American Horror Story: Hotel (Season 5) (2 Viewers)

Not sure what I think about it. It almost seems to me like the scene with Ben, Vivian and Violet standing on the porch, contented to have driven out the new family, was like the original ending they came up with for a series finale, instead of a season one. Seems like they tacked on that last bit with Constance and the psycho child after they found out they got picked up for another season, as if they didn't really have a new plot thread laid out, and just tossed something together.

Looks like everything was planned.http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/12/22/american-horror-story-ryan-murphy-season-finale/SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE SEASON FINALE OF AMERICAN HORROR STORY!!!!! I’m not sure there’s another show on TV that would have the guts to kill off its lead characters and that’s what makes AHS‘ finale such an exhilarating shocker. In the end, Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott) joined his dead wife Vivien (Connie Britton) and dead daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga) in the afterlife once vengeful ghost-stress Hayden (Kate Mara) hung him from the house’s balcony. (If you were wondering what Ryan Murphy was alluding to in last week’s Q&A, about “the most shocking scene we’ve ever done,” this is the moment he was talking about.) Plus, Constance (Jessica Lange) ended up with yet another baby who appears to be a deviant killer. EW talked to Ryan Murphy exclusively about the FX series’ twisty (and twisted) climax. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The prologue seemed to tease that the house pulled the Harmons to it. Was that what you were implying?RYAN MURPHY: I don’t know if they were targeted. I don’t think the Internet site had any supernatural pull to it… although that would have been hilarious. I thought it was two things: it was house porn because I think that house really is extraordinary. And also I think there’s always that allure in American lives of the fresh start, moving West, starting fresh.EW: Seeing that Vivien was prepared to leave made it even more tragic.RM: I loved how they both played that scene.EW: My favorite scene in the entire episode was when they’re scaring the family; it reminded me of Beetlejuice.RM: Oh really? I never thought of that.EW: But my truly favorite moment was when she guts him and then he shoots her in the head and they’re both like, “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do this.”RM: Don’t you think every married couple in America will stand up and cheer at that scene? I know for Connie and Dylan that was the thing they loved doing the most.EW: I did worry about how that will affect the Rubber Man suit.RM: You know what? That’s true. That probably is the end of Rubber Man after that scene because the suit was ruined.EW: Vivien seemed so at peace with everything even throughout Ben potentially moving and her seeing her living baby.RM: That was purposeful. Unlike most of the people in the house, in fact maybe the only one, she died surrounded by love. So I think that made her a little more at peace: accepting, not fighting. She sorta died at peace in some weird way. I was really excited that in the afterlife they have such great blow-dryers.EW: Also they have stylists!RM: They do. You look really good when you’re dead. What I loved about that is that I think everybody, particularly women, would like to think they looked most beautiful in the afterlife. So it made sense to me that she did that.EW: Was there ever a moment you thought about diverting from all the Harmons dying? Like maybe we should keep Vivien alive?RM: No, because that would really screw the whole story up. I loved how it began. I loved it in the middle and I loved the end. The only thing really frustrating for me, to be honest with you, is that sometimes people would write this idea that we were making it up as we went along and I wanted to say, “Really?” But I think now people are writing and saying, “Oh yeah!” I’m excited for people to see it on DVD, because now that they know how it ended, [they can] go back and see all of the little things, like people who have no reflections in mirrors. When you go back, you will see everything was set up.EW: That is interesting in the sense that The Killing had such a controversial finale because it didn’t pay off for viewers, while this did answer pretty much all questions.RM: Working on many shows, I feel like this was the [finale] I was most proud of because that was the through-line from the beginning. I feel like that first season of American Horror Story by design feels like a little Edgar Allen Poe novella. It was designed to be very contained.EW: Was Constance raising the demon child always part of your plan too?RM: Yes, because the thing about Constance was she was the biggest survivor. Very early on I pitched out that last line, “What am I going to do with you?” to the writers room, and I loved how Jessica played it with both fear and pride. It was a very weird little moment. There had been some discussion very early on, right around episode 3, about how do we kill Constance, and I was like, that’s never gonna happen. The odd thing about the ending of that is I love how we could get a redemptive Christmas scene in a horror show. And I loved that it was actually a very uplifting ending where everybody got what they wanted. That’s another interesting criticism about the show: People say, “I don’t like the Harmons.” Look, they did terrible things to each other — there’s no doubt about it. Particularly Dylan was a real antihero. But I think you ultimately cared about them at the end and you forgave their bad behavior and choices because I think in death they all had a sort of redemption and an awareness and a growth. I think it’s funny that in death with the stillborn baby… that Dylan can say “I’ve never been happier.” I think that’s such fantasy to people to think that the afterlife is the ultimate redemption and the ultimate peace and finally I will lose all my demons.EW: The new family, the Ramos’, seemed to immediately move into the house and have baby fever. Is the house projecting that on them?RM: No, I think that’s how it is for most people when they move to a new nest. But I love little things about the finale. Like, I loved finally that we have explained why people sleepwalk and go to the fire. Who’s drawing them there?EW: It seemed like at the end, the Harmons had figured out how to exist in the house without interacting with the unpleasant folks like Tate and Hayden.RM: Yes. I always thought that the Harmons would become the alpha people of that house, particularly Vivien. I thought she would be the matriarch. I personally think Violet will never speak to Tate again. I feel like he deserved pain. I think the biggest justice for him could be to not get the one thing he wanted, which is love.EW: Basically Tate’s and Hayden’s comeuppance is that they end up alone.RM: That’s exactly right. That’s what we wanted for them. Alone and tormented.EW: And I loved that Moira got what she always wanted, which was a family.RM: Yes, exactly. She progressed beyond her servitude and was seen as a true member of the family and a woman. I always thought, amongst all the characters, she was the most tragic to me. I’m glad that she got her happy ending.EW: It was almost like a curtain call at the end with all of the previous ghosts showing up. I forgot about the bug man.RM: We always wanted that act to be the Grand Guignol cavalcade. I love the idea too that some of those ghosts are benevolent and some aren’t interested in helping people. It was fun to have arguments in the writer’s room like, Who’s the nice ghost? Who’s the mean ghost? Who’s the vengeful ghost? Who would help?EW: Is the Infantata still alive?RM: He’s down there scavenging for bugs and eating possums until some other poor souls go down there.EW: I just read that American Horror Story is the highest time-shifted show of the year, which basically means the most DVR’d. Why do you think that is?RM: I think it’s two things: I think a lot of people don’t like to watch this show at night before they go to bed. And I think a lot of people like to watch it in groups. Ultimately, I’m really proud to do a show that’s too terrifying to watch when it airs.

I’m excited for people to see it on DVD, because now that they know how it ended, [they can] go back and see all of the little things, like people who have no reflections in mirrors. When you go back, you will see everything was set up.
 Whats he talking about here?

'American Horror Story' scoop: Second season will have new cast, locale (goodbye, Jessica Lange?)

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/12/22/american-horror-story-season-tw/

Attention American Horror Story fans: hope you didn’t get too attached to the Harmon mansion and most of its inhabitants. Creator Ryan Murphy told reporters today that season 2 of the hit FX drama will begin with a new locale and a (mostly) new cast.

That means fans may — or may not — get another fix from stars like Jessica Lange, Dylan McDermott, and Connie Britton when the drama returns next year. “Some of them will be coming back,” Murphy teased during a teleconference today. “I’m talking to several of them and we’re in negotiations. There will be familiar faces, but there will also be new faces on the show.”

Murphy hopes to announce the new storyline and cast in February.

Should some of the first season actors return for another round of AHS episodes, they’ll be “playing completely different characters, creatures, and monsters,” Murphy added. ”It’s a really fun idea to do an anthology show. That’s the way it was designed from the beginning. Every season, there will be a new haunting and we’ll have a new overriding theme.”

The drama’s unique mission has made it easier to attract top talent, Murphy acknowledged. He’s heard from many film stars who like the idea of not having to commit to so many seasons. “When we met with Connie, Dylan, and Jessica, they were interested because the story had a beginning, middle and an end. Connie just came off of Friday Night Lights and was not interesting in going back into the grind of a 5-year commitment. When I told her she only had to do a 1-year run, she was excited by that.”

Added Murphy, “I would have all of them back in a heartbeat to play someone completely different.”

But the mansion is definitely history, Murphy admitted. The set was already struck to move “onward and upward.” So long, original craftsman fixtures and solid oak floors!

The AHS finale on Wednesday averaged 4.4 million viewers, making it the most watched episode of the series. The show is currently tied with TNT’s Falling Skies as the No. 1 new show among adults 18-49 this year. It’s already the highest-rated first season show in FX’s history.

FX notes that AHS performed 50 percent better than Murphy’s last creation, Nip/Tuck.

Not all American Horror Story fans were in agreement over how to take the season-one finale last night, but we can probably all agree that AHS was one of the most thrilling shows of the 2011 season.

We hopped on the phone with cocreator and executive producer Ryan Murphy, who revealed his plans for season two: new haunts, a new cast and returning actors in brand-new roles…

Season Two

New Cast and New Roles: While Ryan revealed that he is talking to "a handful" of the season-one actors about returning in new roles in season two, he told reporters that next year's main cast will be all new faces—which was the plan from day one. "Some of them will be coming back. There will be familiar faces and also some new faces," Murphy teased. "The people that are coming back will be playing completely different characters, creatures, monsters, etc. [The Harmons] stories are done. People who are coming back will be playing entirely new characters." Unfortunately, he stayed completely mum on which actors might be coming back. "I would have them all back in a heartbeat. I think we'll announce the full cast and what the new storyline is going to be some time in February."

New Location: "What you saw in the finale was the end of the Harmon house. The second season of the show will be a brand-new home or building to haunt," Murphy said. "Just like this year, every season of this show will have a beginning, middle and end. [The second season] won't be in L.A. It will obviously be in America, but in a completely different locale."

New Theme: This season's theme was infidelity, and season two will also have an overlying theme running through the episodes. "The season we're planning now is very different from the California house approach," Murphy revealed. Now here comes the cool part: "There is a clue in the last three episodes where we resay what the next season will be about." Get to searching, AHS fans! And since the new season will have a new building and location, the opening credit sequence will change as well, but Ryan said he will be "hopefully" using the same artist who created season one's incredibly chilling sequence.

Sorry, Twilight Fans: Ryan is excited to explore different ghosts and horror stories, but he will not venture into Edward Cullen territory. "No seasons about vampires, but anything else is fair game."

Movie Stars: Because the shooting schedule of AHS is much like a movie commitment (three months or so), and because each season will bring new castmembers, Murphy has targeted film actors who he's wanted to work with to join the cast of season two. He reasons that since they'll only be attached to the show for one season, he can bring on people who have film careers so they won't be locked down for five seasons. "This allows for those who haven't done television to step up and say 'let's do this,'" said Murphy. "I've been getting a lot of calls from film actors who have wanted to dabble in television but never could figure out how."

Season One Postmortem:

The Finale: Murphy promised that the finale was planned since day one, and he was very satisfied that the Harmons got peace in their deaths. "I love those characters and I mourn them. I will miss them," he says. "But I think as you see in the second season some of those characters will be returning. It was always the plan. I just hope that people who loved the show will love the second season, maybe even more so based on what we've already cooked up. I thought [the finale] was a great goodbye to those characters. We were simply not interested in doing another season with those characters trapped in that house. You just have to tell the story you want to tell."

Easter Egg Hunt: One good reason to rewatch from the beginning? Murphy insists there are plenty of fun clues fans can pick up on. "I think the clues of all the deaths and everything that happened are always there right from the beginning. And there are certainly several references to Dylan and hanging and noose stuff throughout the whole season. I think that'll be fun for fans to go back and look at all those clues that we were planting right from the beginning."

Ben's Happy Ending: A lot of fans wanted Ben (Dylan McDermott) to be punished in the finale, but Ryan thinks Ben got the happy ending he deserved. "To me if he would've escaped the house with that baby and started shacking up with some other girl, I think that would have been completely out of character for the series," he said. "So I think the way that he went was interesting and justified. I like that the whole family together had peace and absolution in their death and I feel that they all grew as characters. I think that we redeemed them in a cool, interesting way."

Is it just me or is Demonspawn aging at an incredible rate of speed? Not only was he born fully healthy in like 5 months, now he's 3 years old when he kills Lupita?
well, to be fair, it did say 3 years later
:lmao:I find it funny he missed that yet remembers the babysitters name
Was it really Lupita? I just took a stab at a stereotypical spanish housekeeper's name.

"Some of them will be coming back. There will be familiar faces and also some new faces,"
Please bring back hot Moira.

Last post... Constance had 4 children right? Tate, Adelaide, Beauregard, and ....? The monster in the basement was Thaddeus Montegomery, so who was the 4th kid?

What the hell was that?

I can usually overlook a lot if I enjoy the overall concept. And I did with this show. But that episode was a mess. The mood was completely different in the finale from the rest of the season (after Ben died, anyway) and the pacing sucked. It felt like a 6 hour show chopped up and pieced back together into 70 minutes of a Hallmark Original by a chimp. Hell, even a cheesy good-ghosts-vs-bad-ghosts throwdown with the house being torched at the end would've been more satisfying.

Oh well, very disappointing end to an entertaining season. I'll give it a go next year, I guess.

My guess is that next season is a completely different story, location, cast.

EDIT: guess I should have finished reading the thread before I made this bold prediction.

It will be. See a few posts back.I was really hoping that's what they were going to do. I thought the new family was a setup for next season but quickly realized they weren't long for the house.

This show got worse once things started actually making sense. The finale was horrible. "We've got some film left over, wanna shoot one more?" Beetlejuice.

Yeah, the Beetlejuice stuff was pretty lame. That said, I liked the happy ending and thought it was a satisfying payoff for the family.

So, maybe I missed something, but Tate's victims from the HS shooting were ghosts why? They didn't die in the house.
It was Halloween, the one day the dead can freely walk amongst the living.
but in this pretend world everyone that dies becomes a ghost?
I believe so. Atleast those that can not accept their death. The ghosts in the house are trapped there. The show didn't really explain much about ghosts that die outside of the house.

I guess this is the answer, just wasn't explained that I recall. I was just curious more than anything.

Finally got through the last four episodes I hadn't had a chance to watch yet. I liked the finale and I am glad they wrapped it up like that. I was thinking that they would have to do a new "story" each season to keep it fresh. I just can't imagine how they would keep going with the Harmons. Looking forward to the next season.

For fans of the Office. I just saw a repeat that had Tate in it. He plays the the intern and nephew of Michael Scott who eventually gets spanked by Michael in front of everyone.

I share the same sentiment as most here, overall I thought the finale was a disappointment and 1 of the worst episodes of the season, or at least disappointing after Ben died. I dont agree with what Tufnel said about it getting worse once it started to make sense, I think it actually peaked with the 2-3 episodes before the finale, thats all. After just reading those interviews though, I can appreciate the finale a little bit more and see where the writers were going with it. Im still shuked with what shadyridr mentioned on the last page though, there was an article (posted in the thread IIRC) that said the finale was supposed to be 2 hours, but they cut it to 90 minutes, yet the finale we got was 70 minutes???? I didnt see that explained in any of the interviews. That could explain how disjointed the finale felt, but you'd think they wouldve mentioned what happened there. Overall loved the show though, best new one Ive seen this year. Considering the topic/plot, very surprised its FX's highest rated show ever.

Before the show even started, I expected it to be an extended miniseries/1 season show, as I didnt see how a story like this could last longer than that. Very excited theyre taking an entirely different approach for season 2. Im personally kind of hoping it takes place in the past (1800's maybe?). Only downside of this is no more Constance, but at least Jessica Lange won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress a few nights ago

American Horror Story Scoop: Ryan Murphy Confirms Returning Castmember for Season Two!

http://www.eonline.com/news/watch_with_kristin/american_horror_story_scoop_ryan_murphy/292289#ixzz1ljqQjes6

Ever since Ryan Murphy revealed that he was trying to bring back some original castmembers for American Horror Story's second season, we've been anxiously demanding waiting patiently for news on who will be popping up next year. Finally, we have something!

Murphy confirmed last night to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that a fan favorite will be returning. So who's coming back?

The one, the only...Jessica Lange!

Cohen asked the AHS and Glee creator: "You are recasting American Horror Story for next season. Will Jessica Lange make an appearance?" Surprisingly, Murphy confirmed the speculation with a simple "yes."

It's not the most surprising announcement seeing as Lange had been "thinking about" returning to AHS for some time now. But still, the Golden Globe and SAG Award winner will be making an appearance in season two, and that's all that matters to us right now. The only question remaining is: will she reprise her role Constance Langdon in season two or, as Murphy said previously, return as a different character?

AHS fans should also squash any hope that Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott or Taissa Farmiga would return, because Murphy also stated: "I'm in negotiations with four of the people who were on last year's show, and none of them were the Harmons." So Evan Peters could return. But more importantly…Zachary Quinto?!

Murphy continued dropping AHS scoop by revealing that season two will take place "somewhere on the East Coast and it's going to be a horror institution." Mental hospital? Perhaps.

Jessica Lange will return to 'American Horror Story' -- EXCLUSIVE

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/03/01/jessica-lange-will-return-to-american-horror-story-exclusive/

If you liked Jessica Lange in season 1 of American Horror Story, then you’re going to love what creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have in store for season 2: EW has learned exclusively that the two-time Oscar winner will return to the FX drama this fall.

The actress, who won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award for her work as the hateful, bigoted (and extremely delicious) Constance Langdon, has signed a new deal to stay with the horror franchise. But she won’t reprise her memorable role in the new season, which resumes production in late July for a mid-October return to FX. She’ll play someone entirely new, promises Murphy.

“We have designed the second season of American Horror Story completely around her character,” Murphy told EW exclusively. “Last year Jessica came in with Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott. This will really be the Jessica Lange show so I’m very excited about it. We are designing this amazing new opposite of the Constance character for her. She and I have spoken about different things. She has a lot of ideas, and has a lot of input into her character. She told me some things she has always wanted to play as an actress. She’s a great collaborator and a great friend.”

“I really sweated this negotiation,” continues Murphy, “so I’m glad she is firmly on board.”

Lange is not the only actor from season 1 who will return for a second year. Murphy said he signed three more, but won’t reveal their identities until Friday when he and the AHS cast members participate in the annual PaleyFest in Beverly Hills. (EW’s own Tim Stack will moderate.) Obviously, Britton and Walsh, a.k.a. the Harmons, won’t return because they perished at the end of season 1. That means potential returnees could be Denis O’Hare (Larry Harvey), Evan Peters (Tate Langdon), and Frances Conroy (Moira O’Hara).

AHS season 2 will take place on the East Coast and will involve a horror institution. Regrettably, that’s all we can get from Murphy.

Not sure I really want to see The Jessica Lange show. I hope they don't give in too much to her ideas and opinions. Loved Season 1 so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Obviously, Britton and Walsh, a.k.a. the Harmons, won’t return because they perished at the end of season 1.
This may be the dumbest comment Ive ever read. Why is it obvious they wont return cuz they died? Especially since Lange is playing a different character and two of the other three people they mentioned were also ghosts.

Zachary Quinto To Join FX’s ‘American Horror Story’ As Male Co-Lead In Season 2

http://www.deadline.com/2012/03/zachary-quinto-american-horror-story-season-2-fx/

EXCLUSIVE: Another key piece of the upcoming second season of FX’s hit drama series American Horror Story has fallen into place. Zachary Quinto, who did a scene-stealing four-episode arc on the first season of the Ryan Murphy/Brad Falchuk drama as the Harmon house’s doomed former co-owner Chad Warwick, will be back as a series regular in Season 2, joining Jessica Lange. Like Lange, he will play a brand new character next season, which is set at an East Coast institution. What’s more, I have learned that Quinto will play one of two male leads and the nemesis to Lange’s character, which will be at the center of the Season 2 storyline. The part is sure to draw parallels to Quinto’s breakout role as uber-villain Syler on Heroes.

While Lange had been expected to return — she confirmed ongoing negotiations at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, where she won for her performance on the show, Quinto’s return had been kept under wraps until now. Quinto and Murphy are friends; that’s how Quinto’s original stint on the show came about. After the critical praise Quinto received for his arc, he was open to coming back. “I had an amazing time and I only did four episodes of the season, so it was just a little bit of an appetiser for me; I would love to work more,” he said in an online interview last month. An anthology series like AHS is perfectly suited for Quinto, who wants to keep a hand in television but, busy as an actor and producer on the feature side, can’t make the 5-6-year commitment required on a regular series.

In addition to Lange and Quinto, three other actors from Season 1 of AHS will return next season. Murphy is expected to announce their names at the show’s panel tonight, which will open this year’s PaleyFest. Additionally, AHS is casting several other roles, including the male co-lead opposite Quinto. Quinto, repped by CAA and Untitled, won’t be attending tonight’s event because he is in production on Paramount’s Star Trek sequel, in which he reprises his role as Spock. He recently did the awards circuit with the indie Margin Call, which he starred in and produced through his production company, Before the Door. The film won the Best First Feature and the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards, received a best original screenplay Oscar nomination and was named Best First Film by the New York Film Critics.

Its also dumb because since all reports, the creator Murphy has said season 2 will be entirely different and if actors crossover, it wont be as the same character. That said, Im glad Lange and Quinto will be returning

Agree on the non-returners point. But as someone also mentioned, if it's going to be all JL then I'm thinking it's downhill from here. She jsut seemed to get more and more over the top as her character's importance & popularity increased. And the ZQ-flamer character getting more time also? That was the stupidest storyline of the show. Think I'm bailing.

That was the stupidest storyline of the show. Think I'm bailing.
Dont think you understood what I was referring to. I was talking about how it has already been stated season 2 will be an entirely different setting and story, so of course the Harmons wont be back, but also that Im glad the 2 actors are. None of the characters will return, the show creators had just discussed/offered some of the actors from season 1 to be in season 2. As of now, Lange and Quinto are the only 2 actors returning, but they clearly wont be playing Constance or gay whiner. Quinto's character was actually one of the more annoying characters for me from season 1, Im just glad he's back because I thought he was good in Margin Call and Star Trek.

Obviously, Britton and Walsh, a.k.a. the Harmons, won't return because they perished at the end of season 1.
This may be the dumbest comment Ive ever read. Why is it obvious they wont return cuz they died? Especially since Lange is playing a different character and two of the other three people they mentioned were also ghosts.
Its also dumb because since all reports, the creator Murphy has said season 2 will be entirely different and if actors crossover, it wont be as the same character. That said, Im glad Lange and Quinto will be returning

'American Horror Story' Season 2: Jessica Lange runs an institution for the criminally insane

http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/04/american-horror-story-season-2-jessica-lange-runs-an-institution-for-the-criminally-insane.html

"American Horror Story" Season 2 is still quite a ways away, but creator Ryan Murphy continues to tantalize fans with details about what is coming. We already knew the show was going to be set on the East Coast, at a horror institution of some kind.

Now Murphy tells a panel at the TV Academy in North Hollywood (via the Hollywood Reporter) that Season 2 is "set on the East Coast at an institution for the criminally insane that is run by Jessica [Lange]."

Oooh. Who is immediately picturing Nurse Ratched? Only crazier, if that's possible.

Murphy also says, "It's a completely different world and has nothing to do with Season 1; there's not a mention of Season 1. The second season is set in a completely different time period."

Oooh. That's fun too. Do you have a preference on the era?

Finally, Murphy says that in addition to the Season 1 actors we know are returning (Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe), there could be more Season 1 faces popping up who are not announced yet. He specifically said there were other people "on this stage" who will be in Season 2 and the ones on stage who have not been announced as returning were Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Denis O'Hare and Alexandra Breckenridge.

Which one(s) out of those four do you hope to see the most? We really like Denis O'Hare, we think he'd be our first choice.

"American Horror Story" returns in fall 2012 to FX.
