anyone here into fishing? (2 Viewers)

Any of you familiar with the Shreveport, LA area for bass fishing.  That 3rd place finish the other weekend earned me a spot in the National Championship which will be held there next March.  Being from Iowa I don't have any experience fishing water like that.

Its been Red Snapper season the last two weekends here on the FL East Coast.  This is the first viable season we've had in about 7 years. Had a good weekend last weekend but yesterday got a really good one.  32", 16# Snapper. Most boats were running out to 100' + water at 20-25 miles but we got him in 80' of water just 9 miles off.

Nice fish!

I’ve never seen fish cooked like that. Was it cleaned at all or cooked as is?

Scaled, gutted, gilled.  Then stuff the body cavity with herbs. Slit body both sides, olive oil and S&P on skin.  Lay on bed of lemon slices and cover with more lemon slices.

Used my winnings from my last tourney and upgraded my kayak.  Got a NuCanoe Frontier 12 now.  Last night I added a pedal drive to it and I'm excited to get it back on the water.  Planning on fishing an online tourney this Saturday, it's an MLF style tourney.

Being in Iowa I don't get to fish open water all year so I'll be working on improving my kayak all winter and getting ready for the National Championship in March.  Plan to make this thing a fishing machine.

Going to the Northwest Angle tomorrow  to fish Lake of the Woods in Canada for crappies and walleyes. Nine guys and three boats.

High temps will be in the low to mid 30’s with one day at 40. Snowing multiple days. Hoping the fishing is great.

The kayak bass fishing community was shocked yesterday morning from the news of the death of one of the more popular members.  Today is the first day of one of the season championships on Toledo Bend and many of those fishing it have been there all week pre-fishing.  Wednesday night one of the members did not make it back to the ramp and was later found that she died out on the lake.  Not sure what happened yet as details have not been released.  Not every knew her personally but almost everyone knew who she was.  She was one of the few women that fished in almost every big tourney and did well.

I qualified for the tourney but was not able to make it there.  I know there are a lot of heavy hearts out on the water this morning.  I wish them all well and that they stay safe.

Went on our annual fall surf-fishing trip to Portsmouth Island, NC last week. Four days of primitive beach camping on an uninhabited barrier island. ? ? ?

Started nice and ended nice, but had a couple of really crappy (rainy/windy) days in between which completely shut down the bite. One day there were sustained 30+ mph winds. Really sucks when you have nowhere to go to escape it. No complaints though and already wishing I was back on the island. Overall, we had a decent trip. We got 10 red drum (8 slot keepers - 2 overslot) and tons of other fish (blues, black drum, flounder, sharks, rays, sea mullet, spot, perch). I got the lone bull of the trip at 45".

Man, I haven't fished since July when I last took my kayak out. Gotta get back into it soon...with Snook, Reds, and now Grouper closed it's time to target some Sheepehead. Gonna try to make it out next week.

Got a couple small ones on the docks last weekend.  Botched offshore trip so we dicked around in the river and fed the Pelicans blues and pins. Man, I love me some Sheephead. Black Drum, too.  Maybe I'll get out this weekend.

Booked a charter out of Homosassa for early March.  Can't wait gonna get me some Reds and hopefully a Gator trout or two.

My 2nd favorite freshwater fish to eat behind walleye

Nice catch   👍
Yea I love Speck probably have 20 lbs in the freezer.  Got em in a local lake must have been 30 boats in the same deep spot.  Went with a friend on his boat we have an old saying down here it's better to have a friend with a boat than to have a boat.

No doubt lol

Just read through the last few pages of the thread.  Man, I miss fishing.  I grew up in Oregon, and spent every summer on the coast.  I was commercial fishing (trolling) for salmon starting when I was 8 years old, and we sport fished Coho and Kings and "bottom fish" (cod, sea bass, etc) in the off season.  In the spring and fall my dad would drop me off either at the local trout lake with my raft or down at the boat launch at the river where I'd fish and mess around for hours.  As I got older we fished Steelhead and Kings in one of the 6 rivers within an hour drive of our cabin.  And when I was 13 I went to a river somewhere in the Kenai peninsula in Alaska for an 11 day trip with my dad and grandpa and a few others, and we caught something like 9 different species of fish in those 11 days and never saw a sign of human existence other than an occasional airplane.  In college a couple of buddies and I would regularly buy a 12-pack and head up the McKenzie River hoping to catch something, we rarely did but great times.

I've only fished a handful of times since then, living here in the Bay Area.  It isn't as easy to do without a boat, and other priorities have come up.  But the plan is to move back to Oregon in a few years, and my dad's aluminum drift boat, that has been gathering dust in the garage at the cabin, will be getting a lot more use.....

Fishing on the Sanibel Causeway and got stuck by a catfish barb for the first time ever. Doesn't feel very pleasant.

Hey guys.  Maybe you can help with a dilemma my wife and I have been wrestling with for a few weeks.  I'm going to be 50 this year, as is one of my closest friends, who I went to college with.  A third close friend is also a pal from college.  We have stayed friends all these years.  One guy's family has a house in Montauk and we used to drive from upstate New York to Montauk, just to fish for cod for one day!.  When younger, we spent many a weekend in the surf of Montauk chasing strippers.  Since then, we do 2 off shore trips out of Montauk every year, one shark tourney and one 2 day tuna trip.  My third pal coordinated a trip to Panama for his 50th last year.  It was fun, but a little TOO much fishing for me.  Up at the crack of dawn and fishing all day, literally for 5 straight days.  Caught a ton, but for my 50th and the other guy's, we're looking to do something different.

I have always dreamed of staying in a cabin in the woods and having a guide take me out fishing in fast rivers in the mountains somewhere.  I was very surprised when I started looking around and while there are tons of guided trips all over the country, they all seem to be fly fishing.  I've been surfcasting with a spinning reel forever and have never picked up a fly reel.  All our offshore fishing is big game.   I have no desire to try and learn to fly fish now, I can barely fish with a spinning reel and I've been doing it for 35 years!

So, I'm looking for a fishing experience in the mountains somewhere where a guide can take us out, fish all day on spinning tackle and then come back to a cabin or whatever and drink beer by a fire before getting up to do again the next few days.  And Alaska or probably even the pacific northwest is probably too expensive.  I want to go into the mountains, kind of like an episode of River Monsters.  Any ideas?

Any tips on NOT catching saltwater catfish?

Should I just cut one up and use it for bait? Do they eat their own kind?

@Wingnut
Part of the deal if you're inshore fishing in FL. They get worse around dusk and they are more likely to hit a stagnant bait.  The gafftop sailcats are actually good eating but super slimy. Never used them for bait...pinfish, on the other hand, are great bait.

Complete trash fish, I don't mess with em at all. I'd rather get skunked than catch cats.

Had a pretty good day today.  I had a bass on the line that would have probably been the biggest I have ever caught.  My shiner was right up against some saw grass near the top this monster bass hit at the top chased it around the saw grass all top water.  Man my heart was just a beating I thought I might need ems.  Nothing better than a top water strike except maybe catchin em.

Anyone been out bass fishing lately?  I had my big tourney down in Shreveport two weeks ago and it was extremely tough.  Managed to catch a few nice ones but that's about it.  Being back here in Iowa I'm stuck with crappy weather again.  It was gorgeous last weekend and I got out once and was able to catch two but doesn't look like I'll be getting out again soon.  I might try going Saturday morning but it's going to be 32 degrees when I go with a possibility of warming up into the 40s.

I fished about 3 weeks ago here in KC. My wife's company moved into this business complex, and they have these two beautiful ponds on there that rarely get fished. Me and my son went out and caught 11 bass - mostly in the 1.5 - 2# range. And the water here is still pretty cold.

Looking forward to hitting that pond up here in a couple of weeks as the water temps rise.

Love fishing ponds like that.  I really want to get out tomorrow but 30's and windy doesn't look too appealing.  Water temps were in the mid 50s last weekend but I'm sure they have dropped into the 40s again.

I worked a little on the boat over the weekend. This may be my last year with a boat for a few years so i plan on doing a few longer trips.

Nice Drums.  One of my favorite fish.
VA recently ordered an emergency moratorium on Striped Bass, so this was our first time keeping Black Drum. I had heard the bigger ones can get wormy, but these were all pretty good. Only one fish (out of the 8 we kept) had worms.

I vacuum sealed 4 gallon ziplock bags of fillets last night when I got home. Couldnt resist cooking one up while I was at it. Sauteed it in a little butter with S&P and a squeeze of lime. Doesn't get much fresher. Less than 24 hours earlier it was swimming in the ocean. So good.

Every year in the spring my kids and I get all the tackle boxes out, lure boxes, and fishing poles out to do an inventory to see what we need. Also clean out the boxes, throw out out line, etc. This is to basically get us excited for our June fishing vacation to Minnesota we take every year.

That was this past weekend. This is by far the latest we have ever done this. Due to crappy weather, kids sports, and just life in general.

It was so nice just to sit outside on a 75 degree sunny day with a cold one and the kids getting excited about fishing season again. It was also nice to see we didn't really need to buy anything at Bass Pro this year. But we'll go and buy something anyway.

Headed to Michigan for a nice week of fishing and family fun. Hamlin Lake is usually pretty solid for bass, rock bass, & northerns. There’s walleye, bluegill, etc., but it’s not what I usually catch. Free fishing weekend coming up for those without a license.

You eat bass???
Smallmouth bass are delicious.   Never eaten largemouth though.

ETA:  I should say I've only eaten smallmouth from the Boundary Waters (clean water).  Not sure how these will be out of the river.

When you hooked that carp did you think you had a huge smallie? 😃
I didn't catch it, the guy holding it did.  Yep, he thought he had a big smallie. :)   I did catch a softshell turtle earlier that day so we were wondering about that or a catfish.  Quite a fight.

carp are some of the best fightin fish you can get on a fly rod its just flat fun as all getout brohans i mean they are harder to catch than a trout and like a freight train when you get em i support fishing for carp take that to the carp bank brocarpos

They are well thought of as game fish in other parts of the world.

Wow.  Great memories of that lake as a kid.  We had a cabin there.  All the way at the North of the lake almost into the National forest.  Tons of Pike, Bass, Bluegill, and my favorite were the beer bottle Perch.  Tight lines!

Yeah, they're good up to about 15-20 pounds then they can get a bit wormy.  We get big schools of them offshore here in the fall and they are all 50+ pounds.

Originally from Michigan myself. My wife’s family and others rent cabins on the south end every spring/summer. Great fishing! North side has some of the best pike and bass for sure.

Im sure you stopped into House of Flavors as a kid too, no?

I haven't heard that name in about 30 years.  Great summer memories. Mackinaw Island Fudge was my favorite flavor. I only ever spent summers there but my family goes back a couple generations in a little town east of Ludington called Custer.

Who doesn’t like Mackinac Island Fudge?!

I’ll post a pic if I catch anything decent. I’m concentrating on soft baits this season. Drop shot, jigs, etc. Wish me luck!
