Even if you take the 80 yarder out, he's still averaging 4 ypc. Feed him the rock.

When the stats come out, I'd be interested in seeing Ellington's snap count.

As big of a performance he had, I can also easily see Arians keeping Mendenhall as the starter and working in Ellington situationally.

 
Wtf. Ellington has probably the biggest game in arians coaching career and wont even give him the victory carries. Lol

Ellington owners can view that as a win. Valuable players don't see the field when the game is in hand. Maybe the Cards staff beginning to see what they have.

Andre Ellington rushed 15 times for 154 yards with a touchdown and caught two passes for eight yards in Sunday's 27-13 Week 8 win over the Falcons.
All it took was a Rashard Mendenhall toe injury for the Cardinals to finally realize who their feature back should be. Ellington was predictably explosive, perfectly bouncing a second-quarter run to the edge and outrunning the entire Falcons defense for an 80-yard touchdown. He also pounded tough runs inside and pushed the pile. The Cardinals did use Stepfan Taylor (14/38/0) as their clock-killer, but Ellington has made his stand and his arrow is pointing straight up. He's going to get 10-14 touches weekly even if Mendy is healthy following the Week 9 bye.

Not sure if anyone caught this snoozer but I had the pleasure ( :bag: ) of watching this one. Ellington looked good, however, the ATL D was playing touch football. It was incredible how poorly they tackle.

Heck they made Stepfan Taylor look like a pro bowler out there.

I kind of wonder if Mendenhall actually has an injury or he was gracefully benched. He was pretty awful. Atlanta was without multiple LB starters, but I have to think Ellington gets at least 15 touches every week going forward. Big-play ability that Mendenhall, who will get occasional series and some GL work, just doesn't have.

 
I have the same question. With the above comments regarding Taylor and Mendenhall, is this a sell high moment for Ellington?

I'll probably continue start him over Spiller (if healthy) because I'm that desperate.

Week 16 @ Seattle doesn't bode well for Arizona though.

yep. and as many in this thread have pointed out, arians is a super solid coach, and is very unlikely to mismanage his players, therefore mendenhall gives the team a better chance at winning.

Well..then they are morons if they keep starting Mendenhall.....for jimmy sakes......Ellington is a game breaker. He earned the job today.

Given his outspokenness on prior occasions and that he's still relatively young I'm not sure that Mendenhall would take such a scenario easily.

I wouldn't call Mendenhall young as he'll be 27 before next season. He's carried the ball more than 1,000 times in his career. He's probably very close to the average career span on running backs that weren't that particularly elusive to begin with.

In his 2009 when he averaged a career-high 4.6 per carry, Mendenhall ranked in the middle of the league in forced missed tackle rate.

I'd say his injuries have made him even less elusive by now. He's the back I would want to limit the workload of if I were Arians.

I'd imagine ellington ranks among the top 5 elusive backs in 2013. But since it's a "small sample size" according to some skeptics on here, it's probably not important to trust your own judgement on a guy. He was picked in the sixth round for crying out loud, he can't be any good. the odds are against him.

"We'll look and evaluate how everything goes and how he responds to the treatment," Arians said. "He'll play when he's 100 percent healthy."

I find it hard to believe he'll ever be 100 percent again. Bruce has to play the rookies -- Taylor had 13 carries also -- if he wants to get this offense going and keep his job.

And comments from Palmer about ellington:

That allowed Palmer to throw for 172 yards on an efficient 13-for-18 passing day.

"It makes [the defense] worry about it," Palmer said. "Defensively, you've got to worry about 38 (Ellington) in the game. You've got to worry about screen. You've got to worry about him running inside, him running outside. Toss plays. Then the play-action."

Almost all, if not all of Taylor's carries entirely, were after they pulled Ellington late when the game was over.

Taylor is no threat to Ellington by any means, and after his game today, Mendenhall shouldnt be either.

And it opens things up because they need to shadow him whereas they wouldn't worry about a screen if mendys in the backfield or worry about him getting outside like he did today.

Arians has expressed worry about Ellington’s ability to be a workhorse back because of his smaller stature, and was non-committal about the possibility of increasing Ellington’s touches – or a permanent move up the depth chart -- moving forward.

“I’ve got to go back and see how many snaps he really played, but it was about probably the same: probably 35-40,” Arians said. “He scared me one time when he went down. We tried to keep him in space as much as possible.”

Ellington said he wouldn’t be disappointed in moving to a lesser role when Mendenhall returns.

“Not at all,” Ellington said. “Rashard, he’s our bell cow. He’s our leader in the room. This guy earned that respect. I’m waiting for him to get healthy and get out there and make plays.”

If nothing else, Arians said 35-40 snaps, which to split hairs, is a bit more than the 30-35 he originally said. But Arian does seem to have concerns about him running between the tackles.

Andre Ellington was fantastic. Don’t know how many plays he got, but he still only had 17 touches, and, sorry folks, I don’t expect that to grow tremendously. But that 80-yard run was a thing of beauty. Stepfan Taylor looked good too. Take away his clock-grinding-while-the-Falcons-had-10-in-the-box runs late, and even Taylor had 33 yards on eight yards. Now, the Falcons are not the Seahawks or Niners on defense, but 201 yards rushing is 201 yards rushing.

– Arians would not commit to Ellington as stud starter. He just said he’d wait for Rashard Mendenhall to get 100 percent healthy – which who knows, may be a while, especially now – and evaluate it then. I’m pretty sure he knows what kind of weapon he has in Ellington.

Absolutely. Not many RBs even get 15-20 touches a game.

Only problem is that the 15-20 is likely on the high end, as it will be contingent on how many plays the offense gets in general - Mendenhall will still get his.
