Any Bob Mould fans in here? (1 Viewer)

I netflixed his Circle of Friends DVD and it was kick ###. He did a mix of Husker Du, Sugar and solo stuff. I saw on his website that he's doing a bunch of shows in March. I'm planning to see him when he's in NYC. Anyone else seen him recently or planning to go to any of his upcoming shows?

Workbook might be one of the best cd's ever. Was a big Husker Du fan too. Sugar was so-so, some good songs and some bad ones.

Thanks for the heads up on his doing some shows. Hopefully he comes near here. Was his DVD just concert footage or more?

It was mainly concert footage. There were a couple short interviews, but nothing too interesting other than the concert.

Saw him solo acoustic at the Paradise in Boston years ago.

It was the loudest damn show I have ever been too. It was kick - ###

I saw Husker Du a bunch of times as a kid. Ears rang for days after every gig. That Gibson Flying V he played was thunderous.

Seen him about 5 or 6 times and I think he's back in Chicago this march. I feel compelled to see him as I can't picture his concert voice lasting any longer. His last album Body of Work is surprisingly strong - most solo acts like this you expect to put out clunkers in their later years, but he seems to be the exception and I'm looking forward to the new album. "Circles" and "Best Thing" would be my recommendations off last album.

I had meant to pick up Circle of Friends DVD as he was pimping it this summer at a local festival - thanks for the reminder and I'm glad to hear it's good.

Saw him on the "Black Sheets of Rain" tour. Ear-bleedingly loud.
Never saw Huskers :tinfoilhat:Saw Mould solo at the same time as you. I had the worst headcold imaginable and tried to make it through the show, but just couldn't. As you said, it was ear-bleeding loud. Now couple that with everything just echoing in your head. It was beyond painful and I had to bail. Saw Sugar before Copper Blue was released. Great show, but not knowing the music was not helpful. I've heard a recording of that show since and it's amazing. Some of it was released as extra tracks on the singles from Copper Blue.Planning on seeing him next time through Chicago. It's been too long since I have.

coincidentally, i just finished up listening to one of his albums. agreed that workbook is an alltime great.

i saw bob mould in pittsburgh maybe two years ago. the turnout was so pathetic that he commented aloud about why he bothered to drive up from wherever he was to do the gig. there must have been about 20 of us there. his music is so good but that evening was pretty sad.

Started listening to Husker Du in the late 80s. Saw his solo show twice and Sugar once as well. Awesome live. Met him at one of the shows, and he's very different when he's off the stage. Quiet and kind of introverted. He's quite a character, though. He wrote for wrestling shows, and is obsessed with the whole thing. Link.

He DJs periodically at the 9.30. I've never been to one of the club nights when he DJs, but I've heard it's pretty good. I'm interested to hear his next solo album. I liked Body of Song.

Christ, where was the show? The show I referenced above was at Graffiti (does that place still exist?) and there was a good turnout.

He's DC based now.Recent performance on the Henry Rollins Show was real good. Played If I Can't Change Your Mind on the actual broadcast show and there's an extra clip here on the website http://ifc.com/series?aId=18032

Comcast also had something available in their On Demand Music section that was 3 or 4 songs live from the 9:30 Club in DC. I think it was only available until 12.27 though. If it's still there its well worth checking out.

Actually saw Grant Hart open for Buffalo Tom a couple of years ago. He threw in a couple of Huskers tunes in his opening set and then came out with BT during their encore and they did an all Huskers mini-set together.

good stuff.

it was at the Rex in the South Side. not well advertised and kind of a cold night if i recall. he did mention driving from DC now that the other poster jogged my memory.Sadly, the Graffitti doesn't exist anymore.

I've seen Bob like 10-15 times. Get there early, he almost always strolls around the venue before the show. Last time I saw him, I hung out and had a beer with him and talked music for about 15 minutes. Awesome guy.

He's awesome. I saw him in November at John & Peter's in New Hope, PA, which holds 100 people at most. Good helping of Husker songs, a few nuggets from Workbook and Sugar, and a few more recent things. He hasn't lost much, songwriting-wise. He has a new album coming out in February and I'm sure it'll be worth hearing.

I was too young to see Husker Du when they were around, but I saw Sugar in '94 at the Trocadero in Philly, and Bob solo a few times around then. Also saw a solo show in '02 or so, two shows on the Body of Song tour, and the New Hope thing. His live shows are always worth it.

District Line drops in a couple weeks.

Listening to an advance copy now and it's really good. Guitars first and foremost, and Brendan Canty (Fugazi) on the drums. His solo stuff has been kind of spotty IMO but If you like Mould from Husker / late 80s solo / Sugar then this album should be right down your alley.

Thanks for the heads up. The last two Husker Du albums (Candy Apple Grey and Warehouse) and the first two Mould solo albums (Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain) are some of my favorites from that time. I'll check this one out.

First time I saw Husker Du was over 20 years ago. The last time I saw Mould solo was about 7 or 8 years ago when he announced on stage that it was his last tour and we would never see him live again. Typical drama-queen stuff from my favorite openly-gay punk rocker.

Old thread here, but this is what I got when I searched for Bob Mould. Just got tickets to see him in DC at the 9:30 Club in March. It's the 25th anniversary of "Workbook," so I think he's going to play the whole album, plus some other stuff.

I went last year when he was touring for the 20th anniversary of "Copper Blue" and it was such a great show. A friend of a friend is on tour as his bassist now, so we got to hang out a little after the show. Not too long, though, as he was doing one of his DJ gigs later the same night.

Saw the same show in Chicago and it was awesome. Plan on hitting the Workbook one too. Also saw him at Riotfest in September, which was only about 35 minutes, but he just blasted through the set.

Narducy (I'm assuming) is just living a charmed life right now. Bassin' for Bob Mould Band, Superchunk.

Yep. He also has a new band in the works with Britt Daniel from Spoon, though I haven't heard any of their songs yet.

As for Bob, it seems like the publication of his autobiography was what fueled his re-emergence. Maybe that and stuff like Dave Grohl bringing him on stage during Foo Fighters concerts and paying tribute. Whatever the reason, it's really cool to see him get his due.

I like Copper Blue most, I think, followed closely by Workbook. Cut my teeth on Workbook.

PM me your email address so we can meet up, if you're interested. I'll be there and I know some other FBGs will be too.

I tried to get tix for City Winery and Old Town here in Chicago but I was travelling the day they went on sale. Were you able to get tickets?

:kicksrock:

Had no idea that they had gone on sale already. damn

PM sent, fatguy.

The Chicago shows sold out in something like 30 minutes. DC still isn't sold out - ordered tickets today.

No Statues?

Favorite Husker song in my limited knowledge of them.
Workbook was always going to form the bulk of the setlist, as this is an anniversary show. It's kind of hard to think of how most Du songs would be done with guitar, bass, and cello (which is this lineup).

The_Man, just let fatguy know if you've changed your mind about a mini-cornhole. We're nothing excited, but a few of us will be there.

Been listening to Zen Arcade and New Day Rising plus Copper Blue heavily for the last few weeks. I can't listen to 59 Times the Pain (which freakily just came on the iPod) enough times.

There was an old thread that was talking about the similarities between Mould and Frank Black. Successful and innovative/influential first band, internal conflict then a good solo/second band career. Someone succinctly summed it up something like:

Frank Black: more stage names, fatter

Mould: more umlauts, gayer

That is a GREAT set list. Would love to see "The Slim" or "Slick" in there, but that's nitpicking. I would be bummed not to hear "Black Sheets of Rain" though.
