My son and I are taking the BSA High Adventure canoe trip next summer and I am looking for any and all advice.  To start with, I need gear advice.  Our crew is planning a number of hiking and camping excursions over the coming months to acclimate us to life in the outback as we will be touring the Canadian side of the lakes.

What types, style, brand of backpack, boots, sleeping bags should we be looking at?  I understand it will be Very buggy with mosquitoes aplenty, so what type of clothing and accessories to combat?  As a rather large individual what are the chances I will have a heart attack on the trail?

I appreciate any input and if you want to laugh at my expense based on my ignorance or anythign else, have at it, I am free game.

I have done the Boundary Waters trip before (just with some buddies), so be prepared to be amazed.

Beautiful place. We used an outfitter, so they provided the sleeping bags, tents, etc, so I can't help you there. Just bring comfortable shoes because you'll be portaging your canoe between lakes. They are pretty decent trails, so I don't know that you will need a heavy hiking boot. If I remember, I wore something like these. Worked fine for me. Take two pair of shoes.

good for you for taking your son on this trip that is cool and way to go dad take that to the bank brohan

Thanks Chief.  From what we've been told, when you do the Canadian side the portaging is a tougher go as the trails are not maintained or manicured in any way, they just let the wild life grow and fall where it may and there is what is affectionately called moose muck.  It's the place where shoes go to die.

Haven't been but we had a crew go up from the Canada side last year. They loved it. I think you might want to check more closely about the footwear,. I think there were some very particular requirements in that regard.
