Already dropped Martin...done or not? (1 Viewer)

I pulled the trigger and dropped Martin based on numerous reports he is done. Now he's talking like he is day to day. Not that he was helping me much, but am I about to live to regret that quick drop? Geez!

Speaking Tuesday, Doug Martin said his shoulder injury is "not necessarily season ending," and that his "range of motion has improved."
It's unclear if Martin is waiting for a second opinion, or if the team has simply decided to see how he responds to rest and rehab. Either way, he's not going to play Thursday, and is doubtful, at best, for Week 9.

I am not sure what to do.

Martin was putting up RB2 numbers, even in that offense. He was absolutely worth having on your roster, anybody who says he wasn't doing anything all season is just plain wrong, and needs to go back and check the stats. There is a serious difference between not living up to expectations and not being valuable.

I hate to drop him in case he does come back later in the season...but I'd hate to hold him and not make a claim on Vereen or Andre Brown or James or whoever, only to have him land on IR.

looks like one of those decisions where no matter which side you choose, you'll end up regretting it

I'm holding. This is very odd, but my gut tells me that he'll be back.

Original report sounds like it could have been a knee-jerk.

I just hope that, if he is put on IR, they announce it prior to Thur night's game. I'd hate to have him frozen on my roster leading up to the weekend games, knowing he's a lame duck.

I'm willing to risk holding him overnight tonight, and tomorrow night, then say they announce IR before the game on Thur being able to drop him and scavenge a free agent lottery ticket somewhere.

He wont be playing this week... Right?

BTW who reported he was out for the season. I want to know so We can publicize how effing bad he is. Useless pos.

Check out Stephania Bell on ESPN's Fantasy Focus podcast today (Tuesday). She said unless it's a complete tear, labrum injuries are rarely season enders, especially for RBs (who neither need to throw like QBs nor reach up to catch passes like WRs). Now, she may have been going off incomplete information, or she may just be wrong, but some here seem to be assuming he needs surgery and the Bucs are merely holding off on announcing it, and I'm not sure that's the case at all.

This is causing me much difficulty as well, particularly as we are deep in bye weeks. My bench is stacked with great WRs, Jordan Cameron ( just agreed trade where I get Moreno for him as I have only one fit RB available this week in Bernard ), Forte on bye and another injured RB in Murray.

Next week I'm gonna need to pick up a QB for Staffords bye, and now a TE as I've traded Cameron and J Thomas is on a bye.

There just ain't room for all these people on my bench and the Martin issue completely muddies the situation. I had initially factored in dropping him 2 days ago with that initial report and now nobody seems to know what the deal is.

Can anyone give an educated guess as to when we might find out a more definitive answer on how long he may be out for ?

Doug Martin insists he's not out for the season with his shoulder injury.
"No," he said when asked if the injury might end his second NFL campaign. "Right now, I'm doing treatment on it with the trainers and taking it day by day and seeing how it feels." Torn labrums are tricky injuries because the best course of action isn't always definitive like it would be with a torn ACL or broken bone. Martin is trying a rest-and-rehab regimen before making any decisions on surgery. "It's definitely gotten better," he said. "And my range of motion has increased day to day." Martin's left arm remains in a sling and the Bucs remain tight-lipped. For now, we're just considering him out indefinitely. Oct 23 - 8:08 AM

Despite the insistence his season isn't over, I'm dropping. It's week 8. Most leagues have a regular season that ends in wk. 13 or 14. Maybe he returns in week 11? Just guessing. But if he wasn't too effective before doesn't it stand to reason he'll be even less so with a bad shoulder? Wouldn't he be susceptible to reinjury or to a different injury from either favoring it or being unable to break his fall, etc? If someone gets value from him down the road, more power to them I guess, but fortune favors the bold and missing out on the Helus, Ivorys, and Andre Browns that are out there for a guy who wasn't doing great and is now surrounded by question marks and is on a team in disarray to me isn't sharkish.

Also remember all the stuff last year about MJD insisting he wasn't done for the season? Totally different injury but still there is the similar refusal to rule out a comeback, similar optimistic "I'm feeling better/doing better" statements, and ta da...nothing. MJD never came back. And being back in week 16 or 17 doesn't help in FF.

He's done for 2013. Schiano is living in a fantasy saying that he'll be fine 'because he doesn't need to raise his arm to run the ball'. What an idiot that guy is.

I avoided the circus and dropped Martin this morning for Andre Brown. I'll let someone else waste a roster spot for the rest of the season.

I'd rather have Brown, Vereen, or Zac Stacy, and at least one of those are probably available on most league's waiver wires. Even at 100%, he won't be much better than any of those backs, but he will almost certainly not be playing fully healthy again this year.

i own him in a couple leagues ....

In the league that I am struggling , do to him and a few other devastating injuries , I dropped him for immediate help in order to hope turn the season around.

In the league I am in 1st place I'm holding on to him , deeper roster .... might be useful if a miracle happens ( his health is just one factor in TB)

This is why this board can be dangerous. Complete uninformed posts. Nothing to back the statement, and a shot to Schiano to make the post even more unworthy.

Even if this could be true, right now, it is NOT. THe original news is false. That is FACT. Whether or not they decide to put him on IR would be more for reasons like "seasons over, losing record" or "Lets not get him anymore injured... longterm protection."

I'm just sayin' tired of the "hate" for players because they play for a crappy team, or they haven't performed up to their billing. And yes we all know Schiano is a d-bag, but he wants to win, so keeping hope out for the Hamster is him hoping he can have the second best offensive weopon on the team available.

BTW, Martin was ranked 13th in my league for PF... so yeah not top 5... but he was a darn good 2nd tier RB.

Just sayin.
:lmao: You'll see. Go ahead and hang onto a guy with a torn labrum. :lmao:
I will considering I have myself backed up on my fantasy teams. It is called good drafting. If Hamster can come back in week 11-12 and produce at a 13th RB level, I will take that as my #2 RB.

Meanwhile people who have good depth are grabbing Martin with the possibility to have a starting RB who averages 20+ touches a game.

now thats LOL.

He will (should he actually play) be twice as good as he has been this season? I don't see how on the Bucs.

I'm to spiteful to cut him. He helped kill two redraft teams of mine after committing the second overall pick on him. Last thing I could bare is to see him getting picked up for peanuts and sitting around watching him lead another team to victory. No thanks. My ship sinks with the captain on board.

another bust. glad I avoided this fools gold

so far the top busts of the year are spiller/martin/trent/rice/roddy/amendola/Sjax

Yeah according to Dr Andrews....

A damaged labrum is at risk for a more serious injury with every impact.
What a useless post.

A completely healthy labrum is also at risk for injury with every impact.

If you hit anything hard, it will be at risk for injury.

It's at an increased chance for further injury. Big difference. You think he can take 20+ carries on a bad shoulder? If he had lines like 25 carries for 47 yds you think he will suddenly be more effective? A

You don't understand. It means that he risks even more damage because of the existing injury. See Jerry Rice who came back from an ACL tear too soon and then because of weakness in the knee, cracked the patella the 1st week back.

it doesnt make any sense for them to play martin at this point. i dont know if the GM is in jeopardy... but he should have stepped in already and put an end to this nonsense and IR'd martin

Is there even a timetable for this type of injury? Assuming he does NOT have surgery and simply rehabs the injury, what's a likely number of weeks for that to take?

If it's 6-8 weeks (I have no idea), then even though he could be back for the end of the season, might as well cut the guy.

He was more than effective enough to want on your roster, if starting.

I wish Andre Brown, Vereen, or Stacy were available in my league. My fellow owners are much too savvy for that, however.

<--- 5-2 with Martin as 2nd overall pick, starting him every week other than the bye week.

His worse production out of the first three weeks was 108 yards from scrimmage. Had a down (8 point?) week 4 when Glennon first game on. Then 91 yards from scrimmage in week 6. Finally 50+ yards from scrimmage in the first half before injury in week 7. If that kills your teams...your teams sucked.

I dumped him as well, and I'm not looking back. I picked up Ben Tate in his place. I figure best case for Martin is he's back week 9, then you'd have to be crazy to start him that week anyway, and I'd always wonder if he would reinjure it. I'd rather start someone like McGahee (yikes) than rely on him "maybe" making it through a game

So sad that actually had to be explained to him. But not surprising.

I'm hanging on, but also picking up Mike James. I think it depends on your situation. My team has a 3 game lead on my division and I have the roster space to stash.

He's dumb as a rock. Why would he? There's a reason most athletes go to Andrews and not Warrior.

Look, the MRI reports it was a full tear. The labrum is made up of cartilaginous tissue, which has poor blood supply and thus poor healing capabilities. Basically, this injury will not heal on its own without surgical repair. Now, Martin may not have extreme symptoms with his injury. In that case, physical therapy in order to regain his range of motion might get him back on the field by the end of the season....but, this will only be the case if the guy has no set backs...otherwise forget it. Dr. Andrews comment was in reference to a partial tear, because In that scenario, every hit or stretch on that partially torn cartilage (labrum) risks further micro tears of that tissue which would eventually lead to a complete tear. It is my understanding that he already has a complete tear. And, no matter what, he will need surgery to repair the damaged labrum. I think the coach and Martin are making poor decisions right now in how to deal with this injury. Martin risks delaying his recovery for this injury all the way into the 2014 season. If he truly has a complete tear, he should be put on IR, have the surgical repair and begin rehabilitation so that he will be ready to play at full strength next season. This is opposed to him trying to go all He-Man so that he can come back for a game or two at the end of the season, all at the price of risking further complications and the cold hard truth that he will need surgery in the off-season to repair this full tear.

Coach Schiano = Coach Kilmer from Varsity Blues in this scenario...

Sidney Rice played through a torn labrum in 2011. He missed 2 weeks because of the injury. His first game back he had 8 catches for over 100 yards. He went on to play about 10 games and the shoulder was never a issue. He took big hits on it and never missed time because of his shoulder. His season was cut short later after he had two concussions in like 3 weeks. After the season he actually had surgery done on both shoulders.

Sometimes players can play through torn labrums and sometimes they can't but right now the Bucs and Martin are both saying he'll be back which leads me to believe his injury is on less severe side. Also, Dwight Howard played through one this year in basketball and played effectively.

The thing is that if they do decide he can play through the injury it might not actually keep him out that long. IF they thought even without surgery he was going to miss 6-8 weeks then they would likely just put him on IR.

I think next week is a big one for Martin as they should get a better idea if his injury is improving. Right now it wouldn't shock me if Martin went on IR next week but it also wouldn't shock me if he played NEXT week.

It makes no sense for him to come back and play for an 0-6 team. I wouldn't be surprised if he could play through but why make him?

He was what ... about Trent Richardson level numbers before he got hurt? I'm about ready to drop Trent Richardson, and he's healthy.

Dwight Howard can't be compared with a pro football running back...it's apples and oranges with the amount of stress and direct trauma the shoulder goes through in a professional football player...plus, the mechanism of injury is completely different when comparing Dwight and Doug...and it's hard to compare Sidney rice with Martin either, due to the fact that Martin goes through much more "damage" as a running back than a WR...that said, I stated that if Martin has no pain/symptoms and is without a setback, he could be back out on the field this season. But, I will reiterate, his labrum is not going to heal on its own and he will be at risk for further complications until it is repaired. It just doesn't make sense for the guy to try and rush to get back out on the field to a team that is 0-6..dislocating your shoulder is one of the most painful injuries out there, and having a torn labrum only increases the risk of that happening, location dependent of the tear, but still a reality. Sidney Rice had his injury in the preseason and had a whole season ahead of him as well as a relatively symptom-free injury. At the end of the day, Rice had to get surgery. But, he seems like he has some kind of underlying connective tissue problem....he's had surgery on his knee, hip, both shoulders...most of these defects were found because Rice was "sore" in those areas or hurt during practice, as opposed to Martin who hurt his in a traumatic nature. At the end of the day, I guess I'm just speculating like everyone else, but I will say from a medical standpoint, if the MRI report is accurate, he will be better off in the long run in his young career getting the surgery now vs risking further damage to his shoulder.

Because they are paying him a lot of money and RBs already have a limited shelf life in the NFL. If the joint can be protected from additional injury and surgery can be delayed to the offseason, then he'll play. Ben Tate played with 4 broken ribs and plans to play after the bye.

I would not be surprised to see Martin back before week 12.

Ribs get played through all the time, a torn labrum is a soft tissue injury that can be made worse if it's played through. If I was a Bucs fan I would be pissed if they had him play.
