AMC Theaters CEO Open To Allowing Texting In Some Theaters!! (1 Viewer)

"In a bid to attract younger, smartphone savvy consumers, Aron said he was open to making some theaters texting and mobile device-friendly."

and in the process lose people like me who want to go to a movie theater to you know...watch a movie.

P.S. I'm smartphone savvy so I think what he really means is that he wants to attract rude smartphone savvy consumers.

Haven't been to a movie theater in over a decade so I don't care but I don't think it is a good idea cause it annoys people and nowadays you get shot when you annoy people.

Meh.

Would you have a certain section for texting?

That’s one possibility. What may be more likely is we take specific auditoriums and make them more texting friendly

#### those spoiled entitled Millennials who can't go 2 minutes without looking at their device.

Nothing more annoying today than texting/talking on your phone in a movie and all these morons holding up cellphones video taping footage in a concert they will never watch again. Live the moment morons.

Not a Millenial here but I've seen plenty of old ####s on their phones as well.

Nice job. Just what we need, more millennial bashing and more political threads!

Just waiting for the old man circle jerk to show up in here now. Should be any minute.

Why wouldn't millennial bashing be warranted here?

Why would you bring politics up unless you wanted it to go in that direction?

Put them in an upper corner so I don't have to see the glow from their phones.

First thought was that it sucks but I barely get to the movie theaters once a year anymore anyway.

Second thought was that's probably why they're willing to piss off my demographic in order to attract the younger demographic that goes to the movies three times every month.

Third thought was that I'm not sure how well it actually targets them since the only people that I've actually ever seen texting during a movie have all been older.

It's also worth mentioning that the comments section of that article is basically a bunch of millennials saying this is a terrible idea.

I remember reading articles about how lame and lazy Generation X was from Baby Boomers in the 90's.

Now, Generation X is complaining about these lazy,  texting,  entitled Millennials.

Yeah....it's just fun busting on them. Anyway I see plenty of people my age being outright doosh bags in the movies and concerts with their phones. In fact it is mostly 40 somethings.

But this texting in movies would seal the deal of me never going back. However I go to a local Regal theater which is staunchly against it. My fear is though once one company allows it the other feels they will lose business because of it. It's ridiculous.

Why would you pay money to go to a movie only to sit and text throughout a movie. What a joke. And no way is this going to fly over well IMO. It's a horrible idea.

Old news. The day after this was proposed, it was shot down: http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2016/04/15/amc-ditches-plan-allow-texting-theaters/83074118/

AMC ditches plan to allow texting in theaters

AMC Theatres is changing the script on plans to allow moviegoers to text in the theater.

The movie theater chain said Friday it will scrap plans to allow some theater patrons to text during movies, a move its CEO had said it considered to attract more millennials.

"We have heard loud and clear this is a concept our audience does not want," said AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron said in a statement.

NO TEXTING AT AMC. Won't happen. You spoke. We listened. Quickly, that idea has been sent to the cutting room floor. pic.twitter.com/JR0fo5megR

AMC's about-face follows an interview Aron gave to Variety, where he suggested making some theaters friendlier to moviegoers who want to use their smartphones while watching a movie.

I go to the movies quite frequently and it's almost always a great experience.  The screens are huge, projection is fantastic, and the sound is outstanding.  While tickets aren't $5 anymore, paying $12'ish doesn't really bother me since that's just about normal inflation.  There's tons of concession options and many theaters have free refills for popcorn and soda.  Way better now than when I was a kid.

The long national nightmare has ended!

I'm in the theater business. These types of asinine comments hurt all theatres, even though it was retracted. So dumb.

The movie studios do it too. Lots of dummies out there.

Movie theaters are nicer and provide a better experience than ever. Yes, even better than your home theatre.

I love going to the movies. I expect there to be other people there,  so I expect someone there to make an annoying noise occasionally.

Theaters are great,  seats are great.  Sound is great.

Just nothing in the theaters worth watching.

We love going to movies. I don't understand why somebody texting could ever possibly bother another human. Talking on the phone is one thing, but somebody punching away at their phone (provided it's on mute) doesn't phase me at all. Total get off my lawn thing.

Agreed.  We love our local dollar theater. $1.50-$2 per ticket, we bought the refillable popcorn bowl in January, so $4 for a large bowl that gets us through the flick.  We do bring in water because we don't drink soda and the prices for drinks are too high.

But if they allowed texting the glow would probably be too annoying to go back.

It's the distraction. Nothing like a glowing 10-15 sq. inch screen of bright light in a pitch black room.

I don't buy this for a second.

My home theater is a much better experience than any movie house.

More comfortable seat. Not surrounded by talking coughing strangers. If I miss some actor's mumbled line, I can back up and hear it again, then give up and turn on subtitles for a few seconds. If I need to go to the bathroom, I can pause it. If I do get a phone call or a text, I can pause it. If I want food, I can have whatever I want.

The sound is clearer and better balanced. The picture is crisper.

And it's so much cheaper. $13 a ticket, for two people I can cook a dinner and have a bottle of wine for the cost.

All you have is a bigger screen. And some home theaters, the screens fill almost as much as your vision. Sure, it's not 25 feet across, but, I'm not sitting 40 feet away from it.

Really, all a theater is is some big living room open to the public where you're herded in and forced to sit still and watch some glowing screen.

(Also, at home, i can also freely fondle my girlfriend and try to persuade her into movie head. I'm guessing you frown upon that kind of behavior at your place)

I agree. I love the movies now. The new reserved reclining seats are amazing. Sound and picture top notch. And concessions if you get the refill bucket of popcorn is not crazy (I bring my own bottled water and candy in that I paid less than a buck for). Even so....the new concession options are much better than when I was a kid.  Regal rewards are great. I average a free drink, popcorn and movie almost every month.

The movies are fun to go to with your kids. No doubt. And summer time we probably go to 3-4 movies a month. So when I saw that article I was like WTF. Really?

Took my 11 year old daughter to see Dory last week. $35.00 for tickets, two drinks and a small candy for her.

Prices are pretty outrageous but this theater was one of those ones that you could reserve your seats.  So you tend to get a little better behaved clientele when people pay that much for a ticket.  The screen and sound system in there was just off the hook Amazing.

I'm glad AMC voted down any notion of allowing texting in a theater

I've grown to hate the theater experience. There are almost always people talking or texting, or they bring infants, or they're coughing the whole time, or eating loudly. Going to movies just reminds me that I hate almost everyone.
