Anybody else think the Falcons are frauds? (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
Yes, they are undefeated at home, but no team will be saying "Oh no... we have to go to the Georgia Dome!!!"

They may get past the 4/5 seed in their first game, but I don't see them winning two playoff games.

Ryan is 0-3 in the postseason with 3 TDs and 4 INTs. He's got to show it to me.

Personally I don't think there is a team in the NFC where you quake in your boots to travel to. All have had stinkers and rough spots, what team that projects to have a home game looks like a near lock? I can see the NFC East eventually winner, GB, and San Fran losing at home to the possible wild card teams.

Nobody looks forward to playing in Seattle. And Green Bay is a close second when they are firing on all cylinders.
So are you saying that if you are a fan of the 6 seed and the West division is in play in week 17, you're cheering for SF to win the 3 seed (assuming Pack take control of 2 seed) over Seattle?

Seems like the last thing everyone expects to happen is what actually happens. Maybe this is the year where the number 1 seed goes the whole way. They've looked pretty good lately. Clearly the defense is going to make or break them in the playoffs. I'm more of a believer than I was a month ago.

That said there's not a place I'd rather have my Packers play a game in the playoffs!

I'll come back to this in the morning. I'm too drunk to comprehend that right now.

Physical teams alsways get more benefit of the doubt the efficient team. I am expecting to see a similiar thread for the Texans after they earn home field advantage. Seattle has a rookie Qb and more questionable loses than the Falcons, but somehow they srike more fear???

Just about everyone, from what I've seen.
Vegas has them at 6:1 to win it all, despite the HFA. San Fran is at 7:2 and Green Bay is also at 6:1, despite the fact that either squad would have to travel to Atlanta, and one of them is guaranteed to miss out on the bye. So I'd say Vegas thinks the Falcons are reasonably fraudish.

Funny you should mention Houston. Vegas has them at 5:1, but they only have the third best odds in the AFC, behind Denver (4:1) and New England (9:2), again despite the fact that either team would be forced to travel to Reliant, and one of those teams will have to play on wildcard weekend.

It was a really convoluted way of asking whether you'd rather play San Fran in San Fran, or Seattle in Seattle.

Show me the record & stats of Peyton Manning's first 3 playoff games. This team is very different from the 2010 team because this defense actually can shut down elite QB's thanks to Mike Nolan (Peyton, Eli, and Drew Brees highest INT games against Falcons, they're a combined 1TD 10INT against Falcons at Home). This team also has Julio, I think they will go on a run this year.

They had Julio last year when their offense got shut out against the Giants.

This boards fascination with julio is ridiculous. Hes really good but hes no calvin or fitzgerald or green. Those are the only wrs who can take over a playoff game at will.

Huh. What did atlanta do against NYG this year?

Kinda like the Packers? The reason they don't get the best odds is because of the teams they play and the results when they do. The only team they have beat that is tips in the nfl is the Broncos by 6 at home when Manning was still warming up. Same thing with the Texans getting blown out in the 2 biggest games home against the Pack and on the Road in New England. It's not who is more physical it's who has actually won games and their form right now. Yes they beat the Giants but they are just as likely to lose at home to the Raiders as win on the road at the patriots. That being said out of where I would want to go play on the road Atlanta sounds like a nice stop on the way to the Super Bowl.

Relevant as this is the Playoffs which is completely different than the regular season. Also with the Giants they could go out this week and win 48-10 because they are so up and down.

IMO, they are good enough to have the record they have versus the competition they played (poorish sched).

There may be people in Hotlanta over-hyping them, but I don't see it going on elsewhere. Frauds? Why ask?

I'm just puzzled at the comment "this team is very different from the 2010 team"...Why are we ignoring the 2011 Falcons which had Julio and got humiliated against the Giants?

As a Falcon fan on this board, allow me to play devils advocate...

1) Matt Ryan is playing QB as well as anyone in the NFL.. This could not be said in any of the previous trips the Falcons made to the playoffs. He's been efficient but prolific in 2012 and has taken his game up a significant level past where it had been in years past.

2) Falcon defense has played well against elite QB's. While many would point to the off-season acquisition of Asante Samuel as the reason for this, in actuality, Samuel has served to offset the loss of Brent Grimes. What's really been the catalyst for this has been Thomas DeCoud and Will Moore who quietly have become one of the better safety tandems in the NFL. Opponents TD's and completion rates are down.

3) This is a better team that the 13-3 version from 2010. If any #1 seed was a fraud, it was that team. Ryan's YPA was brutally bad (6.5) in large part because the Falcons simply didn't have anyone opposite Roddy White who the passing game could rely on (Michael Jenkins!).

I certainly think the Falcons have flaws (Michael Turner is done and Quizz Rodgers is best at the 10 touch/game level, and they do seem to lack that killer instinct we've seen from previous iterations of this type of team - 2009 Saints and 2010 Packers). But I feel like the piling on on the Falcons has become the popular thing to do. To be fair, their past playoff ineptitude has earned that scorn, but it seems to be reaching mob think proportions.

Well, the Texans are not playing good enough to even be called frauds...so there is that.

I find it funny your comparing Ryan to Manning who is known for being not so great in the playoffs and not being able to put the Colts over the top.Manning had Home ('99), Away ('00 + '02)Manning Playoffs 3 of 5 years and first wins came in his 6th year (Home field in 1st year)Game 1 - 19/42 - 227 - 0 TD - 0 INTGame 2 - 17/32 - 194 - 1 TD - 0 INTGame 3 - 14/31 - 137 - 0 TD - 2 INTRyan Playoffs 4 of 5 years and 0 wins yet - he is in his 5th year and 4th playoffsRyan has had home-field throughout the playoffs 2 times nowGame 1 - 26/40 - 199 - 2 TD - 2 INTGame 2 - 20/29 - 186 - 1 TD - 2 INTGame 3 - 24/41 - 199 - 0 TD - 0 INTThis doesn't change that Manning still took over 8 years to get a super bowl... So in that case your backing up what people are saying in that the Falcons will go down.

Why in the world is the 2011 game more relevant than the 2012 game? Because it backs up your point? lol

I'm not the one who brought up 2010, which is even more meaningless."lol"

The only reason people "know" Peyton was not so great in the playoffs is because people are stupid and love their narratives, regardless of the facts. His 88.5 career postseason passer rating is higher than Brady's 87.8. Peyton Manning's playoff offenses have averaged 4.5 points more than the points allowed average of the defenses he has faced. Tom Brady's have averaged 4.7. Peyton Manning's offenses have scored 1.9 fewer points in the playoffs than in the regular season. Tom Brady's have scored 1.2 fewer. I think the bigger problem with comparing Ryan to Manning is that Peyton Manning is the greatest QB in history and Matt Ryan is not, not some silly made-up storyline about how Peyton was a playoff choke artist.

Define "frauds". Imo they're about the 5th or 6th best team that has ran slightly well and had a soft schedule to have the best record in the league. The 5th or 6th best team with HFA is certainly capable of winning the SB. Single elimination playoff makes luck/variance a huge factor always.

All sorts of great QBs lost in playoffs first. If Ryan steps up things could change.

They seem like the old Chiefs under Marty. Those Chiefs could have a 12-4 or 13-3 record but they never won much in the playoffs.

Tomlinson is retired and Turner looks so close (this makes me feel so old) and...I want a championship for the bruiser. He could carry the team on his back if he was younger or if he had like a sudden burst of stellar play that we have seen older players do; it seems so unlikely.

I believe Ryan does some variations of telegraphing who is getting the ball. Many young QBs are guilty of this, but it doesn't fly in the playoffs.

The old adage about running and stopping the run will haunt them unless Turner visits the fountain of youth

The only thing I can say about the Falcons is that they can pile up points fairly quickly. I don't think there's a team in the NFC that matches up particularly well against them. Packers are the most likely I suppose.

I'd love to see the Falcons and Patriots duke it out. Besides that, I've got Falcons over Ravens, Texans, and Bengals. Broncos and Patriots (no surprise) seem like the biggest threats from the AFC. I am personally pulling for the Broncos.
