Amtrak derailment (1 Viewer)

PORT RICHMOND (WPVI) -- Rescue crews have been called to an Amtrak train derailment in the Port RIchmond section of Philadelphia.

Action News is being told 8 to 10 cars derailed. Approximately 200 people were on board when the train derailed around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer is calling this a mass casualty incident.

The NTSB says it is gathering information on the derailment.

ETA: Happened around 9:30 EDT

Scary. I used to have clients in Washington DC and have taken that train about 50 times.

Yeah I've taken that train a few times from DC to NYC, I always consider the train about the safest mode of travel. Terrible.

This was no accident, was it....
Not sure but why do you think it wasn't?
Just the times in which we live, sadly. This being deliberate was the first thing that popped into my mind. As Doc said, train travel is typically safe.
nothing is safe from accidents. trains derail more than planes crash.
True but that looked like a lot of damage for trains that are going between 50-65 mph.

The time of day tells me no. If you want to mess with transportation systems, you do it during the day.
I did a little stint with a guy who derailed a train. He did not seem any smarter at night than the day.

1:22 a.m.

Officials say all seven cars of an Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia came off the tracks.

The train was carrying 243 people from Washington, D.C., to New York City on Tuesday night when it derailed in the Port Richmond neighborhood.

Fire Department spokesman Clifford Gilliam says the train had six passenger cars and the engine.

Mayor Michael Nutter says at least five people were killed and at least 65 people were transported to hospitals, including six in critical condition.

Nutter says not everyone who was on the train has been accounted for.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf says the state will help Philadelphia in "whatever way we can.

damn shame. Ive taken the train between NYC and DC 100s of times. This looks like the regional and not the Acela(which is the high speed train) which is surprising if speed is a factor.

Death toll up to 6 now - very sad.

I've taken the NE corridor train as well many times on business -still will but obviously a bit more nervously now.

my brother in laws father drives that route for Amtrak. His train went on the same tracks earlier that day

Reading this while riding on a train into work now. T&Ps to everyone and their families that were involved and hoping as many recover as possible.

hopefully the report of the domestic terror cells is not related

From what I have read they are investigating the speed of the train so it appears they think it's the driver who could be at fault. It's all just speculation at this point, though.

Did the driver (conductor?) survive? I'm guessing there's going to be some intense toxicology testing.

A Philadelphia commuter train was hit by a projectile about 20 minutes before an Amtrak train derailed a few miles up the track.

A spokeswoman for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority says there's no indication that the incident is related to the derailment.

SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams says they don't know what the projectile was. It broke the engineer's window around 9:25 p.m. Tuesday near SEPTA's North Philadelphia station. No injuries were reported.

Williams says the Trenton-bound commuter train was stopped and the incident was being investigated when the Amtrak derailment happened about 3½ miles away.

Williams says Amtrak dispatches SEPTA's Trenton line and was aware of the incident.

Six people were killed and dozens more were injured in Tuesday night's Amtrak derailment.

Train was going 100 mph in a 50 mph turn.
damn. so driver error? that's the final or latest word?

like others, we're on that route every couple months.

is there a car that's worse than others in general on trash crashes? the first car?
For the last 3 train crashes it looks like the front is the bad car. I usually try to sit directly behind the bar car. I may move back further in the future.

wait... there's a bar car? :excited: or is that what we're calling the cafe car?

Make that 107 mph. Driver isn't talking until he gets a lawyer.

Looking less and less likely that Mr. Glass was behind this.

Gonna take awhile to figure out where everyone is. There's the chance that those who were on the manifesto never got on the train, and they are trying to find those who walked away, who may still be trapped... I'd be surprised it the death toll stays at 7. :(

is there any feasible explanation for a train going 100+ mph if it's not equipment failure and not intentional? Is it even possible for a train to get to that speed with the engineer asleep?

I thought the MTA train a year or so ago had driver error (asleep or spaced out?) with going too fast around a curve.

IIRC, there was a crash in... Spain?... a number of years ago too fast around a curve where the driver was texting?

I was surprised the engine was sitting upright and that the conductor even survived.

Former congressman Patrick Murphy was on the train and he called in to radio this morning. He was still shaken up talking about it, said he came out of it lucky with just a cut and some bruises. But was aiding 2 people that were seriously hurt just a few seats away from him. Scary story he told.

Yeah there was that mta train... Iirc it was severe sleep apnea that resulted in the engineer falling asleep.. But nowhere near 100mph; just too fast for that section of track. It takes time to get up to 100 though and engineers have to push a button every so often to prove they are still awake or the train shuts down. That makes me question if this was an accident, equipment failure, or intentional. That should cover the options I think.
