anyone here into fishing? (1 Viewer)

Still trying to find the best bait to bring in the big Northern Pike and Large Mouth Bass in my lake. Guy on the lake was catching stuff left and right with http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_SPM7525871008P?ci_src=184425893&ci_sku=SPM7525871008&sid=IDx20130125xMPFITx010 but I had little to no luck with that same bait a day later. I guess that's the challenge but pretty frustrating to watch this guy catch ten fish in an hour and then I got nothing in two+ hours with the same bait. Could be operator error I suppose.

I did catch a few nice Bass with some crawlers though, not a total loss. The lake has a lot of Blue Gill and I can catch those off my dock pretty much anytime I want, but I want to catch some Pike.

I did some surf fishing off of Fort Myers Beach yesterday.....didn't have much luck. I only caught two catfish, but did drag up this really cool starfish. It was one of these: http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/6114400.jpg

I haven't seen them before.

Anyway, I was using a double hook drop rig with a 3 ounce sinker. The top hook was baited with squid and the bottom hook was baited with frozen finger mullet.

any suggestions on how to NOT catch the catfish and have better luck with actual edible fish? I guess if I was serious, I would have cut up the catfish and use that, huh?
You can also try Gulp! artificial jerk baits.

Work them parallel to the beach in the ditch between the beach and the sand bars,

Soon the snook will be using it as feeding highway.

A friend of mine recommended the Megabass Ito Vision 110 as a good bass lure, but he told me he catches a lot of chain pickrel on them in central MA. I bought a Megabass when I was in FL and fished off my dock. I was targeting bass, but I actually caught a chain pickrel on them... and I didn't even know there were pickrel in the lake I was fishing. The Ito Vision 110 is an excellent lure for bass fishing but it seems to attract pickrel very well too. They are extremely expensive for a bass lure, but if you are really wanting to catch them... I would give it a shot. Chain Pickrel are in the pike family and look just like pike but smaller.

The lure I had was a jerk bait that only dove around 3-4 foot deep, but it was a floater and always rose to the top. The color I used was mainly chartruese with a black tail in a matte finish, but I think the shiny finish is good too. You can order Megabass lures at tacklewarehouse.com. Here is an example of an Ito Vision 100 floater:

http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Megabass_Ito_Vision_110_Jerkbait/descpage-MB110.html#multiview

I like the 'Gill' color... but I thnk any color of these would be good. They always say in fishing to 'match the hatch' meaning try to match the color of the bait fish in the area. If you can find or net some baitfish in the shallows and see what color they are... try and find a color that matches really well. Or go for a color with a lot of shine to attract bass. The one I have linked is labeled a slow floater that dives to 4-6 foot depth range. I used to catch pickrel on rattle traps in colors that had verticle stripes on them (like the Gill color in the link). Or maybe look for something with a rainbow trout color. Fish see trout as an excellent meal as opposed to the average 'shiner'. I always liked perch color baits too. I like the GG Trout OB and the Perch color in the link.

Thanks Jutz.

I found some good spinnerbait videos (cue laugh track) last night that I bookmarked so I can watch before my next trip back up to the lake. July seems to be the best month for Bass but not as good for Pike, which I've learned is in the fall months.

Went out fishing this weekend for some trout. Ended up catching a 17-inch and 14-inch trout. Had maybe 6 good bites in addition to the ones I caught, but wasn't able to set the hook. This is a problem I seem to have a lot. I use a Powerbait sink/slider setup. Any suggestions?

The best spinnerbait instruction I've ever seen was on a show called Major League Lessons. There is a fishing tournament called Major League Fishing and it is set up different from the traditional style fishing tournament in that every fish counts, there is an official on every anglers boat, and as each fish is caught the weight is entered by an official and input into an ipad so every angler knows exacly where they are at on the leaderboard at all times. It's a really cool tournament style if you are into that type of thing.

Well, for the 2 tournaments that were held this year (1 on lake Chautauqua in NY, 1 on Lake Istokpoga in FL) they filmed a show called Major League Lessons in which they picked about 5 anglers that fished in the tournament, took a camera on the boat with them, and they went over in great detail the techniques they used in the tournament. They told all the 'secrets' like what rod / reel combo they used. What lures they used. How they rigged the lures. Well, on the Major League Lessons episode the filmed for the Lake Istokpoga tournament they went out on the boat with Gary Klein and went over the type of spinnerbait set ups he used. He showed all the different types of spinnerbaits he used, how he rigged them, and what type of conditions he looked at to make a decision for each rig.

I looked on youtube for the clip but couldn't find it. The only thing I could find online is the page linked below that shows what was covered on that particular episode:

http://www.majorleaguefishing.com/news_details.aspx?id=2042

As you can see, the episode says it covers "Legendary angler Gary Klein breaking down the spinnerbait". Unfortunately, like I mentioned earlier, I couldn't find this clip on youtube. But the page does show when Major League Fishing airs on TV and you might be able to catch it there. I really don't have a lot of knowledge on the spinnerbait. The only thing I know is when it is overcast, it is best to go with chartruse color. But other then that there are a lot of tips on when to use willow, indiana, or colorado blades and what combination to use them.

The Major League Lessons episodes I've seen for both tournaments were some of the most informative bass fishing shows I've ever seen. I've never seen a show where they go into so much detail about how they fish and what they use. You can learn alot about many other techniques in addition to the spinnerbait. I believe they air on the Outdoor Channel. If you set up your DVR to record them you will get repeats and have to delete a bunch of episodes to get to the 'Lessons' episodes, but if you can dig through them I will guarantee it will be worth it. Pro anglers are realizing these days it doesn't pay to keep secrets. The trend now a days is to reveal the secrets in great detail so more people can enjoy fishing to help promote the sport... and I for one am very thankful for that.

The only advice I've heard related to hookups for fishing involves the type of hooks used. I don't know if it would apply to trout fishing, but I heard it in regards to bass fishing, and it had to do with the type of hook used. The most typical weeless set up used for bass fishing, that I have used over the past several years, is an EWG (extra wide gap) hook. This type of hook enables the bait to stay on the hook, and the hook point to dig back into the plastic at the tip making it weedless. An EWG hook looks like this:

http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Gamakatsu_SuperLine_Offset_EWG_Hooks/descpage-GSOWG.html

The advice I saw, and a new style hook that a lot of bass anglers are using is called a punch stop hook, or a flippin' hook. Below is an example:

http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Lazer_Trokar_Flippin_Hook/descpage-ECTFH.html

The difference is very subtle, but the flippin' hook could potentially increase the hook up ratio. The EWG hook is excellend in that it does an good job of keeping your bait weedless. The flippin' hook attempts to keep the same weedless advantages while giving the bait a better chance at getting the hook up. It's difficult to describe in words how the 2 set ups are different... but I've noticed the new style flippin' hook seems to be the trend most of the pros are moving towards for an improved hook up ratio. In the same Major League Lessons episode I linked for DD above there is a section called: B.A.S.S Toyota Angler Of The Year Brent Chapman navigating and fishing creeks and canals. In that section of the episode Brent Chapman coveres the stop gap / flippin' style rig I am talking about. He uses a senko style worm bait, but the set up can be used on any type of plastic. I think Bobby Layne uses the same type of set up in that particular episode as well.

My BIL is currently down in Bonita Springs and is catching several small hammerheads off the beach. Pretty crazy, are they in on the beach at this time of year?

You guys are supposed to show the teeth on those things! Ive never caught one, but Im hoping to this year at the beach. Supposed to be able to find them near the rock jetties if you can hook them.

Last year at the beach I was near the rocks catching reds and flounder when saw a guy with a spatula scraping chunks of barnacles off of the rocks and putting them into huge ziplock baggies. He filled about 4 of them and stuck 'em in a backpack. I asked him what he was going to do with it and he said "Sheepshead bait". He said they ferocious eaters, but were very hard to hook. It was my last day there, but he told me where/when to go so Im looking foward to giving it a shot.

Currently on a party boat out of Fort Myers Beach trying to get a grouper. I bought 10 pinfish as my secret weapon (boat supplies squid and cut up fish bait) but the damn pinfish seem to be dead already in my aerated bucket! Bastuds.

Heading to a new spot in Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada, in a few weeks. One of the best fisheries in the world. I've only fished the western side (Northwest Angle) which includes fishing in both MN and Canada. Excited for a new look. Mostly hit walleyes and northern pike but we may try some Muskie fishing too as it's one of the best areas.
Went to Lake of the Woods a couple weeks ago. We killed it with the sauger and walleye, the two days we were able to get onto the lake. The other days, we did OK with the bass and northern when the wind kept us on the Rainey River.

The bass were pretty good size.

Went fishing for the first time in about 2 months today in Bradenton. Between the three of us we boated 8 Redfish, 3 slot sized and 5 overslot. I caught my personal best 33 incher, a 29 incher, and this 26.5 inch fish. If you look close, you can see a leader hanging out of its mouth - the ******* broke me off 15 minutes prior and got greedy and came back for more, and that time he didn't get away. He's about to hit the hot fryer oil and become Redfish and chips.

 Nice! This year at LOW we went to another new location and stayed on a small island. Nine guys as usual, two big fish fries plus we all brought back our limit. No really big fish out of the group but I had the largest walleye and my personal best at 26 3/8" on the final evening which won the group bet. Also a nice 35" Norklie.

Boy, I think I need glasses. Mistook the "h" for a "t" and well, let's just say readin "crappie" and "largemouth" in post #1 didn't help.

Need some help with a gift. Long time client is a fly fisherman and we need to get him a gift. Any thoughts?

Going Walleye fishing on the Saginaw Bay next weekend.

Hoping to catch some Northern Pike on my lake, really haven't cracked that code yet.

Ive caught a few of those, theyre all over the place down here, especially by bridges and piers. Theyre a sight but Goliath Groupers arent the most fun fish to catch...its like reeling up a Volkswagen bug. If I was that guy Id be looking for Tarpon on that yak. Theyll drag you miles if you let em.

Got two Northern Pike, pretty awesome until you get them in the boat and are trying to get to shore. I was beating the thing with an oar while driving the boat, really wish someone would have shot video of that. 26" in my lake is at the higher end, and pike are actually good eating I found.

You had them laying on the bottom of the boat? heh

So ready to start fishing this year! Heading to Hamlin Lake (near Ludington, MI) in a couple of weeks. Always do well with largemouth, rock bass, and the occasional northern there.

No I had him in a net pinned under an oar and he went buck wild (fliw I am by no means an expert fisherman, I'm a novice with some seasoning at this point). ####, I gutted him two hours after taking him out of the lake and his heart was still pumping away. ####### prehistoric monster he was.I mostly fish largemouth and walleye myself, just had no luck with pike. Bass better in the summer on my lake, but I don't get up here as much as I'd like.

Good luck in Ludington, tell Harry I said hello!

Can anyone recommend a good rod/reel combo (reasonably priced) for surf fishing? Heading down to the gulf in a couple weeks.

Fished the flats around Anna Maria Island today...the Sheepshead bite was on fire the first couple hours, then the Black Drums went wild. Ended the day with nine keeper Sheeps 13-19 inches, and six keeper Drum 21-24 inches. All caught under residential docks on pieces of fresh shrimp. Also caught maybe 20 short sheeps, a few small Mangrove Snapper, and a few undersized Drum.

Nice. How much did you have to pay that homeless guy to model the fish for ya?
