That said, the issues seem to go beyond Kitna. Last week vs. Detroit with about 9 mins or so left, they were up against the Boys. Yet instead of running the ball with Jones (as he was having success running the ball in the game) and running clock, they're still were chucking the ball.
Needless to say, the passes were incomplete and clocked stopped. Do the Lions win the game if they ran, maybe...maybe not. Just thought it is/was horrific play calling. Martz needs to go.
This is total baloney.
Here's the play-by-play. And here's a quick overview of the 4th quarter:Lions take over with 14:12 left, drive 41 yards to Cowboys 17, where Hansen misses a 35-yd FG. It would have put them up by 2 scores.Cowboys take over with 10:45 left, drive 65 yards to Lions 10 before Witten fumbles at the 1.
Lions take over with 5:47 left, on own 1, drive 36 yards and run off 3:32 before they punt. Jones ran 4 times in this drive, for 4, -4, 3, and -2 yards. The failure to gain yards on the ground forced them into repeated 3rd and longs. They converted 2 by PASSING, but not the 3rd. With 2:26 left, they could have run the ball just to take extra time off the clock on that last 3rd down. But if you've watched Detroit play defense, I'm sure can appreciate the desire to aggressively go for the 1st down there to avoid giving the ball back to Dallas.
So, to sum up, the Lions only had the ball in a potential running out the clock scenario on that last drive, and even then you've got to be a really good running team to run out nearly 6 minutes of clock, so it's a stretch to call it that. Moreover, the failure to run out those 6 minutes was caused by the failure to gain yards on running plays, not "chucking the ball."
