...After trading former All-Pro Josh Gordon to the New England Patriots, the Browns are counting on Callaway to make big plays as their starting “X receiver.
“Obviously, the catch to tie the game is a confidence booster for any young player. I think that he was always coming on. We were not trying to push him too fast, not give him too much too fast. Now, he has to take it all. It’s time.”
Callaway started in place of Gordon in the Superdome, played 50 of 62 snaps (82 percent) and caught three passes on four targets for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Jackson and wide receiver Jarvis Landry said they thought Taylor had overthrown Callaway until the University of Florida product found another gear. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Callaway reached 21.48 mph while running his route. Only Kansas City Chiefs two-time Pro Bowl receiver Tyreek Hill has been faster this season, hitting 21.95 and 21.78 mph on separate plays.
“For [Callaway] to go and track that ball down like he did, wow,” said Jackson, who admitted to watching the catch on film about five times. “He can run.
...Landry explained he believes the play boosted the confidence of Callaway, his teammates and offensive coordinator Todd Haley.
″[Callaway’s speed] can open up the offense for sure,” Taylor said. “He’s an incredible talent, and the opportunity is here for him to grow and for us to grow as a team, and we’re going to need his playmaking ability to definitely step up for us to be successful as an offense.”
Callaway said he realizes “I’ve got to step up,” and Landry is convinced he’s ready.
“Absolutely. He ain’t got no choice,” Landry said. “But he’s definitely a guy that we’re going to count on, we’re going to lean on. We know he can make plays, and Sunday was a prime example of that. And given more opportunities, I’m sure he’ll make more plays.”
