Anyone been to San Juan Puerto Rico? (1 Viewer)

Fair & Balanced
Have a chance to go to San Juan for 4 days in December. A buddy of mine does work for a few major hotel chains and got 2 rooms comped with meals at the San Juan Resort & Casino. I just have to pay for the flight and they are pretty reasonable right now. For a couple of days he will be traveling around the island so I will be own my own, I know at the casino I will be content but any advice for beaches, sight seeing around San Juan? It is pretty safe to hit the local towns by yourself?

The El San Juan is a beautiful old building on the Isla Verde Beach. If you head East from the hotel, there's another beach called Loiza that's a lot less touristy. Loiza has some nice beachfront bars and restaurants. According to my friends who live in Puerto Rico, Loiza can get pretty hairy at night though.

I recently stayed in Luquillo, which is about 45 minutes east of San Juan. If you're looking for a cool (but possibly stressful) daytrip, you can take the ferry out to Culebra and visit Flamenco Beach, which is consistently ranked one of the top 5 beaches in the world by tripadvisor, fodors, nat geo, etc.

We were only there for about 10 hours during the day on a cruise stop, so I can't speak to what things go on (good and bad) after dark. We did check out Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Pretty cool stuff and the view is pretty awesome.

The only thing that was a bit sketchy was that we were doing some shopping and sight seeing in Old San Juan and went down a side street we obviously shouldn't have because we ended up at the gates to what was probably an embassy or something (never did find out what is was). There were armed guards there within 10 feet of us. They didn't bother us. Just said to turn around and go back the other way.

This should definitely be one of his trips. Head to Luquillo beach and hang with the locals while drinking pina coladas and then head across the highway and do some light hiking in the rain forest.

Bumping this thread. Headed there next month for a bach party. And restaurant and nightlife/debauchery suggestions?

The one time I went there, I got housed in blackjack. I played $10 a hand with $300. I lasted maybe 35 hands. Never seen anything like it. It made me think that the game wasn't above board. This was in the freaking Marriott. In short, I wouldn't gamble there even though you legally can.

As for debauchery, I'm pretty sure there is a building in the Isla Verde area that says "#### Fighting" in big letters on the side of it. Maybe check that out.

duck fighting? :shuked:

When I was there a few years ago, I did one of those taste testing tours where they take you around to a few restaurants in old San Juan. Had a great time and got some really good food.

Chicken, but I guess the word is censored because we're not all adults.

My gambling experience was pretty much the opposite. Me and my son sat down and played - I staked him $100 to start and between th 2 of us won maybe $700 in about 20 minutes and then we got up and left 'cause my wife and younger sons were done checking out whatever it was they were exploring.

There's a few cool places to see in La Perla. It's a real happening spot at night. You should check that out.
