me.

I have horrible allergies.

I rotate between allegra, zyrtec, and claritin on a doc's recommendation that over time you will see diminishing returns sticking with just one.

Works well enough but I get steroid shots a few times a year when the pills do nothing.

I switched from Claritin (loratadine) to Zyrtec (cetirizine) a few years back. The Zyrtec is faster acting for me and I was taking it daily even in the winter (dust). I have cut back recently just to see if I need it anymore as I am not a huge fan of taking pills just for the sake of it.

I would recommend Zyrtec, but go with the generics. I believe that benedryl was a first generation anti-histamine, the others are 2nd generation.

Not sure how old, but Consumer Reports wrote something up: https://www.consumerreports.org/health/resources/pdf/best-buy-drugs/Antihistamines.pdf

take the allegra 180mg twice a day if you don't want to be drowsy. the zytrec 10mg 1 po twice a day would also be effective but more likely to make you sleepy, with a sedation rate of 14%.

with severe symptoms, not uncommon to use high doses of zytrec, up to 40mg.

Zyrtec all the way. Claritin is of minimal benefit for me. Never tried Allegra.

My wife gets the Rite-Aid or CVS brand when it goes on sale. I take 1 every night just before bed. No drowsiness issues at all, and I truthfully take it pretty much year-round. Ironically, my wife works for J&J and gets a huge discount on the brand name stuff, but it's STILL cheaper to buy the generic when it's on sale.

I take a Benadryl knock off every night before bed. Seems to keep everything at bay. I have spring allergies, but also some weird itch thing.i take it every day for the itch thing. I bought a 4 year supply from Costco 2 years ago.

I've taken just about everything mentioned above. Clarinex D is what seems to work best for me. Allegra was probably the next best.

The best thing I have encountered though, is the SinusRinse squirt bottle (similar to a neti pot, but in squirt bottle form) that I found about on these very forums. I went from taking a pill every single morning (year-round) to only taking one maybe 3 or 4 times a year, when needed. I do keep some Flonase nasal spray on hand, because that's the only thing that will stop sneezing attacks if one hits me. Pollen season used to give me a sinus infection every year. Now, I may have a slight case of itchy eyes or a few sneezes, but that's it. I use the Sinus Rinse every single day, after showering. It honestly has changed my life.

Yup, I know people look at me cockeyed when I talk about it, but the Neti Pot has been a godsend for me. I don't even have to use it very often anymore, but anytime I mow the yard or work outside, I'll use it preemptively. It is astonishing to see what comes out of your sinus passages after a day of heavy yard work. To think that I just lived with that stuff inside my cavities in hopes that {insert allergy med here} would take care of it sickens me.

And look, I'm the last guy to preach natural medicine. But if you've never tried nasal irrigation and you suffer from allergies, you really have nothing to lose. My neti pot was like $15 vs hundreds of dollars spent on allergy meds.

I have to admit, those things scare me a little. Looks like a face enema.

it did take a little getting use to, but after I figured out how much it helped me, it became just a normal part of my morning routine

I would liken it, at first, to the feeling of getting water in your nose when you are swimming. After a week or two, it won't bother you at all.

Get the allergy tests to find out what you are allergic to and how allergic you are. Then start immunotherapy (Allergy shots) Almost finished with mine and wish I did it earlier.

I take a Zyrtek every morning. I switch to Claritan for a month or so every year just to try to mix things up. Zyrtek seems to work best though so that is what I use in Spring and Summer.

I use a Sinus Rinse bottle every evening. The pills and sinus wash seem to be working.

What is a "sinus rinse"?

Yeah. I think this is my next step. I used to get them when I was younger but living in Houston my allergies weren't that bad. Now that I'm back up north, they seem to have come back with a vengeance.

Why wouldn't your next step be the very cheap option of nasal irrigation? I'd try that before spending gobs of money with an allergist.

Mainly because I've done it in the past and I know it works.

Nasonex (spray) is my go-to. since i started back in January, i think i've sneezed maybe a half dozen times total in the last three months.

prior to that, i would have two or three sneezing fits per day, where i'd sneeze 15 to 20 times in succession. watery eyes. runny nose like a faucet in the aftermath.

Terrible (particularly but not exclusively seasonal) allergies. A Claritin every morning, just about year round, paired with the semi-regular does of Nasonex or Flonase is what I've sort of settled on over the years. Works ok, but not perfect I've tried the generic versions of Claritin/Zyrtec etc, but have found that some of them just don't quite work as well as the name brands. A friend who seems to know about these things told me that while the active meds in the pills are typically the same, sometimes the generics skimp on the stuff that helps the meds get absorbed into your body. As a result. they often don't work as well as the name brands. It's probably not an issue for everybody, but if you're not getting relief from the generics you might try using the name brand for a while and see if you notice a difference. I have definitely found that taking the pills regularly and, most importantly, in advance of the real bad symptoms seems to maximize their effectiveness.

I've tried the neti pot and the sinus rinse mentioned above. I think I'm just too stupid to figure out how to use these right. I've heard from a lot of people how well they work, but I always just feel like I'm about to drown and my nose feels more plugged after than it did before. I might try again this spring though. Some people I think of as very smart swear by these things so I feel like there must be something to them.

One other note: Last year was one of the worst years for allergies I've had in probably a decade. My understanding is that the level of pollens spit out by trees etc has a lot to do with the weather the previous summer. Summer 2012 here was crazy hot and dry. Way more than normal. Apparently that hot, dry weather makes the trees etc think they're dying and ramps up pollen production for the next spring. Sort of a "seed the earth before I die" type of response. Last summer was a lot better, so hopefully this year's allergy season won't be quite as bad.

take zyrtec and get a prescription for dymista nose spray. also look into getting shots to cure them over time.also use the neti pot.

These things are so awesome. I use them when I've been working around dust (cutting the grass, drywall, cleaning, etc). As some said, you'd be amazed at what comes out of your nose...I FINALLY got my wife to try it, and now she's hooked. She's pregnant, so she can't take a lot of meds, but she can do these all she wants.

They're pretty awesome, and dirt cheap. I will admit that I should probably disinfect my bottle more. I'm not big on that or using sterilized water. I just fill 'er up with warm tap and go.

I used to use tap water as well, until I read an article about a local woman that was in the hospital with a, and I quote, "BRAIN-EATING AMOEBA" after using tap water in her neti-pot  I now just pick up a couple gallons of distilled water at the grocery store each time I go by there. I run a sink full of hot water before I get in the shower, prepare the sinus rinse bottle and let it sit in the sink. Warms it to the perfect temp, and no amoeba!

Pretty much a claritan everyday. I think its not working until I forget to take it. Then I realize it is when I get hit with allergies.

I went out and bought Zyrtec last night. The sinus pressure along with the runny nose and puffy eyes were to the point where I thought I was going to have to go to Urgent Care to get a shot.

I could feel it start working in about an hour and I have been feeling pretty good since. This stuff is awesome for me.

If you already have the sinus pressure, get the Sinus Blaster... and prepare to be grossed out.

I do similar.

But only with Allegra and Zyrtec. Claritin has never done a thing for me.

Helps with most stuff. Though, my main issue is a ####ed up left sinus that grows polyps. Already have had 2 surgeries and likely will have another in the next year.

Me also except I'm always rotating Allegra D & Clariton.

Most OTC options have already been listed but if your looking for something more long term, I have heard that consuming locally grown honey can really help. This would be most effective if you're allergic to pollen. Honey is loaded with pollen, and local honey is loaded with pollen from your own surrounding enviroment. The idea is that as you consume more, your body will start to build an immunity to the pollen.

Interesting. Zyrtec was working great for Spring allergies, but it seems to have no impact on ragweed and the Fall allergies.

I use a combo of Claritin and Singulair. My main issue was post-nasal drip, which I think the Singulair has helped cut down on.

can't help you, claritin (generic from costco) is my saviour.

also use nasal sprays sparingly if i need to sleep and can't breathe through the nose. just don't use all the time or they lose effectiveness IIRC.

My daughter and I get hit by allergies each spring and fall. We've used Zyrtec for years now and it works wonders. this year I was offered a free sample of Clartiin and much like you it did nothing for me..

Zyrtec can make you sleepy, but since it is a 24 hour medicine we take it right before bed.

By winter when I stop using it because my allergies are over I miss the sound sleep I get from it :kicksrock:

Anyone have one that they swear by? Ones they stay away from? I know of Zyrtec and Allegra but I haven't tried them yet.

Wait. Zyrtec is 24 hours? I did not know this. I usually take it in the morning before work and it doesn't knock me out like Benadryl, but I can feel a wave of tiredness hit me. I may have to try taking it before bed.
